I'm looking for some expert information on google listings. I've been working pretty hard on my site, I add content almost every day, just managed to get a page rankig at last of 2/10 and found my website at no.2 after entering a certain search, which I was very, very happy about. Two, maybe three days later now, I've just done the same search and Im at 162 ... I was hovering around 70 for about 4 months, and now, after huge effort and constant updating, using SEO tools, streamling my site, text etc etc I've dropped 160 places in a few days ... how? Why?

Hi Will,

God only knows why you dropped so much.

I would suggest you use this tool, http://website.grader.com

I noticed you are not listed with yahoo and you could perhaps try to add more inbound links.

I would also reccommend adding a new site map to google about once a week and if you dont already add analytics to every page.

Hope this helps, Lee.

Hey Will buddy please don't worry so much about something that fluctuates like the weather. I know it is a hard thing to handle but things will get better. With all the hard work you are putting into your site the rewards will come sooner than later I think.

You know I fought long and hard to learn the ins and outs of SEO and to tell you the truth I get lucky more times than my skill pulls me ahead. I learn something and then months go by and forget and must relearn it all over again. My brain damage (scar tissue) really throws my memory for a loop and I struggle all the time.

I don't know the secret to getting high on the first few pages. I wish that I did so that I can pass it along to you and make things easier.

I think that my result were a combination of hard work (as you are doing), dumb luck and the man upstairs.

While page rank does say a great deal about a website and its foothold on the web it does not tell you the entire story. You see H.B.P went from 0 to 2 to 4 to 3 to 4 and now back to 2 again all within the last 12 months. Am I sad about being a 2 right now? No not entirely... The reason for this rise and fall are many but I feel that several months ago when Google cleaned house and updated their systems I went from over 1200 inbound links to a mere 200. To see this was a shock in itself but again it is better to be confident and journey on than fall behind with grief. Right now I show 380 inbound links with GW but I am sure that there are many more that are simply hiding.

Is this stopping my site from being within the first 5 pages of of 90% of my search keywords and phrases? A resounding NO...

What I see as your ace in the hole is the forums. Like you have been doing all this time soak up all the useful info all those that have come before you can share. I do still scour the web trying to find tools to use and ways to enrich my site. I leave my trail of breadcrumbs along the way and hope that the search engines follow them to H,B,P

I had shared in the following thread my brush with disaster, falling down the hill of search results and crawling back up again. It was only 5 months ago that I went from being on the first 5 pages page of most searches to so far out there that I stopped looking for my site. Mine was a little stupidity and mistakenly removing my text content and putting it into un-searchbot friendly scroll boxes. Like you I saw a kind of nightmare. I had not looked at my search results for several months and one day I looked and was taken aback by simply not being there. I was sad and depressed but I used that to pull myself up and try to find out the reasons why I dropped so suddenly.

I replaced my text content, made sure that my content matched my keywords well and went on a link dropping binge and found a great one which gave me over 100 inbound links within weeks (I shared it at the following thread)

The motherload of inbound link generators...

http://getsatisfaction.com/yola/topic...

Now I am not saying that my disaster in any way is similar to yours but what I am trying to impress upon you is that this kind of thing happens all the time and we as now skilled site builders must learn from them and better our sites and in turn ourselves.

We will survive my friend... You will return and be stronger for it. Our search results fluctuate all the time and we must learn from them and simply carry on.

I have spent the last hour writing you in a sleepy eyed daze and hope that my words, thoughts and sentences make sense... ;) LOL

Always remember "Happy site building"

Hey Duke

I am listed with yahoo, according to SEO page ranker Im at around 130 with yahoo. It's Live that Im not with. I've tried 3 times now to get listed with them, but no use. I spaced my submission about 2 months apart from one another and still no joy. Will check out your tool recommendation.

Ed .... Ed, not sure what to say really. Thank you kindly for taking so much time to stop my chin from dropping, I will progress, survive and come out on top Im sure. I just might leave it in the hands of someone who does this for a living. I already work abot 70 hours a week with my business, I can no longer face workoing this hard, and then some, to be kicked squarley in the acorns by Mr. Google and his evil search machine!

I am intereste in the motherload links thing, however, arent we told to stay clear of links that have nothing to do with what your site is about? Guess I couldnt make things any worse!

Hello Will....Here is a tutorial I made showing how to verify with Bing (used to be MSN LIve)http://kanthaidecor.com/live-verify-t....

The motherload of links is you advertising ... it happens to be free and does not add no follow tags....Sites like the one Ed is talking about also have categories to choose from...If you are in the right category then you relate IMO.

Only problem is I don't live in America. So I can't get the mother of all inbound links.

Could adding a Skype widget have knocked down my listing so radically? I put two in the other day and when I Xenued my site it classed them as broken links. I've had issues with widgets before, even getting an old site put into the supplemetal index because of a translation widget.

I've also applied for Bing, submitted my site a few weeks ago when I saw it on the News here in England. Still not listed with them.

Hey Will here is a great one to use it lists your sitemap with 4 search engines at the same time. I use it at least once a month or weekly when i changed my site often. Don't do it every day or they will ban your site as an over submitter.

http://www.sitemapwriter.com/notify.php

In the URL box just add your lndex page URL followed by

sitemap.xml

h t t p;//yoursiteURL.com/sitemap.xml

YOLA produces a sitemap for you automatically and it is not located in your Resources folder.

Additionally, in regards to the need to live in America thing... I would say it is worth a shot to maybe post in the computer/internet page and share your site and how you built it for FREE. What could it hurt? Talk a little bit about your site and what it is about using some of your keywords and then use my zip 98053 at the bottom. Do they need to know that you are in the UK? I don't think so as location is not an issue when giving free advice or helping others... I posted one there months ago about how I built my site for free and just today I shared one more in addition to one in the Wanted section for things of a nautical nature for a play pirate ship I am building.

Keep your chin up Buddy

Will Google has certain bots that monitor keywords and clicks, If a site similiar to yours is being clicked more it attains a higher rank.

Example:
Examples Auto Part store, Clicked 2,000 times from a Google search
(Attains a higher position)

Example 2 Auto Part Store, click 1,200 times from a Google Search.
(Loses a position)

Google monitors alot of various things such as,

Time spent on the site
Time spent searching before found you.
Searches of certain keywords

And alot more.

Mine doesn't come from Search engines, It comes from listings of what i do and my services.

My Uploader - "FrostBytez File Host" Listed on "FreeWebSpace.net" #2 Rank.

Find some free listing sites and add what your website does and what it offers, That should help your traffic :)

Thanks all.

Ed, I've used your zip code and have plopped myself onto the motherload, thank you kindly. I've also used the sitemap writer which came up wth something interesting. yahoo says they have never heard of me, but Im on their listings ... when I do a SEO tool page rank checker I come up in their listings. I'm also placed in their local business listings ... hmmmm...

John. I'm going to leave the Bing alone for the moment as it was only about a month ago I submitted to them, dont want to hastle them as I hear it can work against you.

FrostBytez, thanks for chipping in. I've already been over and placed myself up and on all the free UK business listings where my business doesnt seem out of place. Do you think placing myself in the US business listings would count against me? Has anyone thought about geographic location before as something that could count against you? Guess it's pretty hard for the bots to work this one out.

And last but not least, Duke! I love the website grader. I'm in the process of getting myself up and on all the blog spots and bookmarking sites etc etc. Would never have thought of that. Cheers again, you're a "ledge", as we say here in the UK!

Arrrggghhh!!!! I'm convinced that Google doesnt like widgets. Well, the widgets that I use. I had two Skype widgets that I put in and the next day I dropped over 160 places in the google listings. I've taken them out and 10 days later, after being crawled again I'm back at Number 4 in the list ... coincidence? I don't think so!

Well in your case I might think about keeping your index page free of them ;)

Sorry to hear it my friend...

Even though I don't have one on my site I have in my past but don't recall if that effected the results. I don't see why it would but stranger things have happened...

I don't want to risk it LOL
