Hi Paddy,

Because Royal Mail do not have an electronic interface for calculating postage for e-com stores this has to be input manually.

You need to create a Shipping Method (eg name: UK Post) with Zones, ie Post codes. and into each of these Post Code zones you have to create a list of postage charges. Now comes the second issue. Royal Mail doesn't charge by weight alone but also by volume. So you really need to know the volume of the parcel plus it's weight and create a table with these variables for each post code. The weights and volumes would be matched to the parcels that you are posting. Along with each of these goes the postage charge.

Most people in the UK with online stores charge flat rates for postage because of this reason. It looks bad so what they do is to place a surcharge on the item and then itemise a low price per postage. This means that you do not have to go through the work of creating the postage tables.

Once you post out of the UK then you can use air mail which allows for automatic electronic postage calculation and although there is a difference in price between the auto and the not it's not so great in percentage terms.

Paddy,

because the Royal Mail postage pricing is so complex, then I would simply state a fixed pride shipping/postage for within the UK. Offer 2nd Class Postage. State your postage fee and then you can work out a schedule. If you offer first class it will literally take you days to construct the schedule.

How much does it cost to London? and how much does it cost to Belfast and Glasgow. and the other countries capital city. Estimate the number of shipments you feel you will make to each of these places. Then you will get an idea of how much YOU will pay for postage and therefore how much you can charge to cover your post fees on average. You will need a postage schedule from Royal mail where you will post from and look up the charges on this. I think you can see this online somewhere?

Overseas I would pick a carrier that has an online shipping calculator and use their shipping prices in real time. it really is the easiest but you have to decide specifics before I can offer assistance because we need the data before we can do that.
