Need some feedback on new site!

I've been hard at work on one of my new site's.
It is part of a much bigger travel website and there is still quite
a bit of work to do. (banners, backgrounds, links, contacts etc.)

In the mean time, I thought I'll share what I've done so far and
try and get some feedback... and hits of course ;-)

It's a community based website and where better to start than with
the area I live in. Oh.... and Monique btw.

Tell me what you think: http://www.helderberg.cc/

Thanks Alex,

That scroller, although it looks pretty simple, was not easy
to do. The scroller is actually an iframe of another site
that I created just to host the ads. If you are really interested
in using this, I will attempt to explain.

Hey Connor,
To quote Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_af...

South Africa is known for its diversity in cultures, languages, and
religious beliefs. Eleven official languages are recognised in the constitution.
English is the most commonly spoken language in official and commercial
public life; however, it is only the fifth most-spoken home language.

I thought you were refering to the "Afrikaans" newspaper headlines ;-)
To answer your question. There's a lot of HTML, javascript and CSS and
it's all built with the yola site builder... of course!!

Hi Boomer,

It's a fantastic selection of elements. The thing that impressed me initially was the combination of the static banner over the slideshow. That really holds it together fantastically. The images are great.

Your selected partners at the bottom of the page add a specific community ownership and that's clever. Snippets of relevancy ground and reassure the traveller.

The scrolling panels, besides their advertising content, actually inject some travel style movement onto the page. It holds attention.

The use of the cookie is clever. Website welcomes can be boring but "welcome back" and "I remember your last visit" is quite personal and effective. Good work.

A fantastic project Boomer and can't wait for future instalments.

Aaah...Peter and Littlus,
The unofficial yola website reviewers.
You two have really got a way with words. I'm still blushing.

Littlus, you impress me more every day with your involvement here
on Get Satisfaction. Your personality shines through your writings.
You must be a really nice person. Thanks for the kind words.

Peter, Peter, Peter. What can I say, but thanks for the thorough review.
I timed you there and you were on the site for 7m22s ;-)
Thanks buddy for the long hard look and all the positive feedback.
Really appreciate.

beautifull boomer - some excellent elements. It sounds stuipid offering any feedback beacuase its so good, only thing i noticed was the lack of a fav icon - apart form that the whole thing is outsatnding

PS. Is it hard making the images which slowly change?
i have just added a bit of java to my site which chooses random images, but its on a refresh, http://hexham.info, i would love to add changing images to a new page im currently working on

thanks Lee.

Hey Lee,

The code for the fade-in image slideshow can be found here:
http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicin...

Its really easy to use and you can have several slideshows running
independently on the same page which will suit your application perfectly.

Only one problem though. IE does not show the smooth transitions.
Works in all the other browsers though. Let me know if you need any help
implementing it on your site.

Hey Emmy, come on over. You can stay with Monique for free ;-)
Nice cheap holliday. Want me to organise the tour?. Just kidding!!

I'm really glad you took that screenshot. I picked up that the "whats hot"
text is stacked. I checked the site in Safari for code functionality a while
back, but have not checked the layout recently.

You made me take another look. I also noticed that the drop down
selection boxes overlap to the right. I'll have to fix this.
Thanks for the compliments.

Wow! When I first saw the site I was debating if it was created with Yola. It's amazing what you can do with Yola... I've been working on my site for about 12 or more hours a day every day and still ain't up to par yet... feel free to check it out!

Ok..... I need testers please.

I've fixed the stacked text and the drop down boxes in Safari (I think?)

I'm having problems with my IE8, (Needs adobe plugin but wont let me install)
so if anyone can do a screenshot in IE for me I would be gratefull.

Finally, could someone tell me what time the "local time" is displaying?
It should be GMT +2. Thanks.

Sorry I am coming to this thread so late - I was mostly occupied with non-forum stuff yesterday and nearly missed out on seeing this. What a tragedy that would have been.

Totally awesome site showcasing the even more awesome place that Boomer, myself and Ruth are lucky enough to live in.

I was quite excited to see some of my favorite restaurants and hang outs featured on the home page. Almost as good as seeing your house on TV! :)

You really have done a stunning job. With further development you could rival the other Helderberg info sites. I would get such a kick out of it if your site came up on page 1 of Google. Hope you take the challenge :)

Now Emmy will have to visit! Offers of free accommodation in the Helderberg now open. But only if your name is Emmy and you own an official Yola shirt :)

Hey Boomer cool site buddy... You have a great looking site there. I had a little chuckle when I saw your little below the footer addition. Hmmm where did you get the idea for that little number I wonder? LOL You have been a busy little BEE... (wink, wink)
All in all a kick butt travel site that should get some major traffic in the months and years to come. It should keep you occupied with all the future updates and additions. Just wait for all those business to take notice and ask you to include them.

Wish I had more time to give you more praise but it is most late here and I seem to be up to my ears in honey. I mean tasks... ;)

Keep it up my friend...

Monique: Thanks for taking the time to have a look.
I really needed the nod from someone who knows the area.
Did not realise Ruth also came from round here - small world.
Don't you worry, that site WILL be on top some day soon, just
give it, and me, time ;-)

Ed: Thanks for coming in from the cold to do the review.
Appreciate the good words from the pro, and yes the "opacity
onmouseover" code was your addition. Works well - thanks bud!

Grace: From the lady of "few words" with the most beautiful site,
you always choose the choice ones (good thing). Thanks very much.

While I'm at it... Emmy: If you get tired of staying with Monique
or Ruth, I know of another place you could crash. Don't worry about
the Yola shirt (tongue in cheek) Sorry, just couldn't resist ;-)

Hey Boomer

Something I noticed on your site that I just wanted to share with you and you can do with this as you like.

This concerns your scrolling slideshow on the right.

When I went on your site, at first I thought there was something wrong with the slideshow as there was a big expanse of white after the last image scrolling up. Then, after waiting for a few minutes, I realized that it was coming around again.

Is there a way to enable the slideshow to have a continuous loop without the big break between your last image and the first image?

Your site still looks great! I guess I'm being really picky. Sorry! As I said, you can do with my two-cents as you will - throw it out the window or put it in a penny jar for later! =)

Yep, I tried that too. It looks funny though. I think I like to see
what's coming up in advance as opposed to one ad at a time coming
into view. I like your thinking though. Gimme more...gimme, gimme!

I've been looking into a scrolling marquee for my site and I came across this site which talks about continuous marquees. It's over my head but you could probably decipher it! Here's the site: http://javascript.about.com/library/b...

Hmmm... I've noticed that you've been having a lot of issues with your site not working or a code not working. This reminds me of when I had a lot of problems too about a month ago. People would post the codes and it wouldn't work for me. It turned out to be my computer. Somewhere along the way, I've deleted some files I thought weren't needed but in retrospect I did. Anyway... I got myself a brand-new computer and I no longer had any more problems. I'm not saying that you need a new computer but it is just a thought. I can imagine the frustration you must be feeling every time a code doesn't seem to work or you get error messages.

On what page are you trying to implement this code? Would you mind posting that page's url so I can take a look at why this isn't working for you?
