Site won't appear in any search results unless use full URL

Hi. I have a problem with searches for my site.
If I search for some key words on my site (www.openformula.co.uk) my website does not appear in the results - at any ranking. It just doesn't appear. If I search for the full web name as above then I do get some results. For example, I am based in Burton on Trent and my windows title contains "Excel Training | Excel Developer | Web Design" with "Burton on Trent" in the Keywords section. So I search "Excel Training Burton On Trent" and my website does not appear anywhere. Even if I add "Open Formula" into the search text!
Now I have set this site up at the same time roughly and in the same way as my wife's site (www.elitepethomecare.co.uk) and this appears right up in the search results when I search!.
I get the same issue searching using Bing or Google. I have successfully verified my site and also successfully set up Analytics.

Sp now I am at a loss as to why I cannot find my site. The only difference between my site and my wife's is that hers is Silver and mine is Bronze.
Any help would be gratefully received!
Thanks
Philip

Hi,

This may be due to the fact that Google haven't indexed it with your keywords (this will happen more and more) or it may not have entered into the SERPS as yet.

The window titles you mention are in effect keywords of your content. They were added by yourself of course. What Google are now focusing on is objectivity since their spiders and robots can "understand" the content of websites in a flash and they now are moving into classifying content objectively rather than blindly using promoted words.

Your topic is also in an extremely competitive field and it may be the best of the lot but this is determined by Google based on quality and novelty. One of the indices of this is popularity. Popularity of the topic and the interest that viewers have on your site. Breaking through is the first step and Google have implied that the longhaul is based on the reception by viewers. Of course they are not telling the formula just the very broad outline and they have said that the traditional aspects of Search Engine Optimisation are being downgraded to make the promotion more equitable.

What do you have to do? The most common answer is keep adding new quality information to your site and just wait it out.

Why is your wife's site discoverable? I really don't know the answer to that and probably few can tell you why.

SERPS= Search Engine Results Page(s)

thanks for the reply and I really get the bits about improving ranking etc and that I am in a competitive field but the site is not appearing in the search results AT ALL which is my concern!

It appears in the results of some business pages I subscribe to but not on it's own. The fact it does not appear on Bing either (not even on the last page of search results) leads me to believe it is a different issue with the site, maybe technical?
Thanks again

I Googled:
"excel and VB business solutions in the UK using an open formula" Top 2 positions.

Thanks for that - I do get the same result However, I am based in Burton on Trent which is where by client base will be and if I add "Burton on Trent" to the search text you quoted my site no longer appears!

I do have Burton on Trent in the Keywords section but not on the home page. I would have thought that it would have picked up the location from the Keywords. I have just added "burton on trent" to the home page and republished but still no joy :-(
Any ideas?

That won't be seen until the next crawl of your site.

You may also like to add business places which is a Google facility also. I don't know the address but easily found.

Thanks - I have added Google places - just waiting for the card to come. Would the fact I am only Bronze make a difference? My wife is Silver and works well

No. Silver offers great extra facilities but doesn't change the way your site content is presented to the search engines.

You have the top 2 positions in 3,000,000 matches. Not much better than that :)

Keywords don't hold much weight as I have mentioned. It's the content that is used for indexing your site.

Thanks for the help. I am adding locations / local cities to my home page now so that will help when next crawled. In fact that is the main difference between our sites. I do understand what you are saying about coming top but that is only when quoting specific sentences from my site. People searching will generally just quote their local region and the specific topic and doing that doesnt return results.

But thanks - I will come back if adding the localities doen't help after the next crawl

Cheers
