Sluggish and Crashes

Ok, I know we had recent trouble with the server and maybe my site is getting to "fat" (if there is such a thing). When I go to my site it loads slowly and crashes frequently. The crashes are usually on pages with animations. Anyone know if this is a temporary problem or do I need to split my site into multiple sites to make for less content in each? The url is:

Hi 1331

The recent trouble is a thing of the past and in no way related to your current experience.

Just to confirm: are you getting these crashes on your published site, or when you try to edit it?

I am going to check your site now and see how it loads for me. Will get back to you shortly.

Everything seems to work fine in edit and even in preview. It is when I "visit" the published site.

The crashes have not happened the last few times but it still loads very slowly and it seems to slow down more as I progress through the links.

I have spent a few minutes on your site, rapidly navigating between pages via your image links, paying careful attention to pages with animation. Everything is loading fast and I am not getting any browser crashes. (Had fun, as I got to see some more of your artwork!)

I am on Firefox 3. Can you tell me (or remind me) what browser you are using?

I hope other people will also test your site and report their experience. I think it is too early to say if this is a problem with your site or with SynthaSite. Let's collect more data and then see. . .

HI 1331,

I just visited your website as well (really like your animation!), and was able to quickly visit all your pages. Everything was loading very fast. Just want to say: Thanks for adding all those "Return" buttons to your various pages, so people can get back to your Home Page easily (as opposed to hitting the Back arrow of one's browser). Makes life so much easier for website visitors... ! :)

Well, just bought a new box. It is Vista with WIE. I am seeing other anomalies. Some of my links on THIRD TIER are apparently not there. I HATE VISTA and am more than willing to blame it on that fat thing. I did try Firefox but was over run with pop ups even with the blocker on. I am going to double check on the links. I have been working on those for two days and if Vista somehow screwed me out of all that work, I am going to hunt down that geek, Gates, and give him a piece of my mind! Sure, I know it isn't possible that it is Vista's fault, but like I said, I am ready to tar and feather the darn thing anyway.

Ok! It has picked up on the speed. Whatever it was it appears it was temporary. My links are ok. Just missing the link to the link kind of issue. So I guess I am good to go for now. Thank you for being there and thanks for enjoying my art. There is about to be several times that much when THIRD TIER opens.

Oh, I noticed something about the page editor that is very exciting. Images display right next to eachother without space between. Most sites do not have that in the editor. It has a tremondous adavantage. One can break an image into sections and post it into a grid arrangement. Looks like the one unsegmented image, but it can have a seperate link for each segment. This permits making multiple spots in an image hot links to relavent content. COOL!!!!!

Glad it has picked up speed for you. It could have been a temporary glitch with your internet connection as well. Let us know if it happens again. I look forward to seeing the THIRD TIER! I am glad you like the option to that allows you to add images without a space and can turn this into an advantage!

This sounds like a different problem. Yesterday the problem was with your live site, but now you say your site is not loading in the site builder. I am going to take a closer look and see what I can find out.

We checked on the total size of your site and it is not too big at all. It should load in the editor without any difficulty. I am going to have to ask one of our developers to take a look and find out why your site is not loading. There could be some delay with this as he is not online right now, so please bear with me.

Ok. Thanks. It has picked up. The editor is open and some things are going fine but some pages are taking more than one try to open into the editor. Those are usually pages with animation of course. Working well enough I can make some progress. Will be uploading images shortly. That worries me a bit. We will see. Hopefully it will turn out to be a transitional problem again.

It sounds generically similar to my problem. The difference being that I can open the live site but having great troubles editing. Stalls and sluggishness being the two major problems. It can't be tied to one side of the Indian ocean though. Issues this side but other sites are opening easily and quickly with no stalls. Synthasite editing is showing problems all the time. Typically three attempts for opening the index page for editing. maybe 8 minutes to complete. Embedded Google maps on GPC work but will not display after 10 minutes in the Synthasite site.
Have been in touch with the ISP and network providers but nothing concrete, which means little.
There are short periods of joy occassionally for one page editing then it slows down very quickly. Sometimes not a true stall but so slowly that the only hope is to close the browser and start again. Two computers, two browser types and no difference between them.
I noticed your comment about lost links. I had a similar experience on Sunday. I received an answer back from Synthasite and thought that I had probably screwed up but after reading your experience I'm wondering.
Today good up & downloads with other sites but my synthasite is sticking in the mud. Thank Monique for keeping it all balanced but I wish that the answer came out of the blue and could be tackled head on.

Peter, the lost links were my bad, but the editor has been so sluggish it did not load at times and at other times pages would not load. Had several occasions when the the site failed to update and generated errors. I do have lots of faith in Sinthasite. It is a work in progress. Things will get better.

Adrienna, saw a response in my mail but not here. Lots of things like the return buttons are coming. Those little swirls are 'page back' and later, one swirling in the opposite direction, will be page forward. However, they do not enable full navigation. When one goes to a new tier there is no way back except to return to the beginning. This, with changing content, insures a unique adventure no matter how many times one returns. I am busy with THIRD TIER now and much more content will be added today. Thank you for enjoying my site.

THIS IS SERIOUS! A few hundred links later and the objects with embedded links do not have the proper links! I am like totally screwed! No way to view the links to know which ones are proper and which ones are not. This is as bad as it gets. ALL THAT WORK !!!

Been checking it out. The links work through SECOND TIER. The 125 links on TIER THREE are complete chaos. No rhyme or reason to them. On some pages the links are just gone. On others all five images have the same link. Is there any way I can view the links between pages so I can get some handle on this? This is a totally major design flaw, kids. At least when one goes into change a link, the existing link should be viewable. Beyond the design flaw, you have some very serious server problems!

I am going to get some help with your links. However, it might take time as I need to seek help. Would you mind pausing work on your site until we can figure out what has gone wrong?

Checked further. Every single link done all day yesterday is incorrect. That is over a 12 hour span. This is far more than an error or hiccup. My entire site is now trash. When one clicks on any elemental symbol on each page it should open a new PASSAGE corresponding to it. It usually, if anything, opens the CHAMBER of that page on all four symbols and the PASSAGE. In other words, the last embedded link embedded in all five images. However, these were tested and worked before the images were uploaded and added to those pages. Sometime after all the links were in place and working, they got scrambled when updating after adding images to those pages linked to. This is the case for every single page done over the 12 hour period.

Hi 1331

Take a deep breath! I know you are upset. But we want to help. This is what I need to know:
1) The page name where there is ONE broken link (as an example)
2) The file name of that image
3) The page name that it is supposed to link to
4) The page name that it actually goes to

Any help you can give us would be appreciated!

I don't get upset in the usual sense of the word. Windows just shut down for updates in the midst of typing this and still I am only mildly homicidal. Every page on THIRD TIER is messed up. They are named aaa through www. On page aaa for example the rectangle in the middle should link to the page caaa, c representing the CHAMBER corresponding to page aaa. Same for all pages, so the CHAMBER for aww would be caww. The four symbols around the rectangles represent the elements and correspond to, a for air, e for earth, f for fire, and w for water. So if one is in the PASSAGE, or page, aaa and one clicks on the red upright triangle that represents fire, ordinarily that would link to page faa. If one is in efw and clicks on the inverted blue triangle representing water that should link to wfw. Between aaa and www are 64 pages. Everyone is messed up as far as I can tell. Oddly, SECOND TIER works much the same but PASSAGES, or pages, are named with only two letters, aa through ww, and there is no problem at all with them.

Ok, playing around to see what I can determine. Some links on page aaa were not working at all before but are now. Could have been the Bill Gates kids mucking about doing that intrusive update for all I know. There does seem to be a patern of sorts. On all pages between aaa and www the links in the rectangle seem to work, usually. The links in the icon above and below the rectangle seem to work...usually. the ones on the same line, or either side of the rectangle take on the same link as the rectangle. I have noted exceptions to this, where even the "page back" icon (the little swirl at the bottom) took on the link of the rectangle. However anything not repeated frequently, like all the same links per line, could be human error. Hope this helps.

Hey there

Sad to hear of your bummer of a time...

I had something running around my head just now reading your post and thought to ask. It may not apply in your case but I noticed when I was doing work on 2 pages of the same site at the same time in different tabs by copying one page to the other and when I updated the page I wished to use as my final sometimes info from the other page transferred over to the new page without me doing it (pictures and links and one case exactly what you described) I noticed this happened with 2 different websites as well.

Site a
Site b

Update site a and things from site b would appear on site a if they were both open in different tabs within the same window.

I just wonder if this has ever happened to you.

if you are inserting your pictures by means of a text widget I think your problem might be solved by leaving a space between the images in the middle because after going to your site and seeing it happen several more times I remembered that I had many images butted up next to each other (without a space between) and assigned them individual links then when I updated and viewed them in my browser they appeared as one link because the code somehow was interconnected.

I started leaving a space between each image from that point on it never happened again

Ed, the images are in a typical text box so they can all be linked, and they are butted up against each other. However, for layout demands related to coming content, they must butt up to each other. To insert spaces would make it impossible to complete the site. As for the situation with content open in two tabs at the same time updating together, can't say as I have noticed that one, but then usually what I will have is editor in one tab and preview in another. Thanks for the heads up. I will watch out for that eventuality. I can only hope that spaces will not be required. Some of the coming links will be as many as 32 links within what looks like a single image, achieved by tiling segments of it, seamlessly.

I am going to try to replicate by linking images without spaces between the images and see what happens. You guys are doing a stunning job here. Keep the suggestions coming!

I think the link to Synthasite is a bug, which may or may not be related.

so you purposely have all three in the middle on certain pages going to the same link or are they always separate?

By separating them with one space I don't mean _________ that much I mean only one blank space bar space _ would suffice.

To make the same distance between the top pic and the larger one simply add a blank line set to a smaller text size between them to allow uniformity.

I too am mostly a perfectionist and quite anal about such things so I do feel for you...

I wish you luck with your great site... Can't wait to see it finished...

If I can establish that it is the space that is the issue I might have a bug I can replicate. Anyway - let me stop watching this thread for a while and get to work.

and as in my case Monique this code meld did not always occur but when it did it was somehow solved by what I described above.

1131 Do us a favor and goto this page in your editor and in the text box select all the images by left clicking and draging down from top to bottom and highlight all 5 images and then goto HTML button in the toolbar then copy all the code within to email to Monique for viewing

http://1331.synthasite.com/wwa.php

do the same for this functional page for comparison
