If a book on browser languages (html, css, php, coldfusion, others) was written and explained in full detail. Would it sell? If so, what's a good price? Figure 200 to 450 pages, softcover, manufacturing cost about $7.50 plus publisher's royalty share is 20%. And about 6 to 18 months to write, research, and illustrate.

I think it could run to a few more pages than you think, I would have a look in book shops for comparison books and note their price range.

well... I figured (estimated) about 200 to 450 pages. With my publishing company, they would charge approximately $7.50 for black and white and softcover book (for manufacturing) plus, they get 20% of royalties. So if I sold the book for $25.00 (royalties of $17.50) they would get $3.50 royalties from each book and I would get $14.00.

I'm not an expert at html, but I can be pretty good with research if I put my mind to it. Plus I know a lot of people good with different computer languages. I'm also considering changing my education to web design... Then the book will be self-knowledge (you don't have to source what you learn in school unless you quote something directly from a book.

I would love to be a featured book author (number 1 seller, best seller, etc.) that would be cool! :)

Hi Donald, this indeed is a HUGE project but in this day and age I think its a subject many of us would like to learn about as technology increases we need to keep up with it, my advice is wait till you write it then think about costs etc, it will take u a long time to do this so good luck mate...

yea, the thing is. I didn't want to spend 6 to 18 months (or longer) on a project unless it was worth it. So I was trying to figure my profits for each book and estimating how many I think I might be able to sell a month before I started writing and researching it. The thing is, one of the most widely shared information on the net (for free) is stuff about creating websites and stuff.

Lulu takes 20% royalties don't they? - in addition to the manufacturing costs.

The problem with publishing a big book with them is converting to PDF. When I wrote my 38 page kids book and converted it to pdf. The last line of every page was on the first line of every page in the pdf. I had to go back to my Word and delete a space on every page then do it again to get it right. A big book would be a potential problem. When you published your books with lulu, how did you convert to pdf? Did you have any problems?

yea. Well... if you know about writing a professional book with lots of professional information that has to be ACCURATE then you'll probably know that there's a lot of verifications and notes, brainstorms, spider webs, and others to be performed first. It'll probably be two weeks to two months before I even start the book. :) And because of my website, I probably won't work on the book more than two hours a day as my website is already published and I want to make sure that stays up and running.

Is there any other ideas for books you might have? I like to write books that teach people things. For example, my in progress martial arts book, my currently published child's book, etc. Remember, my skills with MS Word, MS Office, MS Access, and MS PowerPoint are phenomenal. Remember your school books? I can design and write a book to look exactly as a text book does. I'm thinking of making my next book in the format of a text book (margins with definitions or other stuff, pictures overlapping the margin and main body, questions, answers, glossary, index, table of contents [I know how to make this generate automatically in MS Word]) and many more possibilities

Donald.

If you get it written and published, it's a great feeling. As a semi-pro photographer I get a buzz every time I see a book with my work in it on sale or on a shelf. Count me in for a copy.
