There have been questions in the past about adding Site Membership to a site, and it seems agreed that external apps are the only way.
But can someone explain (in simple terms) the pros and cons (and ifs) of using the Password Protection that Yola provides to achieve this? I'm guessing it won't be as secure as some others but may be sufficient for some.

Different purpose Philip.

Password protection is quite insecure. It means that anyone who gets access to the password is in. It is convenient for people with membership and limited access, maybe a specific page of detail. It's like rooms within a club.

Site Membership is usually secure as people don't like sharing their own login details as they realise that others can change their (the registrant's details) personal details. It's generally the front door to the club.

Things like Friend Connect are insecure. They only allow a voice within the club, but they don't have to sign into the club specifically each time..
