I'm having a site ripper come from
75.104.192.38
Beckville, Texas, United States
Wildblue Communications,
Browser: Rippers.

It seems to have only hit my synthesite webpage and not my domain. (www.honeybearplayhomes.com)

Any input would be greatly appreciated. How bad of a thing is this to happen?

the pages the looked at were...

What is a site ripper? Your site was hacked? I noticed something at the bottom that looked messed up, yellow words, red background, all funky looking

I looked up site rippers on a search...Not very nice things. I see the possibility that a site ripper could really mess up several things Also it appears to be something that would infinge on copyrights Bigtime. And these things are permitted? What kind of protection is there? The whole world is going crazy and evil

I've been searching and this is a good explantion of site rippers. "There are many dishonest webmasters that download the entire sites of their successful competitors, just change some images and texts and have "their" site up and running in less than a day without any effort " However, it looks like any preventative measures will cost you money. If your site has already been ripped "stolen" you have an uphill battle getting it removed if it has been duplicated elsewhere on the interenet.

aha I think I figured it out...

They must look through craigslist and use the results it finds there. I just the day before changed my Domain Name Forward feature from Masked Forward to Open Forward and it was only after I did that did the little turd do his dirty deed. So I hope this is a quick fix for others to think of so they can't find their Synthesite pages because they are hidden from view. For me its too late unless I can somehow block their ISP... Any help there???

So is there a more simple or easy way to prevent site rippers? There are loads of sites out there PROMOTING site ripping methods and software. Yet I find little information on how to prevent ripping in the first place. This is a serious concern I have.

Monique.Ok, I understand. I've been researching and all I can find are a few places that sell some encryption software. Which does me little good because I'm not sure I'd understand how to use it. Even if I did understand it, I think it may block the search engine crawlers....so that would destroy getting placement. Also some of what I am finding is that there are also AD disabling hackers out there too. This would crash adsense, amazon, or other ads on sites. Dang...so much for thinking I could ever try and start to make a little income off the interent. Every time I turn around another issue that'll need addressing. Not even getting content put in lately on my pages. There has to be protection out there. Probably at a high price though.

in my case unless they can build a playhome and then sell it they can't do diddly with whatever they copied from my site. So unless they can add some buy now feature which is totally unlikely because my playhomes cost thousands and tens of thousands of dollars... Nobody would buy without seeing firsthand so I guess I'm just pissed more than anything. Also, do check into the domain forwarding I wrote of above. It didn't happen until I changed my Domain Name Forward feature from Masked Forward to Open Forward. Maybe this had something to do with it.

This site is free and let me know I had been attacked... Check it out... another freebie tossed your way guys.

mredsayhi. Right, with what your site consists of which is basically local marketing, there isn't much damage they can do to you. Heck it might even be an advertising bonus. However with my approach (making money off online advertising programs) I see my sites as being very vulnerable! Thanks for the above link though. I will certainly look into it!

heres a thought for you why not simply create new pages with your wares and simply do not show those pages in the menu or list (easy to do) then find a Bot unfriendly code accessed link to the new page with your stuff. (you know the box with the picture of all messed up writing and you have to type exactly as they have shown) pretty sure they cant access a page unless it's actually a person behind the attack.

Maybe Monique can help you with this idea

Hi mredsayshi, Thrundar and everyone else

I have made inquiries and I am afraid there is not much more I can tell you. Since a website is a publicly available resource there is nothing you can do from a technical side to prevent people from ripping it. This was the question I needed to ask before responding and the answer is pretty much as I thought:

Your only recourse in this case is legal, I am afraid. If someone ripped your site and then tried to pass it off as their own this would be a copyright infringement and you would be entitled to take legal action against them.

I suppose as a website publisher you are in the same position as anyone who publishes material, either in print or electronic form. You are protected by law from someone stealing your intellectual property. If a theft of this nature does occur then you need to appeal to this law for restitution.

I found this site last night. http://www.aerotags.com/products/tlp.php I have no idea if this works. There is a fee. Plus it may interfere with search engines. I was trying to find a way to prevent ripping before it happened. I know stock photo companies protect their images (water mark?) I've also been to sites where the source code can not be viewed. Right click disabled.

I found this thread because our site was also visited by someone from Wildblue Communications (IP addy 75.104.96.59) and the browser is also identified as Rippers 0. I am blocking the entire IP range of Wildblue Communications - 75.104.0.0 - 75.107.255.255.

It doesn't mean that Wildblue is defrauding anyone. Wildblue is the Internet provider. SQ is referring to a person who uses Wildblue as their Internet provider, as well.

Wild Blue has a customer service center and upon my sending them several emails containing the IP's of the attacks I had been getting from one of their users within one week I saw no further ripping. Wild Blue is simply a means by which people who are out of reach of standard web access can use the web by means of satellite. They are a decent company I have found and did me a solid by halting the attack on my site.

I've been using this for some time now and although it only allows the last 200 to show up in the results... for a free service I have found it to be most informative and very good at telling me what I need to change on my site to make those who look at it stay longer then a few minutes.

The average time spent on my site per person in the beginning was mere minutes whereas now it's about 20 to 30 minutes and in some cases much longer. Not to mention I can track those who came to my site via the "send to a friend" feature because they come in from an email account and with this service you can tell the difference.

hello everyone new here obviously but I've been reading up on most of this threads... especially on this one as I hope it got resolved.

Realize that if you right click on a page and click "view page source" it'll give you all the info you placed on your site or most of it at least. For testing purpose and I already deleted it [didn't even save it] I used that page source to see if I could reproduce the given result of the ripped copy as you indicated on that 2nd website. It seems almost exact except obviously the template I choose to test from is wrong lol. But yea given that source and a little knowing what template you used and so forth makes it easy to make the same site. That's as far as I know. Again I only did that for testing purposes and not to rip you off. Test site was never saved so please don't take me the wrong way here and of course deleted. << sorry had to state cause I would never rip another off just tried to reproduce the result and report it if I could do it thus given you guys another suggestion of how it could have been done.

What you just did to my copyrighted site and trademarked artwork regardless of your intent and or saving then deleting constitutes copyright infringement and I would be most cautious in your further attempts. As this forum is not for giving ideas to others so that they can themselves go out and do the same and break the law as you yourself have done. Your IP has been retained and will if need be given to the proper authorities.

You are hereby asked to refrain from further attempts to copy my site either as a test or otherwise.

This matter is not concluded.

And yes I know several copyright and trademark attorneys who would enjoy a little side work.

Ed,

Sorry about that like I stated it's not my intent to compromise your site. if you have my IP that's fine by me I dont have anything to hide. Plus I have no intention of using your site for mine as those people who rip off or have ripped your site have done. I have read and seen how much you put into it like the rest of us have been doing or trying to achieve. I never have ripped anyone off ever nor will start now as it's not my place to do so. I'm just here like everyone else helping out in my little knowledge. and if you didn't know of that page source that anyone could do it or see it then by all means now you do know as I don't see anyone who has stated that yet so I decided to mention it. If need be please erase and edit this reply or even delete it as well if you still believe that suggestion of "maybe" how they did it and how it's easily access by the millions fails to advice you or suggest to you what they could have done and maybe it's a flaw that can be patched somehow someway. You can even have the admins here look into my account and they'll tell you that nothing I have done pertains to your site or even would. Please realize I'm not trying to look like the bad guy here. Just trying to help but if that is so then well so be it I have nothing but 1 unfinished site and another starting for a game clan.

I guess a first post to help is not worth it like this so I'll keep it at that.
Again you can report me to authorities or have the admins look into my account with them and let them tell you what I have whichever suits the above needs.

pce!

I did know of the ease at which it takes to copy someones site as it is done thousands of times daily and I did know of the manner in which you spoke of. However, I chose not to state it openly and now by your posting of something which is not pertinent to this actual post and offers no way to help the collective but in fact shows a way to they themselves do as you have and who's to say copy a site from a BIG BOY company and then get sued and you are at fault for disclosing the ease at which you had done it yourself.

This, I have issue with and as to the deletion of this thread I started some time ago and through my own dealings with it had offered up help to others to solve it if they had it become an issue in the future. I would rather only the posts after yours be deleted if that is at all possible Monique.

As to the reporting to any authorities it is at my discretion and as you have appeared to be repentant I would still caution you in this matter for your future in website building.

And as to how they did it... The manner in which you described is in fact NOT how they did it. The website rippers do things quite differently.

Woooa! What the .......? This is scary stuff, bra. I have the same feelings about the news idiots who report on how easy it is for terrorists to get at something... Why not mail them blueprints and a key. That's about what this guy just did. (and I think I've made my feelings on copyright issues very clear in past posts) That's it... my site's not going out alone after dark anymore!

If I appear distressed, upset and mad I have every right to be...

In all my postings I have tried to be of benefit to others and not offer ways to break the law as I was not only a US Marine but had been in law enforcement as well as government service as well. I take a moment and think about my post before I send it and even if I have written a long message and come to a part which can be used against another, find a site that I was going to share to be out of taste for one reason or another be offensive to even one person I delete my entire message and do not send it.

Ask Monique as to my ethical background in trying to protect the collective as well as the company. I have myself refrained from posting tips, tricks or other to ensure they are not used or misused by anyone who may read the post that I placed it in.

I understand that yes you may have wished to help and maybe you did but in this case I feel the message you sent was quite different then what you had intended.

I will consider this to be closed as I have more pressing matters to attend.

Copyright infringement is serious legal issue. Any published document, regardless of the medium (print, audio, video, webpage) is vulnerable to copying. Unfortunately this is the nature of a public document. I very much doubt that roleteje had any ill intent, but I do think it is a good idea to confine the discussion to strategies for dealing with copyright infringement rather than descriptions of how the copying could be achieved ;-)
