Why isn't image optimization a default. Why wouldn't you want a photo optimized?

Hi Linette,

The optimization really refers to optimal efficiency on screen and for loading times.

There are a number of reasons why optimisation aren't selected: hi res images for enlargement or paper printing (monitors are far less critical in the image rendering than a printer), optimisation can and does take out a fair bit of fine detail which doesn't affect the interpretation of the image but just nips some of the crispness.

Algorithms used for image optimisation are a generalisation that may not fit a specific image so well so the option of not "optimising" is a very handy option in these and other situations.

I don't want it by default. I've noticed, with optimization most pictures come up of crap quality (try out your site on all possible browsers and smart phones). I use optimization for big pics only, yet again - sometimes. However, if your site is built out of images, you should use opti more widely.

I agree with both and won't use the online optimisation offered here. I have never seen a good image that I have placed through the opt process.

KTD has a lot of experience of this and superb images displayed on his site in content, composition and presentation. I presume he uses a professional image manipulation program? (P/shop?)

Do very little other than make them a web friendly resolution....That is where people get confused...Resolution is not quality it is size. What I started doing with the Photo Gallery feature is go ahead and leave photos large as the gallery does not slow down your page load. This way if my visitor wants to see larger they can.

Don't have Photoshop....Most powerful program I do use is Gimp and it is free also.Has tons of free plugins and actually paint.net has many free plugins. I did just get a new Wacom tablet that once I am used to it will help me do much more detailed creations with my art work.

Wow.

School children in Thailand Ministry of Education Schools are being given Galaxy tablets in grade 1. I doubt that it's this one though.

If it is maybe I'll head back to Grade 1 :)

Thanks everyone. My site is primarily a catalogue of jewelry I've designed and sell. I use Panasonic DMC-TZ1. Through trial and error use the zoom as macro wasn't giving me the clarity I want. The pics run between 87 and 150KB and I thought the optimization would make the site load better. I've been editing with Picassa/Picnic which won't be available much longer. Kodak Easyshare has been suggested for someone with my limited camera/computer skills. Any thoughts on that?

I'd be interested to hear others views.

With the file sizes that you are speaking of I would let them go at that size. OK a little greater than the general recommendation but I think for jewellery which generally is fine and micro detail and it's what people will judge the product on, so give it your best shot :)

If you are concerned about download times investigate KTD's gallery suggestion or limit your images per page and create follow on pages if they are of the same category and set up pages per category. There would be many ways to accommodate this and you know how your products group well so go with your feeling on the groupings and keep them limited per page if that's your style.

I'll check those out. A friend uses Kodak Easyshare with success. It'll be a change being able to phone or visit her with my problems. Yola's great but since I can't afford Silver, waiting for email responses to issues in the middle of a project makes me want to pull my hair out ;0)

...and I will go back to my serene analog times, with telephones with dials and auto-mechanic occupation in all-manual garage. I can't compete with children with Galaxies any more...

@ Linette -- also try to use HTML widget instead of Picture one. Finer sharper pictures come up this way for some mysterious reason. Also, easier to manage them in terms of size and interlinking. Simply place your pictures somewhere on the net - you can create hidden password protected page on your website as well for this purpose (your garage) - then upload all your stuff there first. Then, link HTML widget to each picture you wish (you will need to use HTML language code which I can't post here, not allowed). It also makes your website more dynamic, hence attractive to folks, with many gadgets to play around. It lowers bounce rate while increases average time on your website (Google Analytics stuff...).
