How much "content area" you have in the main section of your page is a function of the template style that you're using.
You are only able to edit / add content to that area, as you've already noticed. What I would suggest is that you use a top navigation menu template style (as opposed to side navigation menu), which generally allows website creators the most room to add content to their page.
When you're in your site builder account, click on the Change Style tab in the upper menu area, and then sample a few to see how your website content is displayed. (don't worry: you can always go back to the original you started with, and you won't lose any work, if the changes are not to your liking....)
