I am gradually making SEO improvements but don't know which wording to put in the Header Tracking box or whereabouts it should go. I'm assuming it would be keywords and possibly description as well?

Hello Bern,

The Header Code field in the Site Tracking area is to be used for any meta tags that are not keywords, description or Google Webmaster tags. There are other services on the internet that may ask you to verify your site with them through meta tags and this is where you can place those tags.

For example, it is possible to verify your domain on Pinterest.  You would generate a meta tag in your Pinterest account, and then copy and paste it into the Header Code field.

You don't want to enter keywords or descriptions there.  These would show up as text on your page, and can have a negative impact on your SEO.

I hope this information is helpful to you.  If you have any further questions, or need help adding a specific meta tag, please let us know.

Thank you. Am I to believe that the only place I can get an H1 font is on each page heading? I'm confused and seem to be going round in circles making changes, scanning for SEO, and not making great progress. Is the perfect answer to give each page the name of a keyword phrase?

Hi Bern,

First, let me advise that there is no "perfect answer" when it comes to SEO.  It's a series of tips, tricks, and best practices to optimize your site, but there are many variables and there isn't really a one-size-fits-all solution.  Your goal should be to create an informative, attractive site for your visitors, with relevant content and calls to action that give them the information they need about your business.

That being said, optimizing your site for search is very important so that these visitors can find it!

Your page heading is your H1 tag, and adding your keywords as your page heading is a great way for search engines to classify your site.  That being said, a keyword doesn't always fit as a page heading, so you can also use the H2 tag to highlight these phrases instead of or as well as your H1 tag.  Any text that you format using the Second Header will be tagged as H2.  H1 and H2 tags have similar importance in search engine rankings.  The Third Header is H3, and so on.

To apply these headings to your site text:
  1. Click inside the Text widget containing the text you want to change.
  2. Highlight the text you want to change.
  3. The Text Editing Toolbar will display across the top of your page.
  4. Click the dropdown arrow next to Paragraph.
  5. Select a Heading for your text.
  6. Save your changes and publish to see the changes online.
Once you have your keywords determined, the next thing you want to do is repeat them as often as you can naturally.  This provides consistency so when a search engine spiders a page, the same content is repeated to indicate that this is the page subject matter.

So the keywords you use in your page headings should be repeated in your page titles, in your description, in your text, and in your alt tags.

Here are a few strategies to use:
  1. Only focus on one or two keywords on each page of your website.
  2. Write keyword rich title, description, and keywords tags for each page of your site. In your Sitebuilder, if you click on Page > Page Properties > Metadata, you will find fields to add unique tags to each page of your site.
  3. Write good content and make sure the keyword/s are in the visible text on the page. Don't stuff the keywords into the page, blend them in so your page reads comfortably.
  4. If your business is local to a geographic area, make sure to mention your location in various places throughout your website.
Then, you want to make sure that the keywords you have added to your pages are the keywords that you enter into Traffic Builder, so you can track the current traffic volume for each of your keywords, letting you know which terms are being search for frequently and which ones are hardly used.

To access the Traffic Builder:
  1. Log in to your Yola account.
  2. Hover your mouse over the Site Traffic tab.
  3. Select Traffic Builder from the drop-down menu.
  4. Click the Enter Keywords button.
  5. Enter your business name, city and keywords/phrases in the fields provided.
  6. Be sure to use one keyword/phrase per field.

To learn more about creating a successful SEO campaign using the tools provided by Yola Gold take a look a this tutorial: Traffic Builder FAQ.

As always, there is never any guarantee that a website will list for specific keyword searches; but these suggestions will give you a place to start.

Thank you very much. I clearly need to be organised in this and think it through carefully. One thing that really bugs me is this: how can we know which keywords are popular when google insists on *hiding* the search phrase 'to protect the customers privacy'?

Hi Bern,

It is the goal of many webmasters to get listed for various keyword searches. Before you decide on specific keywords you would like your website to list for, make sure you take into consideration what the competition is, as well as how much work you are able to do to make it happen.

There are millions of websites on the Internet which makes some keyword phrases more competitive than others. There is a huge amount of competition for the keyword "cars", whereas the keyword phrase "used Saturn car sales Austin Texas" carries far less competition. Many companies will enlist the services of specialists to help them in the pursuit of more competitive keywords and search engine optimization in general.

One thing you can do is use a free keyword research tool such as Keyword Tool. Enter your keyword into the search box and hit your enter key. You will see a number of keyword phrase ideas which include your main keyword. You can build your page's metadata based on these suggestions and what you feel your customers are searching for.

I hope together with Jen's advice this will help you get started, Bern!
