Hi all, I've created a community test website where anyone can create, test
and do pretty much what they want with. Except delete it off course.

Use it to help others get code off, or to show off design tips.
You have carte blanche ! If you upload pictures to it - please create
your own folder in the file manager. There are no rules for now !
Lets create some guidelines for its use. Input appreciated.
It's everyone's site.

The site's name: http://ourtest.yolasite.com/
The Email Address is: yolasite@gmail.com (was lucky with that one)
The Yola Password is: yolasitepassword

You can even checkout it's mail at Gmail:
Username: yolasite@gmail.com
Password: yolasitepassword

I was a little bored! I hope you guys don't mind, but I did a little re-vamping in our site. I wanted it to look a bit more organized. I'm excited by how everyone is pitching in to make this site great!

One itty bitty question. Someone wrote "don't turn off the lights if someone is here" - Now, does that mean don't log off - just exit but don't actually log off?

I put that on Littleus because i'm not sure what the effect would be. Simply a cautious note. I think it could be a problem. If the user (any of us) logs out while another is there then presumably the site is shutdown???

The other really important aspect is updating while someone is writing code. That could break their page. I guess the only sure fire thing is to develop it on your own site and paste it onto this site.

If someone is doing something on the homepage and someone else on another page does an update, that could possibly break the site.

I think that if someone is on the homepage doing stuff then no-one else should be on. Thinking about this, makes me consider the possibility of yourself putting the index page as password protected for the sake of changing aspects of it without it being vulnerable to breakage??

Yes.. I understand the concern here and it's a very valid one. This is why I thought only one user at a time should be in the site. Hence, my images to demonstrate when the site is use and when it is not. Before a person can enter the site, they should actually look at the published site to see which "sign" is up. It would be the responsibility of the person who is actually in the site builder to display the appropriate image upon arrival and departure and update the site each time. Maybe we should reconsider this idea or something similar? I have since deleted the images as it seemed it was not needed. I can make new ones if this is something we will be pursuing.

Sorry littleus. I misunderstood. I agree with you. If there was only 1 at a time none of these issues would arise. just check the published site before going into the builder.

Okay.. last thing! LOL

Peter had commented that I'm the moderator. In actuality, I don't think there really is a moderator for this site. I think it's a combined group of people who are sorta take various roles and lead in this site. Ultimately, I guess the "head" moderator would be Boomer as he created this site, although it has not been clearly defined as such.

Perhaps this moderator business needs further attention as it may be useful to have a "go to" person.

I think your nominated and voted as curator LU. Congratulations and deep bows :) Not dumping at all. I think with 8500 people there's pretty well no question that some level of organisational responsibility needs to be in effect?

People... there has been much confusion in the site today with a couple of people signing into the site builder, especially in saving the pages. It is very important that only 1 PERSON is in the site builder at a time. Please use the images "yola test is in use" and "yola test site is available" to indicate if the site is open or not. You must be sure to update the site. Before entering the site, be sure to look at the published version first to find out its status.

Please also be sure to "clock in" before going into the site. This will indicate that someone is about to use the site. It is not necessary to "clock out" as using the image "yola test site is available" will indicate that the site is open again.

On the chat room, just put down the time you're logging in. This helps us to see if someone's in there.

I have an idea.We all who want to test anything can make our own sites there and password protect it(only if someone is concered about data loss.I would not recommend using passwords). Then we make changes to our sites there. Also we can post here if we want help with something. The person who can help will log in and open our site.He/She will make the changes and later tell us what changes were made.

I left a message on the chat box, but I'll leave the same message here as well:

Hey.. just wanted to let you guys know that I don't think I'll participate in this anymore. It's just too confusing and disorganized. Please feel free to delete any of my additions if it's not to your liking.

I wish you all luck with this and I do feel it's a wonderful idea.

I understand Mayank.. but it only works if all cooperate and follow the rules. Twice now I've lost my work. I believe this site has so much potential but it's not going to work if people don't follow the rules. Also, I think there are too many moderators. At last count, there were 3 moderators and I think I'm supposed to be one too. I think there should only be 1 moderator at this stage in the game to help lessen the disorganization and confusion.

Perhaps I am being too quick in giving up. I really dislike confusion - it makes my poor brain rattle! =P I need to sit on this a bit longer and think things through. I'm sure that I'm probably being too hasty.

I love the enthusiasm guys, but I think we have to many chiefs at the moment.

Remember that the site is more to help others get code off, and to show off
design tips. It's not about enforcing your own style or trying to be creative.
Practise on your own test sites and contribute on the test one!
Create your own page(s) and place it on the site. Keep the look and feel of the site the same all the way through. Somebody needs to be in charge of this too.

I believe there can only be one moderator and I think you suite the position
best Littleus. If you would reconcider.... pleeez!

Hey Boomer

I'm a sucker for guys from Africa! =) I don't mind being the moderator but only if others are in agreement. I do agree that for now.. only 1 moderator is needed. It just gets too hectic and confusing with so many people trying to oversee the site.

Thanks Littleus and Boomer,

Great to consolidate. Great that we've experienced a lot very quickly and that from this you have identified a good direction to follow.

I'm jumping up from the following posts. The guidelines are good, the answers are becoming clear.

I'm confident that this will work and can be reviewed as it evolves.

Cool....so by unanimous decision Littleus is the test site moderator.
Thank's to all the other applicants. Three is not fine, Dill and I've never heard of a SUB moderator Alex! Better luck next time guys.

Now... down to business. I think your artistic flair is needed across the site Lu.
A nice banner for all the pages, possibly a vertical menu for all the future pages. The top menu is going to become to clogged. It can just be normal text links (nothing fancy) that can easily be added to. What do you think boss?

1) Should there be a limit to the number of pages allowed per contributor ?

2) Is a contributor allowed to place his / her own ads on their pages?

3) If someone contributes, are they allowed a link back to their site?

4) Should they give credit to the original source, if any?

More to come....

I will answer your questions the best I can.The answers are:-

Ans 1. There need not be a limit to the no. of pages allowed/contributor.I mean let everyone make any no. of pages and name in this way:- If ABC is the contributor, then he will bname his pages ABC1, ABC2, ABC3...and so on.
There can be a limit to how many pages of a contributor will be displayed on the site.I mean suppose this limit is 2 pages, Then only 2 pages of ABC will be shown eithe in navigation or through a text link on some page(preferably homepage or a page related to topic).

Ans 2. As we know this is a test site.So I think ad is not needed. But I am undecided on this matter.Maybe they should be able to place ads which tells the user about their other sites.Maybe someone needs to experiment with ads.So I am undecided on this matter.

Ans 3. I think the contributor should be allowed to put a link back to their site But only on their pages. This way people who like their pages can see their other works.!

Ans 4. This should be the choice of the contributor whether to give credit to the original source or not.

Waitng for more to answer .....

Alex, Dill.. just because I'm the moderator, doesn't mean that I don't welcome your input and ideas. I'm still going to need help! I love how you guys came up the chat room and clock. Great stuff! So, please don't make yourself scarce at all. The site is only as great as it's people.

Boomer... whew.. you're off and running!! =)

~ I will try my best to make the site look nice in all pages. I'm not gonna make it look fancy schmancy though. I agree about the vertical menu and will implement a simple text menu.

~ As for the rest of your questions - I'm honestly clueless! I would appreciate other people's feedback on this.

Hmm.. thinking here:

For me, I guess I was visualizing that everyone would just contribute onto one page. I wasn't thinking of separating it (e.g. Boomer's Codes, Peter's Codes) I would just do what you did. Horizontal Menu, Fade-In Slideshow. As we get more codes, then we could group them into categories. Just thinking aloud here - maybe we could have a horizontal menu as well, where it could display test rooms. I've seen somewhere sorta like your HTML encoder thing, where people can paste in the code and see the results come up. Do you know what I'm talking about? Would this be of benefit?

I think it would be good to say who contributed it as we could ask that specific person any questions if any arose.

We could have a link page to people's sites if they wish to put it down

For me personally, I don't think ads are necessary at all. It just clutters up the space and the point of the site is not to make revenue but to be there as a helpful site.

Those are my few cents worth. I would love to hear other people's thoughts and ideas.

See how you put in your code then get a preview? It's a moot point now since we can't display codes.

Hi Littleus,

I've created a top and vertical menu which I believe has room for future growth.
If you don't like it or had something else in mind it's fine with me.

If you do, the colour scheme needs a woman's touch ;-)

I was just there on the published site! It looks fabulous! Have you ever come across something where you can put in a test code and it renders the result in a box below or pop-ups in a box? Much like your HTML encoder? I've seen it on some websites. I wonder if we could implement something like this on the test site? Do you think this would be useful? This way, a person does not necessarily have to go into the site to test the code.

Are you sure Littleus. I wouldn't be offended if you had something else in mind.
That's why it's on a test page. Did you try clicking on the link to create your own page? It's actually a lot clearer to see what's happening within the site builder when you see the widgets. It reduces the space to add content but leaves the navigation in place throughout the site.

I have looked briefly for tools that render the result on the same page.
It seems they all need access to a program running on a server. I don't know enough about this but will keep looking. I think it would be very useful.

Yes.. I did try clicking on the link to create your own page. You gave an excellent tutorial on this. I think it will be very useful to have. I'm still tinkering a bit with the new index page and have yet to decide where exactly I want the link. I may put it up on the horizontal nav bar. We'll see.

You can't click on a link from within the builder, which means the tutotial
needs some changing.

Oh yah! Good point! But, it would need to be accessible on the published version too. If we are ever able to find those test boxes, then no one will really need to go into the site builder!

Oh.... I see what you are meaning now about test boxes. duh!
That's easy to do, and with a "select all" button to grab the code.
Only problem is if you read the Dynamic Drive TOS. (It's not allowed)
You may use the code freely but you may not re-post it.

Boomer & littleus,

It really has improved markedly in the last few hours. Thanks both for all the great work.

Can I throw in an idea? I can see cons with it but maybe it would be OK?

For the enter/leave sign would you think that a toggle image would work., rather than going into the file manager?

Great idea Peter! Do you think you could set this up?

Or should we eliminate the images altogether and just type "Available" or "In Use". That might make it easier too.
