Oops... my bad.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but...

WMT tells me I have a few bad (404) links on my site.
They are typo's which I have made myself. eg. morganbay.php instead of morgansbay.php and in one case I have used two dot's as in h ttp://blah..php

I need to fix these but I don't know where to find the pages I have made the typo's on.
I have many internal links within my own site, pointing to my own pages.

I've done a Google search and run my site through a few online tools for identifying bad links and they all find the dead links but don't tell me the source page of the link.

Without scrutinizing 170 odd pages, does anyone know of a shortcut to identifying the offending page(s) by doing a site wide search.

Aha that is it... You need to right click on the broken link in the report and click "Properties" and it will show you the pages the link is on in the bottom box...

So it tells you the incorrect link but not the page its on?

I once looked for a tool that found bad links but i never found 1 i hope someone knows of 1 i'll use it myself.

If no one does then the method you could use is to view the source of every page and using Ctrl and f search the source code for the typo.

It would mean going to all the pages 1 by 1 but better than nothing.

What a great tool - thanks so much Ed.

Boomer it works spot on... You just right click the bad link error and in properties is the pages the error is on.
Also Ctrl and B removes all the good links from the list, which helps.

Budding webmaster?... This tool comes highly recommended.
It weeded out all my bad links.

Thanks a lot for this one Ed. What a great find!

I'm actually pretty chuffed with myself as well :-)
Here's what it found:

- 1207 URL's - 23 errors found (took 15min to Analyse)
- 12 were expected.... (pages I know about that I still need to create)
- 7 are forbidden links... (Wikipedia links - where Wikipedia blocks the tool)
- 1 No such host... (which is incorrect because the host does exist - tool error)
- 3 are real link errors... My typing errors.

Pretty good overall.... 3 real errors out of 1207 Thats about 0,0025% ....
Almost what I got for History in High School ;-)

Hey Booms,

Unless I'm not understanding what you want to do, I think GW does show things like this.

_____________________________________________________________

In the last screenshot it tells me the url that is returning the 404 Page, the pages that are linking to it, and when it was detected. Is this not what you want?

Connor - what your missing is that google will only show you what it has indexed and from that indexed content what links it trys to follow.

If its not indexed it wont show up - the program Ed gives is a much more comprehensive tool.

You are so right Connor - if it were a snake it would if bit me...
I think I was just too tired last night to see it.

I normally do far more research before posting here, but I'm glad I did else I would never have known about Ed's wonderfull tool. It is a great tool though, because it shows a lot more detail and seems to be more thorough than WMT.
You should try it out, you won't be sorry.

Thanks for pointing it out.

P.S. Maybe WMT added that after they saw this post... Just kidding ;-)

But, as Lee says... Google will only show you what has been indexed.
So you should still use Ed's tool.
