Should Meta Description be Left Blank on Blog Page?

Hi All!
We have a cooking recipe site on a blog page and am wondering if it is better to leave the meta description blank in the properties side bar. When Google indexes each recipe I end up with the same description for each recipe and get a duplicate description error in webmaster. I guess my question is will leaving the meta tag blank allow google to crawl further into the recipe to get their own snippet or will I be penalized for this in terms of SEO.

This is wonderful! I too have just realized that each of my blog entries while pertaining to different subjects, all have the same meta description.

If there is a way to alter the meta information for individual blog posts, it would be an absolute blessing!!!

Anxiously awaiting the SEO expert's reply....

Hello,
Unfortunately there is not a way to give each individual blog post a unique meta description tag at this time. The title of each individual blog post will become the meta title tag, but whatever the description on the main blog page is will become the default meta description tag of each post.

If you are concerned with optimizing your blog posts for search, many of the same SEO principles that apply to a webpage also apply to a blog post. Please take a look at this tutorial where you will find lots of information on optimizing website content: Building Your Site With SEO in Mind.

This is something I will put forth to our team as a feature request because it would a good to be able to add individual descriptions to blog posts. I'm sorry I don't have a better solution for this right now but hope you will be able to use the suggestions in the tutorial.

Hope this helps!

Kind Regards,
Emmy

Has there been any update to this issue of repeat meta descriptions to blog pages as I'm being told by google that I have a tonne of them. 492 in fact. Should I just clear it out of any description?

Hello Will

With the Yola Blog there is unfortunately no safe way to avoid duplicate data. It's a known problem and one of the reasons why we discontinued this feature. I'm sorry I don't have better news for you on this matter right now.

Discontinued? When did that happen? So I'm stuck with 492 errors and I can't do anything about it?

We discontinued the Blog Widget about one year ago. Existing users like you can still edit their blog posts. I can't think of a much better idea than the one you suggested above, so it's up to you to edit anything on your blog you can to try and solve this issue. I'm sorry I can't assist you much better with this.
