Hi Howard,

Once a domain is registered it is not possible to change the name. This is the nature of domains and is out of our control.

What you can do, is buy a new domain to use in conjunction with your original domain. This can increase traffic to your website and is also excellent for SEO.

Here's how to buy a new domain for your site:

Go to Site > Site Settings > Publishing > Get Custom Domain.
Select "Search for a custom domain", choose the new domain you would like to purchase, and click "Next".
Follow the steps to purchase your new domain and, once complete, your site will be published to your new domain.

I'm ok with registering and paying for a new site but is there any way of copying over what I've already got on my existing site ?

You don't need to Howard just publish the same to a different domain.

Maybe I'm being a bit slow here...............I want to keep the site as it is but change the name; I realise I have to register a new domain but is there a way I can have a new name and keep the same (in place) layout and historical data?

OK,

There are two significant places to change names associated with your site:

  • Domain name

  • Site Settings name This can be changed at Site>Site Settings (If you look at the top of this page you will see your site name with a pencil icon beside it. Click the pencil and you will be able to edit the site file name. This is independent of the domain name)

Yes. identical! It's the same site, just a different name or the same name and published to a different named domain. Is that clear Howard?

Absolutely nothing in the appearance of your site will change in the slightest.

Hi Howard,

Gop is correct, the steps I provided above will simply add your new domain to your existing website, nothing else will be changed. So sorry that I wasn't clear enough about that!
