I want to use my business name as my domain name instead of my personal name.

I purchased a domain name (MyName.com), and set up a website and published it. Now I changed my mind and I would like to have the site called MyBusiness.com. Can I simply change the URL of the site, give up the MyName.com domain name, and start using the MyBusiness.com domain name, or do I have to pay for the business domain name, and retain the rights to the personal domain name until it expires?

Hi Tracy,

You pretty much have it spot on- if you wanted to change your domain you would need to purchase a new one. Once you have purchased a domain it is registered to you for the allocated period, regardless if you use it or not, so refunds are unable to take place. This is how all registrars work

If you would like to change your domain, you will need to purchase another one by following these steps:

1. Click on the down-arrow next to the green "Publish to the web" button.
2. Click on "Publishing settings".
3. Click on "Unpublish your Site".
4. You will be asked to confirm that you wish to unpublish your site. Click on "OK" and your site will be unpublished.
5. Then click on "Publish to the web", choose the domain you would like to purchase and follow the steps until your site is published.

The purchase of your first domain doesn't have to be a waste though- with Yola you can point out multiple domains to the same site. Meaning, depending on the scenario, type of business card, etc. you could give out myname.com as well as mybusiness.com, and have them both point to the same site.

You can easily assign (publish) these domains to one of your sites by accessing the Advanced Domain Settings. Here's how:-

1. Login to your account on Yola.
2. On the My Sites page, scroll to the bottom and check the box next to "Enable Advanced Domain Settings".
3. Scroll back up to the top and click on the link "Advanced Domain Settings".
4. A new page will open
* If you would like to publish to a domain bought externally, click on [Add a domain that I already own] and you will be able to assign it to the particular site.
* If you bought the domain from Yola, it will already be listed on the page and you will be able to click on the drop-down menu to assign it to a different site.
6. Click on "Click to apply changes".

By assigning a domain as "Primary Domain", this will be the canonical (primary) domain and the one the other domains will redirect to.

Please note: If you have a domain purchased from another domain registrar, it will need to point to Yola in order to work. Steps available here: Publish to a domain you already own.

Hope this helps!
