ipad issues

Hi all...

There are a few topics regarding ipad, but I thought it best to add a new thread, being that this is of great importance.

So, ipad - apple, the whole world is bonkers about it.. how does it effect the way we as developers need to consider it... Well, most of my clients use ipads. A lot of them have recently informed me that they have to 'click twice' to open up a Menu-Link. (Not good) Although it only seems like a petty little glitch, it's actually major.. some ipad users might not click twice and think the page is a dud and leave a website. (Silly, but true)

WHY does an ipad user have to click twice on some of the yola menus?!

Well.. ipad doesn't have a mouse... so, the first click often calls up the mouse-over. So, if your menu writing is black, but on mouse hover-over it changes to red, then the chances are an ipad viewer will have to click twice on the menu heading, before the page opens.

There are a few fixes that I've managed to search online, but I don't have an ipad to test these on.

I was hoping other yola users share similar interest in making sure their websites work as good as they can on all OS and browsers... so, if this is the case, let's share some ideas and try to fix this irritating bug.

Fixing this irritating bug is an irritatingly hard task because of the limited amount of access you have to your sites HTML.

The way I always got around that is by using JavaScript to edit HTML dynamically. But again, I need the URL to your site so I can actually see what i'm dealing with and then I can see if there is actually something inside of the HTML that is making you click twice on the items.

In that case then all you will need to do is add the jQuery code into your site and below it add:

<script type="text/javascript">
$(document).ready(function(){
$('a').on('click touchend', function() {
window.location = $(this).attr('href');
});
});
</script>

This is kinda the same code as on Stackoverflow (btw, a very good developers site) but I just made it a little smaller and added an onDomReady event.

This should fix your issue for all touch devices.

Hey man, it would be amazing if you could pls describe where one places the snippet of code you suggested for the fix. I'm really having difficulties with this one and it seems you have the answer, but not shared it clearly enough. I think we'd add great value to the forum if we manage to RESOLVE this issue. Loads of people use ipads and soon developers who use Yola will realize that there is a bug which needs fixing... and we can fix it! :)

Hi mik,

I think Yola are hamstrung on this a bit. There was a response several months ago from Pete (?) regarding the iOS platform and Yola not being able to commit to development of a system for this platform.

I guess that all resources are finite and iOS is still a new comer with other platforms competing successfully. Which one do you bet upon I guess is a consideration? I hate mediocrity but I recognise limitations and accept that this is one of those situations.

If there are user fixes then they have to be discovered from our side and I guess it has to be a critical mass of users who have the knowledge and interest to work out these fixes.

That's exactly what I was hoping we would have.. an interest in finding a fix. There has got to be a solution... adding an html snippet to each page?! I may just have to revamp the site and make sure there is no hover-over on the menu. Just not sure... thanks for your input Gop.

Hello Mick

Can you please try and add this code to an HTML Widget for each page of your site? Place the HTML Widget at the very top of the page. I'm not that advanced as Shawn is, so I'm not sure if it will work, but I'd suggest to just try it. Don't forget to publish. Once done, please let me know, and I'll be able to check it for you on an iPhone.

Hi Stefan, sorry it took a while to get back to you about this issue...

Well... that code seems completely pointless... doesn't work.
Regardless of that HTML code, the FLY-OVER MENU WORKS on an ipad!
Even though it has a HOVER-OVER. My regular Menu fails to activate on first touch.. that is when the hover-over is activated... the second touch will open up each relevant stage.

So... Yola is like almost there... whatever the engineers used to code the fly-over menu, should be implemented on all styles... because they will then finally be functioning correctly on the apple platforms. - Can't be that hard?!

I really thought Shawn would be able to have a bit more input on this matter. But I guess he doesn't have the time. Yola have said a few times that this is not priority for them to address at this moment in time.. shame really.. seems really easy to fix.

If anyone has any more input, please do add to this thread. One would expect everyone who uses Yola to be able to feature their sites on apple platform no questions asked and no hitches or glitches... we'll see.

Regards,

Mick
