Hi all, I've created a community test website where anyone can create, test
and do pretty much what they want with. Except delete it off course.

Use it to help others get code off, or to show off design tips.
You have carte blanche ! If you upload pictures to it - please create
your own folder in the file manager. There are no rules for now !
Lets create some guidelines for its use. Input appreciated.
It's everyone's site.

The site's name: http://ourtest.yolasite.com/
The Email Address is: yolasite@gmail.com (was lucky with that one)
The Yola Password is: yolasitepassword

You can even checkout it's mail at Gmail:
Username: yolasite@gmail.com
Password: yolasitepassword

This recent scare has led me to some thoughts and I'm open to hearing your suggestions:

What if only Yola Champs are the only ones actually allowed in the yola test site itself.

But... for people who want to test the code and want help, they or we can create their own site under the yola test site. They can copy the code from the published version and insert into their test site.

For example, the menu-horizontal - you would have the example, then underneath it, you would post the code in text with description of how to implement it?

Let me create an example page to see if this would work. I'll get back to you guys. In the meantime, maybe we can think of other alternatives or placing some preventive measures to ensure that people cannot break the code.

@ Alex,
Sorry bud but maybe you missed one of the previous posts.
Littleus is the ONLY moderator of the site. She is the boss!
She has spent a lot of time in there today trying to set up the menu infrastructure of the site. Let's give her some space to get the basics set up (and backed up) before we all go bashing our way through. Your time will come to add "relevent" content to it. Be patient Ok. Thanks for understanding.

@ Littleus,
I think you have a very valid point there. Firstly there would have to be two seperate accounts though. One account could have the main test site and the other could have multiple users sites. If a user wants to add something to the main site, he must first demo the code on his own site, for main site consideration. Just thinking alload here! I'm sorry if it's had to come to this. Feel free to change the password for now.
I wouldn't want you to have to lose all your hard work!

@ Peter,
It wasn't you bud...it only happend now!

Hello Littleus and Boomer

I think that the homepage should only be worked on by lu or yourself or permitted by lu, both for organisational aspects and for the potential vulnerability of the site through the index.

I don't feel that this is a negative restriction at all. There's nothing on/in the index page that is integral to the function for ordinary users requiring an immediate change. I certainly don't mind asking or suggesting a feature to be added or reviewed and i'm happy to supply the code or whatever for those additions if agreed to.

Hey everyone!

Take a look at a page I just created. Look under "slideshows" and then click on "Advanced Gallery Script". What do you think of that kind of set-up? Does it work? Can a person just copy from the published site and then paste into their own?

Yeah I guess so, I love the layout of the page, very easy to use although I think that the code could be in a box so that it is easier to highlight and copy yeah as I said very simple but the code spread out may confuse new B coders.

I'm having a brain-fart moment. Lemme try to talk out what's going on in my head. I'll apologize in advance for my lack of articulation in my thoughts. Hopefully you guys can understand my mumbo jumbo, and give me your input and thoughts.

My thinking is to have two separate sites.

The original site which we have right now, I'm thinking that we could use that to display different things that people may be interested in using for their site. As an example, take a look at how I've set up the pages for the slideshows. Entry into this site would only be for the Yola Champs or by permission of the moderator(s). We could have a request page whereby if a person is interested in the Ultimate Fade-In slideshow, they would request for it there.

Then, this is where the second site would come in. This would be open access for everyone. We would then create a site for them on the public test site and place the code in there for them. If they need help tweaking the code, we can do it there. They can then copy the code and place on their own site.

So.. what are your thoughts?

I'm thinking if we do go ahead with this, then I'd like to change our site name to Yola Codes or something like that and use the Yola test site for the second site.

I'd also like to add a search bar function for the tip & tweaks page so that people can type in what they're looking for and it'll come up. How do we do that?

One more thing, is there a way to add a "next page" and "previous page" ? I was thinking once a person is on say the Ultimate Fade-in slideshow and want to see another type of slideshow, they can just hit the arrow on the bottom or a button that says "next page".

Hi Littleus,
For the back button use:

<a href = "javascript:history.back()"><b><< BACK</b></a>
or just plain,
<a href = "javascript:history.back()">BACK</a>

It's the same as hitting the back button on your browser.

The "next page" button will have to have the next page's URL I think.
The browser would not know that.

I have a nice un-branded search script for a site search.
Give me a minute.

So for the back button, do you need to have already been on the previous page for it to work? What about going forward to another page. Say I'm on Ultimate slideshow and then want to go to the next slideshow which happens to be Advanced Gallery script. How would that work?

Sorry Lu, I'm back now!
Are you wanting buttons (which would look cool) or just text links.

To answer your 1st question.......yes.
Second Question: To go to the "next" page, if you hadn't been there before, you would have to have the page's url. This would always be a predictable url, if you think about it.

For a text link, use the code I gave you above. (for the "back" link)
If you want a static button, I'll get the code for you.
If you want a mouseover button we could do that as well.

I think buttons would be cool. Could do either graphic buttons like arrows or button with text on it that says previous page & next page. I think I'm leaning towards arrows.

Also.. have you had a chance to think about my comments above regarding my "brain-fart" moment? =) I'm interested to hear people's thoughts - not about my brain-fart but the stuff afterwards! ;)

Here is also something to consider. I see it on a lot or these kind of sites.

It makes it easy to see where you are in the site's navigation.
It might not look that good under the drop-down menu though?

I'm thinking we'll stay away from that now. With the horizontal and vertical menu.. I think we have enough. I think the site is pretty straight-forward that most people should see where they are in the site's navigation.

I'm still getting to that brain-fart question Littleus, dammit!
I only got two hands you know!... Now I know why they invented left-handed mice ;-) And you thought men couldn't multi-task!

I've got about 100 tabs open, trying to create arrow (back and forward) buttons, find that "search box" code, thinking that "brain-fart" sounds a lot like that album David Gilmore once produced, (A momentary lapse of reason), if you didn't know, listening to the greatest rock band ever though my cheap flea market Jensen headphones, (the Steinhauser's got swiped), trying to answer Email's, worrying if Emmy's gonna miss her flight or not, and wondering if we gonna beat Clouda's "shout and share your site's" thread tonight.

This is really random, but If you ever meet Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and especially Neil Peart, throw your bra's, panties whatever, but get me an autograph, ok.

I'll be back....

LOL Boomer... you make me sound like I'm some matronly woman with a whip in my hand! =)

I can do the arrow thing! That's not a problem. For some reason I thought it was way more complicated... but it's not. It's very simple to do. So, if you wish, I can take that over but if you enjoy juggling all these things.. then by all means.. keep your balls in the air. =)

I just had an idea, why not put my community tutorial site on there as it can help the newbies? Have a look at my post and tell me what you think: http://getsatisfaction.com/yola/topic.... The site is called: www.Webtutorials.yolasite.com and can be edited on the test site user.

Hey littleus,

Here's the code for the Google / Site search box.
The site may need to be indexed by Google first before it works, which reminds me....webmaster code, meta tags, search engine submission etc.
I can do that tomorrow if you want?

<form method="get" action="http://www.google.com/search&quot;&gt;
<input type="text" name="q" size="31" maxlength="255" value="" />
<input type="submit" value="Google Search" />
<input type="radio" name="sitesearch" value="" /> The Web
<input type="radio" name="sitesearch" value="http://ourtest.yolasite.com/&quot; checked /> This Site<br />
</form>

Sure Boomer.. go ahead and do all of that webmaster, SEO stuff.

I'm new to this search function thing. I saw it on Papa's site and thought it was cool how it found all the things I put inside the search box. How does it work? Do I have to do something special to make sure that the search box can find the related topics?

How's this for an idea?

Those who have contributed their ideas and were used on the site, can have a link to their site?

Or.. is that narrowing it down too much? I just don't want it to become a big huge free-for-all.

Who made the textera box on the tips & tweaks page? I'm just wondering if you have a generator that made them so I don't have to keep copying and trying to figure out where to put the lt, &gt stuff.

Also... umm.. I'm reposting my above questions as I have yet to get any response. I'd really would like to hear from you.

If they need help tweaking the code, we can do it there. They can then copy the code and place on their own site.

Or, we could just keep everything on one site and have an honour system where no one can enter the Yola Test site except as granted by the moderator. However, they can create and access their own site on the Yola Test site login page.

Lastly, we could just keep it the same as we originally planned.

So.. what are your thoughts?

Well it having it has an honor system does seem like a good idea, what is your thought process behind this. I mean, how do you get permission from the moderator? Do you send them and email or something. This kinda strays from the original idea of having this site for everybody to use and enjoy and help/share their code. Just my thoughts though.

Hi lambofgod

A couple of days ago, we ran into a scare someone accidentally messed up the code. I am trying to think of ways of preventing this from happening. While, we definitely do want to have this site open and available for people to use, we also want to protect the integrity of the codes. Have you any further thoughts? If so, I'd appreciate hearing them.

You are going to have to take screenshots of the sites you want to create links from.
I use http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDeta... for taking and resizing them.
You are welcome to take whatever images and links you want from forsite to speed things up as well, Littleus. Does this answer your question ??
