I changed my favicon image, why isn't the new one showing?

I changed the favicon image for my website, deleting the old one and uploading a new one with the same name. I have published my website since then. The preview in the settings menu shows the new image (and the dimensions are correct, as is the file type) but when I check my website using Google Chrome as a search engine it's the old image that shows, even though it no longer exists. Why is this?
Thanks.

Hi Polly
You will have to wait until google crawls your site again to pick up this new favicon, its not instantaneous and could take any time between a few hours to a few days..
