SAVE YOUR SITE, SAVE YOUR SITE... IF YOU DON'T YOU WILL REGRET IT

Just passing along a good idea that I am sure many don't use or do to protect their site.

I use the built in Download Site feature in Synthasite as well as religiously when I view each individual page in my Firefox browser I click "File" then "Save page as" then in the Save as box I select "Web page, complete" name the file with the name of the page you are viewing as well as the date.

index09/06/08
gallery09/06/08

you get the idea...

Then click "Save"

Today I had opened and added one image to my index page and updated my site only to find out that 50% of all the text had disappeared from that page. (and no I did not delete them myself) ;)))

Had I not created those backups and they been readily available I would never have had my site returned to normal in 3 minutes. It would have taken hours and hours and the most important page in my site would have been down all the while.

From my saved backups it was a simple cut and paste of this missing text and at the end I was happy and smiling and not miserably sad and throwing the computer out the window... Just kidding

I have an idea which would be a perfect addition to Synthasite. On each widget have a "Lock Widget" box or button thereby creating a safety and ensure that the user must unclick this box in order to delete the individual widget.

Also, a "Back in time" button where the user could if need be return to a state some 10 minutes before the issue took place would be nice too (have a type in the word you see box to ensure it's not accidentally used)

Excellent post! Saving and creating back up pages is a great idea. It can certainly save a great deal of trouble.

I like your ideas of being able to lock widgets and revert to earlier versions. I will ask our developers to consider these options to help make your work more secure.
