Links to a website not important anymore for Google search ?

In the SEO-Checklist at Yola, the importance of link-building on a website is emphasised.
Earlier this year the Google president announced that Google will stop seeing links to a website as being important for search-results from google-bots. Are SEO-consultants and firms sleeping or am I badly informed ?

Will internet collapse because nobody is visiting blogs and social media sites anymore to create links to their websites ?

By the way: congratulations to Yola for their innovative products and services !

I think links are still seen as important, perhaps links from different sources are thought of with more or less value.

For example lets say me and you had similar sites and we both had a link to each others site, this is still thought of as important by search engines. The 2 links validate themselves. Perhaps 1 way links are being fizzled out of importance. I believe thats 1 of the reasons 'no follow' links where introduced.
If someone leaves 100 links a day on social sites its not really worth anything, If 2 sites swap links it is.

Hi Jutien,

That is a good question. There are some things to keep in mind with link building, the main information that a search engine gathers from the amount and type of links that come into a site are what level of authority a website has in a specific topic area.

When a site has a large number of links coming into it from all over the web, links from other sites that are of the same topic area and/or links from very well established websites, this tells the search engine that other webmasters think enough of a site to link to it. It is the search engines job to show searchers the best information/website possible for their query, and the more authority a website has, the more likely the search engine will be to want to return it to the searcher.

Google will continuously change what they look for, and they may be coming to a point where certain link types don't mean as much because of the way they are being gathered.

Links will probably always be important and telling to the search engines, but the types of links that mean something will continue to evolve. The best links will come organically when your website is well established and other websites find the information to be useful enough that they want to create a link to you.

As you develop links now in forums, social networking sites, article directories and by exchanging, this will be helpful as well. Remember, links will still bring people to your site when clicked on!

Hope this helps a bit!

I do get referrals every single day from sites that I have traded links with....From my own reading I don't find that Google or others are getting away from links helping your SEO...What they do seem to be doing is stressing more and more that linking sites really do need to be relevant to each other. If you trade links with just anyone and everyone I think it is going to harm PR much more in the future....Until I stop seeing in SEO tips on Google's on webmaster pages stressing the importance of one way/reciprocal links I will continue to build my links pages.
