Seeing More of an RSS Feed

Thanks for all the great advice and I apologize for a redundant question. I am adding RSS feeds to my Synthasite and using the RSS reader Widget. I am not sure if it's the RSS or the Widget, but I am only able to see about half of the headline of any given RSS feed (e.g. Huffington Post). That makes it hard for me to know whether an article is worth clicking on. Is there a way to widen a widget/RSS feed to allow for the entire title to be read? Thanks!

Shaquille, Thanks for your answer but I am not sure if I understand what you are saying. I am trying to have a page on my site ( a personal site where I am storing all the sites that I visit everyday) that has RSS feeds from all of my favorite news sources. When I try to do this the RSS feeds do not appear wide enough to show all of the headlines. I want to widen the RSS feed and/or the column to make this possible. Thanks, Andrew

Hi Andrew,

There are a few free RSS Feed widgets you can use - like grazr.com (http://grazr.com/) or feedostyle.com (http://www.feedostyle.com/).

Once you've customized the widget and copied the HTML embed code, you can add it to your site by following these steps:
1. Drag and drop an HTML widget onto the page
2. Paste the code into the HTML editor that opens (right-click > paste or Ctrl-V)
3. Click on ok

Let us know if you need any other information.

Marije,
It appears that I am struggling to understand less about Synthasite and more about RSS readers and widgets. I essentially am making a personal webpage that contains all of my favorite links and websites (Iike a 1-stop personal site). I want to have 2 RSS readers. One for news updates and one for technology updates (like Synthasite and Get satisfaction). So, how do I figure out which widget is best to get multiple RSS feeds without having a separate RSS feeder for each RSS source/subscription? Thanks, Andrew

Hello Andrew,

You can add as many news feeds to your reader as you like. You mention your need for two RSS readers. I would probably go for two different "brands" of readers then, to prevent any crossover of your RSS feed selections.

After installing the reader you then go to the feed that interests you and copy the link of their feed, then paste the link into your reader. That's it. The feeds will come down automatically.

For your specific requirement you simply paste the general news feeds into reader 1 and the technology feeds into reader 2.

Andrew there are other options for separating groups of feeds in one reader also. You may be interested?

Good luck.

I think I would be very interested in having one reader with different groups. My goal is to organize the dozen or so news/politics and technology sites/blogs that I read everyday into one convenient place. Do you have a favorite RSS reader? And, a RSS reader in this instance is an RSS reader Widget right? I am not just using a reader but rather a reader widget right? Thanks Peter and everyone else !

OK Andrew,

The solution is easy. It's all provided in Google's reader and it's a Google widget they call a "gadget".

1. To get the widget: http://www.gmodules.com/ig/creator?ur...
2. Customise the widget to your liking (Colour, size etc)
3. Change the "Feed URL" box to a feed you want
4. Click "get the Code" at the bottom of this form
5. Copy the code (Ctrl+C) or Right click the mouse and select Copy.
6. Drag an HTML place holder from the side-bar of your page creator to where you want your reader.
7. Paste the HTML code into the placeholder. Either Ctrl+V or Right click your mouse and Paste

Save and you've installed the reader. Update your site.

To add news feeds you do not have to go to the page editor you can do it from your viewing page,

Now locate your news feeds one by one. The feed address is copied by Left clicking the RSS sign shown for each feed. Then go into the Reader and at the upper Left Hand corner you will see a button with "Add a subscription". Click this button then Ctrl+V or Right click your mouse and Paste the copied URL into the opened box. Repeat this for all your news feeds.

After adding your feeds then you can do all amazing things described in the Google reader Help section.

I hope this sorts you out OK and am happy to clarify things if needed.

Andrew,

just to clarify reader and reader widget.

widget is a generic term for a pre-packaged installer for various code based thingy's. The synonyms are gadgets, plug-ins and others.

Peter,
What's the "Feed URL"?

Hi Andrew,

Apologies for not clarifying that. Technically it's the URL or an internet address of the computer port that is sending out the RSS information called "the feed". So every RSS advertisement that you see like for Google or CNN or BBC or here on GS:Synthasite in the bottom RH corner of this page has a specific internet address which in effect is your access address to that source or feed of their information. RSS is short for "Really Simple Syndication" :) and that is simply an internet protocol that is used by this type of "feed" I guess it's like the POP protocol "Post Office Protocol" used by many email programs.

The specific example of GetSatisfaction: synthasite feed (this forum is on a feed) is http://getsatisfaction.com/SynthaSite...

If you Left click the address it displays an almost unreadable list of information. The RSS reader reorganises that information into a formatted output which we can read. What you do to get this is Copy & Pate this address into the URL address box or bar of your RSS reader.

For the sake of installing this reader as described I would copy and paste the URL for GS:Synthasite as I have mentioned.

I hope this allows you to at least an overview of these terms and specifically for this initial installation an address that will start you on your way.
