I have created a site for a friend of mine. A single over 40 year old who wanted to start a social club... I have seen on "free sites" that you can create a members page to invite members and "chat" to them... kind of like blogs but not blogs! How do i add something like that... to invite members... Its 1st time making site so tell me what you think. www.socialgettogether.com... No content, just layout so far...

While I think Synthasite is great there are other places better suited and or are nothing but social sites. The biggest and I think the best for this is ning.com . I use them for my family social site since we are all spread out these days and it works great.

Thanks John! I have not used ning.com but will surely check it out.

Another option for a social feature is Google Friend connect.

Google Friend Connect is a service that allows you to create social features for your site by allowing people to sign up and become members, right on your site! People can join with their Google, Yahoo, AIM or OpenID accounts, and interact on your site, by inviting friends, posting media or making comments. For more information, click here: Google Friend Connect.

Please note that in order to use this feature on your site, your site needs to be published first. If your site is not published yet, please see our tutorial: Publishing Your Site.

Adding Google Friend Connect to your SynthaSite website is easy! Here are the steps:
1) Go to Google Friend Connect.
2) Click the big blue button that says "Set Up a New Site"
3) You will be taken to an Overview page. Familiarize yourself with it, and then click "continue" to follow Google Friend Connect's 4-step setup process.

Step 1: On the next page you will see two boxes where you need to fill in:
> 1.1) Your site name: This is the name you gave your site when you created it and the default heading that appears on all your pages.
1.2) Your home URL: This is the address of your homepage. Your home URL is the domain name you used to publish your site, followed by: /index.php
Fill in these boxes. When you are done, click continue

Step 2: The next page asks you to download two files. PLEASE IGNORE THIS STEP! We have already done this for you. Simply click "continue"

Step 3: You will be taken to a page to test your set up. Simply click the "test to finalize set up" button. Google will use the URL you submitted to look for the two files, which we have already added to your site on your behalf.
When you do Step 3: "Test your setup", you should see the following message at the top of the Google page: "Your changes have been saved". That means that Google has successfully detected the two required files.

Step 4: On the next page you will be able to configure and customize your Google Friend Connect Members' Gadget and preview what it will look like. When you are happy with it, click "generate code" and copy all of the HTML embed code Google provides to your computer clipboard.

Now you need to go back to your SynthaSite to install the widget. Don't worry - we're almost done!

1) In SynthaSite, drag and drop an HTML widget onto your page. This is located in the Properties sidebar on the right of your screen, directly below the Two Column Layout widget. A dialog box will open up. Paste the code into this box and then click "ok"!

2) Click the yellow "Update My Site" button.

When adding a Members Gadget to your SynthaSite page, the gadget will not show up properly until you update (republish) your site. While you are editing or previewing your site, Google cannot match your site address to display the gadget. Do not be alarmed if you see an error message before you publish, such as: "We're sorry... This gadget is configured incorrectly. ...". Just click "Update my Site" and the gadget should appear correctly configured.

That's it! Your site is now verified with Google Friend Connect and you can start using this great new feature to grow a community on your very own website.

Hope this helps!

Hello,
Is it possible for you to give us a screen shot of the error message you receive. Also, are you pasting the html code into an html widget?

What browser are you currently using? We would suggest Firefox as this seems to work best. It is a free download of you would like to give it a try: Download Firefox.

Please let us know how this is going for you.

I took a look at the page with Google Friend Connect and it seems to be working? I was able to click through to sign up, although I didn't complete the sign up. Are you getting that error message in your Site Builder? Did you check back through the instructions for set up to see if there was something configured incorrectly? I took a look at the site, it look really nice, the background on the home page is great!

Hello SGTG,

The error you got is an expected error. It only happens at the time you install it and is also seen when you are editing that page. It's a small bug but it doesn't affect the function at all. If you now go to view your site you will see it as it should look.

What you see is the Members Gadget. This gadget shows the people who have signed up to join as members on your site. They appear in the lower main body of the gadget. The upper row will show anyone who has joined and is currently signed in.

To actually communicate with members you have two options. The first is to install another gadget called the "wall gadget" or better yet you can install the Google Friend "Social bar". To install either of these gadgets you login to Google Friend Connect http://www.google.com/friendconnect/

Your site is a social site and I think that adding the Social bar to all your pages is really in your best interests since you would want to meet&greet members and new signees as they come to your site rather than you doing work on another page and not noticing peoples presence.

It's a really good looking site. Very nice layout and atmosphere.

The small blank square means that it is still loading SGTG. I think it's working but at the moment it's slow . Google can be extremely variable in speed and maybe their feed to you is slow at the moment. Does Google have an in-country presence in SA?

What version of Internet Explorer are you using? Possibly that is the problem because I am seeing it on Firefox, IE 7 and Safari just fine.

Hi SGTG,

For the sake of illustrating the successful installation I've joined your site. I'll unjoin shortly.

You will notice that there is nothing that enables you to communicate with me or me with you. That is why I mentioned the other gadgets as extra installations.
