China has blocked all our hosted sites, whether they are on subdomains and custom domains. We do not know exactly how they have done this, but our best guess is that they have used the IP address of our hosted sites. www.yola.com is on a different IP address to that of our hosted sites, so users are able to access the site builder and build their sites but they are not able to view their published sites on the internet. However, anyone outside of China can see the sites. If you would like to test this, try clicking on any of the featured sites on our homepage. You should get the same error you do when you try to go to your own site.

While IP blocking is the most logical explanation, we don't know if keywords are also being used. Some Chinese users have tried to get past the problem by downloading their sites and hosting them elsewhere. So far no one has given us feedback on whether this has been successful or not.

A number of similar services that are based on user generated content have at various times been either blocked completely (Wordpress) or filtered (YouTube). These bans are not always permanent - they are sometimes lifted with no more explanation than they are imposed. So it may be that at some time China will cease blocking our sites.

While we are very sympathetic to our Chinese users as well as people from around the world who would like their websites to display in China, we are at a loss to know what to do. I have not been able to establish that the Chinese government has any sort of appeal process in place when they decide to block a website or I would most certainly have used it. If you have any suggestions on how we might investigate further we would be most happy to hear them.

Hello,

I believe this is the reason why I am unable to display and view my website in China. I can access the site builder and build my site, but I am unable to view the published sites on the internet. Can you suggestion what I can do so that I can make my website available to viewers (and myself) in China?

Is it possible to downloading my site and hosting it elsewhere? If so, how may I go about doing this?

Hi Chak Man Lei

The most important step you can take is to make sure that you have a custom domain for your site.  Can you post the URL of your site so I can take a look?  This will also allow me to test whether it is blocked in China.

It is not possible to download Yola sites to host elsewhere, but first let's investigate whether there is something else we can do before discussing your options.

Hello,

Thank you for offering to help.

My URL is: www.leichakman.info

I am unable to display the website here in Beijing. But the website is accessible and viewable if I log into a VPN.

Also, it seems that my site is 100% blocked: https://en.greatfire.org/search/all/leichakman.info

Your help in resolving this would be very much appreciated.

Hi Chak Man,

Thanks for sharing the URL with us. I checked out your site here: http://www.blockedinchina.net to see if your site was blocked. Apparently, your site is fine.

Can you please let us know if you're still unable to access your site?

Hello Sanja,

It seems that my website www.leichakman.info is unstable. Sometimes I can view it and display it here in Beijing, but another time the website goes blank with a message on the browser screen reading “This webpage is not available”. Even after several refreshes and attempts at clearing out the browser cache the website still could not be displayed. Do you know why this is happening?

I don’t know how reliable http://www.blockedinchina.net is, because, as you know, www.google.com is blocked here in China. Yet, blockedinchina.net gives it all the “ok” when I tested “www.google.com”. When I try to go to www.google.com without a VPN a minute ago, and google is still confirmed to be down here in China.

To test out whether China is blocking a site, this website seems to reflect closer to reality: https://en.greatfire.org/
