I have bought a domain name (australian one) with a provider and want to link it to my Yola site. I will buy DNS hosting now with the same providers as they are quite good. What I dont understand is linking it to Yola??

I understand putting the Yola ip settings in, which points the bought domain to yola, though how does it know from that WHICH yola site to point to... mine is http://raybanwayfarers.yolasite.com
(nothing done to it yet), but how will it know from the IP you provide in the tutorial to point to my specific page, and not just the whole of Yola?

Sorry if I seem a bit slow... maybe its just too late at night to be reading into it all!

Thanks for any help and sorry if it's just a re-ask of a simple question.

Hi Will,

If you host your domain for free with Yola (which we highly recommend as it makes it easier to manage and update your site) then you will need to point your domain to Yola.

However, if you choose to host your site elsewhere, then you will not point your domain to Yola, rather you will download your site and upload it to your host.

Please let us know how you would like to proceed and I will post the relevant instructions.

Oh yes I want the website hosted with Yola for sure, though I am wanting to know how I point the domain name to my specific site on Yola. Do I still need DNS with my domain to point the domain to my yola-hosted page? Or is DNS service not needed?

Thanks

Hi Will,

You will need DNS management from your domain name registrar. Then you will need to work through the following steps:

1. Log in to your chosen domain registrar (eg. GoDaddy.com, Register.com).
2. Go to the DNS Management page.
3. Set up an A Record.
4. The IP address of your record must point to: "208.75.208.172"

If you would like your domain to work correctly with the "www" prefix you need to make sure that your DNS settings are configured correctly to support the "www" prefix. For this you need to set up two A-records; one with the hostname "@" and one with the hostname "www". Both should point to our IP address: 208.75.208.172. If you require assistance with this, please contact your domain registrar.

Once you have configured your DNS settings, follow these steps:

1. Click the yellow "Publish My Site" button in Yola.
2. Click on "Use my Domain" at the bottom of the screen.
3. Click on "I have done this" and fill in your domain name.
4. Follow the prompts to publish your site.

If your site is already published, click the drop down arrow next to the "Update my Site" button, and then select "Publishing Settings" and you will see an option to add a domain you already own.

I can't explain all the technical reasons for how this works, but this will ensure that your domain name ends up pointing to your Yola site.

Please let us know if you run into any difficulty with this process, or if you have further questions.
