My pictures aren't generating a preview when uploading them using the Picture Gallery...

I have tried to re-upload the pics I'm trying to add, deleting the pics and up-loading them again, starting a new gallery, and nothing works. I have also checked all of my plug-ins (which are up-to-date) and cleared my cache which still didn't help. What happens, specifically, is when I try to add certain pictures onto my picture galleries (all pages are having the problem); the picture loads, but then freezes up when it gets to "Generating Thumbnails." If I click save while at this point (I waited about 15 minutes for it to load- a couple times) the image doesn't save to the Picture Gallery. Some pictures work and some don't....

Hello Amber

I have checked the pictures you have uploaded for your picture galleries, and they all have a very large file size (more than 1MB). If you upload large files like that, it will take a long time for them to be uploaded, you will reach your storage limit quickly, and when visitors open your website, it will take long for them to load your site which may make them leave your site immediately.

Especially if you have several pictures on one page, we recommend to downsize them to 30-100KB per picture.

For further information please see our tutorial Optimizing the images you add to your site.

Thank you! I will try to minimize them and see how it turns out :)

Hello, I'm having this same problem. I resized and reloaded my photos to no more than 263KB and they still won't generate thumbnails.

Click here to see my Yola site.

I have two photo galleries on my site which are larger than what I'm trying to do today. They have fairly large files on them. However, they uploaded easily and load on the site right away. So, I don't understand why today I have to make the files even smaller. And, still not working.

Also, I don't know why this is considered solved if Amber Jones has not posted that the gallery widget is now working.

Hello Sister Irene

I have checked your Yola account and created a Test Page on your website (don't worry, the page is not in your navigation, and you can delete it any time again yourself).
I added a Yola Picture Gallery to that test page and chose 6 pictures from your Yola File Manager at the same time to upload to the gallery. All of that worked fine and quickly on my end.

It is not easy for us to find the cause for issues if we cannot replicate them. We know that users quickly think it's a general problem with Yola if they experience any, but in 99% of all cases it's on the user's side (unless we have announced that there is currently a bug that is being fixed).

It is recommendable to clear your browser's cache and cookies regularly, especially if you upload a lot of files. It is also recommendable to use rather small image files because it may be true that they load quickly on your computer, but for people who have a slower connection or computer they will load slowly. Also, if you upload a lot of large files to your Yola File Manager, you will reach the storage limit of your website quite soon and not be able to add more files unless you delete some or upgrade to a bigger package.

Many issues are related to the specific browser or computer the users use. So a good thing to investigate would also be to try in a different browser and on a different computer and check if you experience the same problems there.

If Yola support thinks that a problem is solved because we have given all options to trouble-shoot, we may decide to mark the post as solved. This, however, doesn't affect our attention to further posts on the thread, so if users post that the problem persists or new issues have come up, we'll be certainly investigating further, and do our best to help you. I hope this makes sense.

Thank you, Stefan, for your thorough response. I realize that the problems are not always, probably not often, the fault of Yola. I am absolutely delighted with Yola, as a matter of fact.

When I do run across something that's not working as usual, I visit the forum to see if there is any announcement about that feature, or if anyone else is having the same problem. And, this time, I ran across this post.

As it happened, when I tried the same task later, the feature worked, as it had for you. The photo gallery is a great feature.

Thank you for your help. Peace be with you.

Update on the Picture Gallery 'freeze' problem -- generating thumbnails

For anyone who reads this post and is having a similar problem, there is currently a documented bug in the SiteBuilder "create thumbnail" process, linked to some JPG image files. This can cause the Picture Gallery widget to freeze at the "generating thumbnails" menu. If you import JPG images via SiteBuilder's File Manager, you will also see this problem when thumbnails images are not created. (File Manager does not crash or freeze, however.)

This problem is being worked by the Yola dev team. In the mean time, you can avoid the glitch by converting your JPG files to PNG format. Here is an example screen cap of File Manager, with the same image file in JPG format vs PNG:
