How to Improve Your Search Engine Ranking on Google and a little warning to all about page content that I learned the hard way...

As many of you are probably already aware, Google ranks a page according to the number and quality of links leading to that page. For example, if your page has 100 quality links leading to it, it will rank higher than another page that has only 20 links pointing at it. Quality links come from pages that are themselves "important" (Google's own terminology)

The most important rule for scoring higher on Google, however, is to make your site useful. Simply put, the best way to get your site to score higher on Google is to put something useful there -- have your site bring some benefit to someone.

Remember that the value of the web is the interconnection of it all (that beginning-less and endless chain of consciousness.) Each connection has a pointer and a page that is being pointed to. A link that points to another site is only half the equation. If you point to other sites, it doesn't really help you score higher. However, if your site has other sites pointing to you, this is called a "back link." Back links will help your site score higher.

When your site brings true benefit to the people who are surfing the web, people will link to your site. In a phrase: Be helpful to someone. It is that simple. It is the single most important thing you can do to improve your score on Google.

Google determines the benefit of a site based on the number of "back links." Google ranks the benefit of your site by the pages that are pointing to your site. If you put something useful on your site, people will definitely link to your site (especially if you ask them). And if you find this thread useful, please link to my site. ;)

Furthermore, Google ranks your web pages, not just by the number of links pointing to your web pages, but Google takes into consideration the scores of the sites which are linking to your web pages. So your goal, as a site designer who wants to increase your Google score, is to persuade other high ranking (i.e. helpful) web sites to link to your pages. And what's the best way to do that? Put something helpful or beneficial there.

Scamming Googlebots with simple link exchange tricks doesn't always work. Googlebots have methods of detecting links that are intended to trick Google. Remember, Google was designed by Stanford Graduate students. So your energies are better spent simply publishing useful information than attempting to fake out their band of super Googlebots.

Navigation on a web site should be made in text -- not all images. This is why they call it "hypertext". It's not called hyper-gif, hyper-image or hyper-Flash. It's hyper-text. The information in the hypertext links is important. Google ranks a page based on the words and information in the back links. Try to use text instead of images to display important names, content, or links. The Google crawler doesn't recognize text contained in images. If you must use images for textual content, consider using the "ALT" attribute to include a few words of descriptive text. An image which links to a page -- like banner advertisements and image navigation -- score lower in Google. Why? Because information within an image is unavailable to the Googlebots.

In the case of Honey Bear Playhomes I use both a vertical flying bee menu over dozens or individual PNG images and at the bottom of ALL my pages I use a TEXT link menu. By doing this I have the best of both worlds and humor the Google webcrawlers. I enjoy the visual aesthetics of my honeycomb and bee menu but need the text menu as it benefits more than the images when the webcrawlers scan my site.

Adding content

As to the real reason of this thread and in a way a warning to others... I had 4 months ago thought that I wanted to clean up my index page and remove some of the clutter. In doing so I removed my text content and placed it in a text box (with a side scroll bar) at the bottom of my index page and many of my other pages. I did this to have a less filled page as well as allow the ability for webcrawlers to still have text content to crawl. A month went by and while reviewing my analytics I noticed that keywords were not showing up as they were before. I used Google to search for all my content search words and phrases and to my shock and amazement could not find my site. I was on the first pages of nearly all my keywords and phrases before and after I was not anywhere to be found. A great deal disheartened at loosing my high Google results I deleted the text boxes and replaced them with the original text content.

It took months to regain my rankings and even now I am happily moving up and continue to move up on the REALLY important ones. All in all to have your site appear on the first 5 pages of search results is the sweet spot as most surfers loose interest beyond that but to be on the first page of the majority is truly a happy sight indeed... Being on the first page of Google is great if you have something which everyone is looking for but in my case I am a luxury item and sadly a recession is the worst time to be offering a luxury item. All I can do is continue to do as I have and hopefully maintain my grip on the top searches and God willing move up on all the rest. When the economy returns then I will be a very happy camper indeed.

What I would like to demonstrate is how useful rich content is on search engine results. Below you will see the searches I did today for keywords and phrases relating to my line of work and where my Honey Bear Playhomes website ranks (In the USA). Notice the combinations of words and how they rank in comparison to how many other websites there are with those very words or phrases contained within them (Competition is fierce LOL). By reviewing the 2nd through 5th pages of results I can add those key words to my pages more frequently then I do in hopes that those as well appear on the first page of search results. I have done this throughout this last few months and as you can see have accomplished my goal which has paid off greatly. In a perfect world I would be on the first pages of all my keyword or phrases. While the 5th page is not the 1st what you should realize is that most phrases with “Playhouse(s)” in it were before my text box disaster on the 9th page or beyond of the searches. I knew from the beginning that “Playhouse(s)” was going to be a hard one to acquire so I initially emphasized my efforts on “Playhome(s)” and with the built up Google respect I acquired I am able to move up further and faster with the other.

I am with a FREE website built with YOLA ranking higher than the VAST majority of websites in my field built by professionals and with thousands or tens of thousands of dollars spent on their creation and upkeep/updates. I can only imagine what they are thinking... LOL To be ranked higher than hundreds of millions of sites is too cool.

What I share right now is not a get to the top quick scheme or a magical cure to make Google notice you. It is simply hard work and long hours to reach the place that we all want to be. Everything that I did to get there I have either read in or listed in the forums and if you spend time looking you will find. In this thread there are but a few to think about...

These are only a few keywords/phrases of many but not bad considering that only 4 months ago I was hardly showing after my text box disaster... “Playhouse(s)” continues to move up the list and I am eternally happy as that is the cherry word to have. Moving four full pages in a few months is something that I continue to smile at. When the economy returns and I am on the first page of all searches (I wish) I will most likely have a heart attack. LOL... I just wish people would have that disposable income once more and consumer confidence would rise enough to allow for some of those higher end purchases. I think this is still 6 months away so I continue to wait patiently and prepare my site more. Maybe the time it takes to get my other key words from the 5th to the 1st pages will be of benefit and when they do the consumers will be buying once more. God I hope ;)

If you read my index page I have a total of 359 words. You don't need to write a book but have a good combination of words that when Googled can be combined together to cover mostly all those phrases searched.

Sorry not to be available much lately but I am in the process of designing a 26’L x 10’W x 16’H Pirates play ship to be built in June or July. What fun I will have building that one... I cannot wait...

I hope everybody is enjoying themselves and as always “Happy site building”
Ed

I would like to know where this one disappeared to because I have not seem this number in months... Glad I had the smarts to take a screen shot as it would have been a difficult one to swallow. LOL... 5th on the first page out of 1,880,000,000 websites was freaking awesome... ;)

I would love it if others would share their own positive results here and let us see by keywords and phrases how they and their sites are doing... Simply look through your site as I did and Google those words in your content. Understand that results are in most part country generated and the results a person in Germany sees are not always those that others would see in their country. As your website is local to you share those results.

Who is next???

Yikes!!! I just pared down the copy today on 1 of my pages.

Sounds like I'd better go filler-up again.

Thanks!
