Missing title tags? What does it mean, and what, if anything, should I do?

Google Webmaster Tools is advising me that I lack title tags for many pages of lilnyet.com. I checked my sites PsychedelicTreehouse.com and ScratchinPostComics.com. Like the first site, PTH is missing many tags. SP is missing a few, fairly tightly clustered. Reading the HTML, I found title tags seem to be present on all pages, and that they title the page "Synthasite." Please tell me more about these findings, whether there is anything that should concern me, and what impact the Synthasite name in the title has on how the page is managed by SEs. Also, is there merit in adding a title tag with more accurate content information, or would this disrupt the programming? Thanks as always!

Hi Bengo

My understanding is that the title tag is one of the most important for search engine optimization. See: http://www.highrankings.com/allaboutt...

In SynthaSite you can edit your title tag for the page by clicking on the "Properties" sidebar for each page and then inserting or editing the tag in the "Window Title" field. (see screenshot below)

You can then check the HTML source code to see that the title tag is showing up by right clicking on your page in preview mode or on your published site and looking for the title tag in the code.

If the tag is present in the code, and Google Webmaster tells you it is not, then I am at a bit of a loss. I will have to read up more on that.

should have added: right click on the page, and then click "view page source"

I had a look at your Li'l Nyet site and I found that you were in fact missing title tags. Your Home and About/Contact pages had title tags. This is what I found in the page source:

<!-- <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
<title>Lil_Nyet</title> -->

However, I looked at several other pages and found this:
<!-- <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
<title></title> -->

As you can see in the second portion of code the title tag is empty.

Try adding title tags in the properties sidebar as explained above. Then check the HTML source for those pages. If the title tags are not present in the code, please let me know.

Excellent! I understand completely and will report back with results. I misunderstood the function of the Window title as being associated with the page title you can opt for when creating a new page.

I'm sure I speak for most of the users you have assisted when I say, You'll always be our cupcake. We appreciate all you have done very much.

The title and description are two of the most important things that search engines look at when analysing a page, but they must be backed up by the actual content of the page itself as well - otherwise they will smell a rat!

Within the Google results displayed when you perform a search, it is nearly always the title and description that are used.
