If images have meaningful names do you still need alternate text?

How do I get my images to come up in a Google image search? I have just been reading the SEO Tutorial 3 - Building your site with SEO in mind, and it mentions the alternate text. Does that mean the the name of my picture isn't used at all? My picture names are generally meaningful, so I haven't bothered with alternate text. Am I right in thinking that I should be bothering? I have always presumed that if you didn't have an alternate text, the default of the picture name would be used.

You need alt text very much and it also helps to have a small description close to your image....Google bots can't read an image and the alt text tells them what it is.

Hi, Jubeadilation,

Just to add a note to what John explained above, some users also browse the internet with images turned off and the alt text lets them know what the image contains.

When I need to go back and tweak things I just do a few pages a day and then it isn't so daunting.

Yes. your right. And when I think about it, I don't need every image to be found!
