I am trying to add my Alexa verification ID to my site. When I have done this and tried to verify it on Alexa it comes up with this following message:- Your home page is redirecting (code 302) to an URL on another domain.
Please either remove this redirect or claim the site that is being redirected to instead. I want to know how to remove this redirect. Thank you L

Hello Louise,

Do you have a yolasite sub-domain redirecting to a custom domain that you have purchased?

If so then you set up the Alexa on your custom domain rather than your yolasite domain.

Sorry but I don't know how your answer helps either one of us. We just need to know how to remove our home page redirecting the code 32 to another domain.

Hi Judy,

Are you referring to a domain registered with Yola? We're happy to investigate this for you further but I was unable to find an account for the email address associated with this forum. Can you please reply with the website domain you are referring to?

No. I googled my question and came across your site. Do you know how to remove the redirect, in general?

Hello this is Louise again,

I had a website with Homestead the domain name being www.wpe-investigations.com. I cancelled my account with Homestead, but kept the domain name and built another site with yola with the new domain I purchased from Yola being www.wpeinvestigations.com, which is what I want to keep. It seems that google verification and Alexa don't recognise wpeinvestigations, only wpe-investigations. Forgive me for my ignorance, but I don't know which domain name is redirected to which site? Can you tell me how to remove wpe-investigations.com and if it is removed will this affect my google ranking at all?

Hope you can understand what I am talking about? It's probably very simple, but i don't want to be making any mistakes!!!

Thank you for your time

Hello Louise and Judy
wpeinvestigations.com is redirecting to wpe-investigations.com. ie: wpe-investigations.com is your primary domain and wpeinvestigations.com is your secondary domain.

The alexa tag and the google site verification tags are on wpe-investigations.com.

Message from google Analyics: Your site http://www.wpeinvestigations.com/ is now linked to a Google Analytics web property. This was done on the 9/15/12.

Can you answer my following questions please:-

1. I cannot claim my site wpeinvestigations.com on Alexa.com because it states the following: 'Your home page is redirecting (code 302) to an URL on another domain.
Please remove this redirect'. Now I think i have to delete wpe-investigations.com to stop the redirect. Is this correct and if so how do I do it?

2.Once I have done this will it affect my google and alexa ranking at all?

Thank you

Hi Louise,

Generally you place tracking tags on your primary domain as the secondary domain is identical and is really only acting as an alias or referral portal and is not examined for content in a referral or reirect. If you don't apply the tags on wpeinvestigations.com this means that all tracking is directly monitored on your primary domain (wpe-investigations.com) which is what you want.

There won't be any negative effect on doing this but it is saying there may well be if you keep your tracking tags on your secondary site as Alexa appears not to like the redirect presumably seeing this as a kind of manipulative tactic to build up hits with your alias secondary domain.

Google Analytics keeps track of the origin of traffic from other locations and you can easily get the figures from GA for this. Alexa: I don't know if it will report the origin of referrals or links to your site.

If you wish to change your primary site to wpeinvestigations.com then the instructions are outlined: Assigning domains and creating a primary domain. If you wish to unpublish your site to wpe-investigations.com then the instructions for unpublishing: How to unpublish your site.. You then will need to re-publish your site to your preferred domain and if you don't wish any association with wpe-investigations.com, do not include it as a secondary domain. It will sit there parked, where-ever, until the subscription for that domain expires.

okay so I have followed your instructions and that is to unpublish the site and publish it to wpeinvestigations.com. Now it clearly states that the site is indeed published to wpeinvestigations.com. Now when I clicked on wpeinvestigations.com through google search its taken me to this page file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/louise/Desktop/Screen%20shot.htm.
If your site is unpublished, click on "Publish to the web" and then choose "I already own my domain name". Follow the steps until your site is published.

Well I can't seem to find these instructions???????????

I have changed the site back to wpe-investigations.com for the time being as I don't want to be losing any business through this operation. I really don't know what to do now??? (I sent this message before on the 16/09/2013 but didn't get a reply from yola, and I more or less gave up)

P.s can Yola not do this for me? ...it would make more sense for Yola to do it as opposed to someone that doesn't no what to do?

Hello Louise,

I can certainly understand your frustration and we certainly want to work with you to address this. One of my colleagues was able to fix this. You should now be able to pull up your site at: http://www.wpeinvestigations.com.

I've attached a screenshot of this as well. Please confirm if this looks correct to you.

Please note that since you have changed your domain, it will take Google a bit of time to update their information. Please don't be alarmed if your old domain is still showing up in Google's search engine. In addition, I would encourage you to resubmit your sitemap. Please have a look at these instructions.

Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.

Hello, I seemed to have dropped in google ranking from page 1 to page 3 and 4 since my domain name change? Also when clicking on wpe-investigations (my old domain) it says the site is pointing to yola.com. Now I have done some research and it looks like Google have dropped me because of content and meta tag, descriptions are of the same (duplicates). How do I rectify this? Why is wpe-investigations still showing?

Thank you

Hi Louise,

As Sanja mentioned above, "it will take Google a bit of time to update their information". I've been waiting months for some of my old pages to be dropped by Google. It is frustrating I know but unfortunately it's out of our control. I would definitely change the description and title tags (these two are the most important) between the two sites even though Google says you won't be penalized unless it is spammy duplicate content. Bear this in mind though - Google doesn’t want to show the same content to searchers for the same query. Pay special attention to your title tag (up to 70 characters) - it's the first thing a searcher sees.

Hello Boomer,

Thank you so much for your response and advice. Just a quick question for you...will I have to change all my meta tags and descriptions on all pages or just my home page and about us section? If I have to do them all then it looks like I will have to build a completely new site with new content. What about the photo's as well?

Sorry to be such a novice at this but I want to do things properly as no work coming in now! I wish I hadn't of done it!!!

When I have completed what I need to do then how do I go about asking google to crawl it? Also is there anyway that Yola can stop wpe-investigations pointing at Yola? Not sure if this will make any difference? Also, just a thought...Is it possible to change it back..would that make it return to page 1?

Thank you for your time

Hi Louise,

I did this long reply up above and then realized I was on completely the wrong track and deleted it. So, I've done a bit of thinking and this is what I think is the best solution for you to get "wpe-investigations.com" dropped from Google's result page's :

1. Log into your account and go to MyYola
2. Click on "Domains".
3. Under "Add a domain you already own" select "Want to keep your domain registered with another registrar?"
4. As wpe-investigations.com is already pointed to Yola, just type it into the required field, and select the site you'd like to use it with.
5. Click "Add".
6. Follow steps provided.

If your domain now redirects to your subdomain, you can change it by following the steps on this link: My domain is redirecting to my Yolasite subdomain.

I did a search for your site on Google and all looks pretty good to me!

for "wpe investigations" your preferred domain (without the dash) is no1 on page 1 (see screenshot)
for "private investigators Athens" mid page 1
for "private investigators Greece" mid page 2

I'm no SEO expert, but I don't think you're doing to bad there! The only thing I would change (if any) are your title tags (Page > Page Properties > Metadata > Page Title) in the Sitebuilder. All your title tags start off with "your page name" followed by "-Wpe Investigations-Athens-Greece". Take advantage of the fact that Google allows you up to 70 characters and try have more meaningful / descriptive titles.

Have a look at this link or do a Google search for "page title SEO". Also a must: check out a few Matt Cutts (from Google) videos on YouTube.

Good luck :)

Yes I have been looking at Matt Cutts videos, I just wish I had more time to study.
Point taken with your seo tips, I will apply as soon as I physically can.

Now, I have followed your instructions, but forgive me, I am not sure if I have done this correctly. As you know I had changed my domain from wpe-investigations to wpeinvestigations which is the one I want. Now I have added wpeinvestigations to be my primary domain with wpe-investigations being my subdomain. Is this correct? Does this now mean that wpe-investigations will be dropped from googles results page? Does this mean that google will see just wpeinvestigations and not
wpe-investigations? In other words google will not see the 2 domains as 2 sites with duplicate content? sorry to be a pain, but as you can see I'm not quite grasping this!!!!

Thanks again I appreciate your assistance very much.

Hi Louise,

It looks like you have done everything correctly - well done! From what I can tell wpe-investigations.com is now directing traffic to wpeinvestigations.com. So now, when people click on a wpe-investigations link, Google will pick up that it's directing to the wpeinvestigations.com link and update it's records. There's no need to do anything else. Within a short while you will only be seeing your preferred domain showing up in the search results.

Hi there,

Well I seem to be on page 1 for 'Services', but nothing else....I guess it will come with time and I will work on my title tags etc as soon as I can, thanks again for your help with this one!

Now another question for you we have translated my site into the Greek language, but we don't know how to copy the pages and then to upload the Greek content? Can you help with this?

Thank you so much...

Hello Louise

There are multiple options to create a multilingual website with Yola. Please refer to this thread for more information: Multi-lingual Yola website. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Hi Louise,

The best way to copy all the elements of a page is to use the "Save Page As" feature.

Here's how you do it:
1. Navigate to the page you want to copy.
2. Go to Page > Page Properties.
3. Click on the 'Save Page As" icon.
4. The "Save Page As" dialog box will pop-up asking you to name your new page.
5. Click "OK" and you're done. The newly created page will now appear in the page drop-down list.

You can then replace the English text with the Greek version of the text. Also note that if you copy and paste directly from a program like MS Word, the formatting of the text is very likely to break your page. The best way to avoid this is to first copy and paste into a program like Notepad (you should find it in the accessories folder of your computer). This will strip out any unwanted formatting and you can then safely paste into the Text Widget.

Thank you very much for your reply...I have not done it yet as need the time, however in the interim could you please help me with the following:-

I own wpeinvestigations.com which has been designed for the Greek market and have purchased wpeinvestigations.co.uk for the UK market. Now I would like to use the same website layout and understand that I cannot use the same content as it would be duplicate content. How do I go about this issue? I do not want to re-direct as I need the contact us page to be showing UK details only...is there an easy way of doing this or do I have to re-write the whole website? Please advise...Thank you

There is no easy way that I am aware of Louise. You will have to recreate the UK website from scratch.

Hello Boomer...

Ha I knew there was no easy way to go about this...never mind!

Now getting back to the Greek translation of my site...I have carried out your instructions thank you by saving the new Greek pages as 'save as' so they are now all completed. For the English and Greek I have copied the example in the site Kinderbetreuungsverein. The problem is the Greek menu is appearing in the English menu and I don't know how to undisplay the default navigation menu that comes with your Style Template, and create your custom menu. I will tell you what I would like to appear on both sites: The top menu will show home, about us, contact us, private investigation services & Testimonials ONLY. The private investigation services will have a drop down menu consisting of all the other pages/services. You will see this if you visit my site wpeinvestigations.com. Please let me know how to do this or if there is a better alternative?

Thank you very much

Hello loumcphie

In order to use the navigation concept of "Kinderbetreuungsverein", you will need to use a Premium Style because Free Styles do not offer the submenu feature.

If you'd prefer to use a Free Style, you will need to create your completely individual custom navigation menu. This would mean to hide each page, including the home page (index page) in the navigation, create your navigation, e.g. using the Custom Panel Widget or Picture links, and then link between pages manually.

The "Kinderbetreuungsverein" option will be the easiest one. To use it, you must switch your Style Template to a Premium Style. You can then use the submenu feature to add the pages in your two languages.

Please let me know if you have any detailed questions on this.

Hello loumcphie

Our response policy on our Support Forum is 24 hours or sooner.

I did have a look at your website wpeinvestigations.com which you mentioned in your previous post. This website is currently published to a Free Style Template which doesn't have the submenu feature. Your website has the Flyover Menu feature which is not the same as the submenu feature. As said, you will need to switch to a Premium Style Template if you want to use the concept of "Kinderbetreuungsverein". Or did you maybe provide the wrong URL?

What you describe in your previous post, doesn't match with what was done on the "Kinderbetreuungsverein" site, so I first wanted to make sure you can make your choice of the two different concepts for a multi-lingual website under one domain name.

After you've changed your Style Template to a Premium Style, you will need to create two pages, one named "English", the other one named "Greek" (or the Greek equivalent). Then you will need to put each page which you already have or which you still create as a subpage under these two main pages. You can do this by accessing your Page Manager (Page > Page Properties > Navigation), dragging and dropping the subpages below the main pages and then clicking on the green indent arrow to make them subpages of the respective main page. This way you can create a website like "Kinderbetreuungsverein" where there is a two-level navigation, the first level is used for your language links, the second one for your actual pages in the respective language. Please note: The navigation can only support two levels. You can't add more submenus to the actual submenu. All further links need to be added as custom links and to be linked manually.

If you need any further assistance, please let me know.

Ok Stefan, I have done what you have said, but you haven't told me how to create a drop down menu which I had previously asked about in my email written to you 4 days ago. I have looked at the tutorials, but it looks very complicated. I already have a drop down menu on my site which I created but can't remember how I achieved it...it certainly wasn't how I remembered it??? If you can please have a look at wpeinvestigations.com and you will see it there. this is exactly how I want it on my new site. Thank you for all your help.

Hello loumcphie

Okay, let me try to explain again how it works: In your Page Manager (Page > Page Properties > Navigation) you can subordinate pages to other pages. The other pages will be your main pages, and the subordinated pages your subpages.

In Premium Styles these subpages will display as submenus, i.e. a second-level navigation to your main navigation. In Free Styles the same subpages will automatically display as drop down menus (we actually call them "Flyover Menus"). This is how you achieved the drop down menus on your site wpeinvestigations.com, you just used the menu subpages on a Free Style.

Yola currently doesn't offer to combine the two menu display options, i.e. both a second-level navigation and a Flyover Menu. You will need to decide for one of them.

If you'd like to create a multi-lingual website and go for the option used for the "Kinderbetreuungsverein" sample site, you'll need to pick a Premium Style and use the submenu feature. This means that you can't have a Flyover Menu at the same time.

However, if you'd like to keep the Flyover Menus, you can still go for another option to create your multilingual website, which is to create a separate site for your other language and publish this site to a different domain name or to a subdomain of your custom domain which we can create for you if you have your domain with Yola.

I have decided to revert back to my free style template because I want the drop down (fly over) menu. Yes my domain name is with Yola. I would have liked to have purchased wpeinvestigations.gr, but Yola states that it is not allowed? If I get a subdomain name that you can create then what name would you use? Would greece.wpeinvestigations.com be okay and does google rank subdomain names the same as domain names?

Or, will I buy a domain from another company and have it pointed at Yola. The thing is I already have another domain name pointed at yola for the same site, which means I would then own 3 domain names for 1 site which is a bit excessive for me. Please let me know which will be the best alternative as a little confused. It's a shame that the free style and premium style cannot offer the submenus and flyover at the same time...If it did I would be up and running by now...

Hello loumcphie

I'm afraid that Yola currently doesn't offer to register domain names with the extension .gr. However, you could buy it with another registrar and point it to Yola. If you register a .gr domain, you will also create another website which is the Greek version of your English website. Once you've pointed the domain to Yola, you will publish your second website, i.e. your Greek website, to this domain, so you will still have two domain names for your English website, and one domain name for your Greek website. It's always a good idea to have multiple domains. This way you can protect your brand from competitors and you may get better results with search engines. However, if you'd like to remove one of the domains from your English website and let the domain expire, you can always do that. In case you want this, please contact us via e-mail. My personal recommendation would be to keep your domains because of the benefits mentioned.

A top level country code domain like wpeinvestigations.gr would do a bit better on search engines than a custom subdomain like greece.wpeinvestigations.com. So you're welcome to register a new domain name for your Greek website. The benefit of a custom subdomain is that you won't need to spend more money because we can create the custom subdomain for you for free.

It's on our roadmap to offer more flexibility for the navigation options. That said, it will take us some time to make it happen without affecting existing Styles used by our customers.

I have reverted back to my free style template. I am trying to link up some words on my site to the internal pages in my site, but somehow when I check on the box 'page on my site' the drop down menu blinks and doesn't allow me to click on any of the pages? Please can you fix this as there seems to be a technical error.

Thanx

I've checked this functionality in your Yola account directly, using Firefox 25, and I'm unable to replicate the error you report. I can add a link and choose an internal page of your site to link to without problems.

Please try clearing cache and cookies of your browser as this often solves problems at once.

If that doesn't help, please let me know what browser and which browser version you're using, so that I can try to replicate the error you're experiencing.
