I have my domain not purchased through Yola (http://www.thisexample.com) and I was wondering if it was possible to create a subdomain through Yola anyway? (e.g. http://news.thisexample.com)

Hi Joseph,

You definitely can create subdomains with the domain you've purchased from Yola by setting up A Records. Here's how:

1. Login to your Yola account and make sure you are on the "My Sites" page.
2. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and tick the box next to "Enable advanced domain settings".
3. You will be scrolled back up to the top, click on "Advanced domain settings".
4. To access the domain settings, click on [Details] next to the related domain.
5. To access the A Record, click on [Edit this?] next to DNS Entries.
6. You'll need to add to add two A Records, make sure that "A" is selected next to "Add a new DNS Record Type" and click on the "Add" button.
7. Under "Name" add the subdomain you would like to use (eg. group).
8. Under "Value" add Yola's IP address (208.75.208.172).
9. On the second A Record, under "Name" add *.name (where name is your subdomain) and the IP address is the same.
10. Your subdomain is then available as www.group.mysite.com (for example).
11. You will be able to publish a new site to that subdomain by choosing "Use my Domain" when clicking on "Publish my Site".

I hope that helps! Please let us know if you need any other information.

Yeah I've seen a lot of those instructions around these forums, but they're all for domains that HAVE been purchased through Yola. My question is relating to a domain that hasn't been purchased through Yola.

I'm sorry Joseph - I don't know why I misread that :)

You can definitely have a subdomain pointing to Yola - pretty much the same way. If you'd like to let us know who is hosting your domain, I can try and find some more info for you on their website.

Hi Joseph

Nearly there! If you are seeing a placeholder page this means that you need to publish your site to your domain (address).

If your site is not published to a subdomain, follow these steps:

1. Click on "Publish My Site"
2. Select "I already own my domain name" and then "Next step".
3. Enter your domain name and follow the prompts to publish your site.

If your site is already published to another domain name you can publish it by:

1. Clicking on the drop down arrow next to the yellow "Update My Site" button.
2. Click on "Publishing Settings".
3. Click on "Add a Domain you Own".
4. In the dialog box that opens, add in your new domain name and publish your site.
5. If your domain now redirects to your subdomain, please follow the steps on this link to make that change.

Please get back to me if you have any difficulty getting your site up and running.

Hi!

I tried adding the domain (http://www.mydomain.com), but it says that it's not pointed to Yola. I pointed the IP of the subdomain yesterday.

I also tried adding the subdomain (http://subdomain.mydomain.com) but is says the same thing.

Can you please let us know the domain name you're trying to point to Yola? I'd like to verify if the settings have been configured properly. Thanks.

Hi Joseph

Thanks for the information. When I look up your domain settings, I see that republicofa1.net is not yet pointed to Yola. The IP address is still pointing to 195.216.243.36

Your subdomain (portal.republicofa1.net) domain settings are partially correct. I see that you have only one A Record pointing to Yola.

Please make sure you have 2 A records set up. If you would like your domain to work correctly with the "www" prefix you need to make sure that your DNS settings are configured correctly to support the "www" prefix. For this you need to set up two A-records:

* Some domain registrars require one A Record with the hostname "@" and one with the hostname "www".
* Other domain registrars allow you to create one hostname called "domain.com" and another "www" (replace "domain" with your own address).
* Both should point to our IP address: 208.75.208.172.

For more information on pointing your domain to Yola, click on this link.

Please let us know if you still have trouble with this.
