Something that could work for a membership system on Yola

Hello Yola,

I would like to give you an idea I was thinking about. I work with databases and stuff and I remember you guys saying that there would need to be a database for each site or something similar to that (this was back when I didn't know anything about programming code, databases, etc.) but my idea is that there is one table for all users across Yola sites and you have a column called "site_id" or something and when users login on a site or sign up, you select the rows that match the current site id (and when you add them you simply add the site id in with it).

Or you could create a table (automatically) for each site that uses the membership feature if that's possible.

I think this would be a pretty good set up, but I don't know if the tables have limits of how many rows they can hold.

Anyway, I hope this gives you guys (developers) an idea of how you could go about creating a membership system. :)

It is good to have lateral thinkers like yourself Nathan. That's really neat and concise.

Great Idea Nathan (this is my first post on this forum in half a year), and as an answer to your question of maximum limits for tables - I don't think that's worth worrying about because for example, SQL server can hold as many rows in one table as there is space for (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143432.aspx. Anyways, this is a great idea I think, and I completely support this.

Hello Nathan

Thank you for sharing your idea with us. We are soon going to publish a roadmap on what features Yola is planning to add in the foreseeable future.

I think Nathan meant for this to be shown to the developers. Since maybe there aren't realizing actually how easy this feature would be how more popular this feature would make yola. In my opinion this is the most wanted Yola feature and it has been for OVER 4 years. I know the developers can't just make changes on the Yola site builder but I mean you should suggest something like this to be built immediately since it would be kinda for me with a little help. Since I don't work with PHP. But can guarantee that even Nathan could do this in a short amount of time. So the developers should too.

Thanks,
Shawn :)

I agree Shawn,

I think that this million times request would be the singularly most soul destroying non-committal that Yola has acknowledged. We've had "under-consideration" , "please tell us what features for this you want?", "on the plan", " will never be on the plan", "something being considered" and "NOT PLANNED".

I am not sure why people are hesitant to use "Auth-Pro" but that really is the best option at this time. If Yola do develop a beast then I would guess that it will not be free because of the resources consumed in the maintenance of the facility.

Shawn why don't you discuss this with Nathan again and create a Yola user, user friendly registration that you could fund or profit by subscription. There's a ready made client base here waiting it seems.

Gop, actually me and nathan are discussing this right now. We are planning that over the summer that we will create an easy to use tool to add a login system to your site with just a little HTML, CSS, and some JavaScript.

Hi Gop,

AuthPro is rather outdated in my opinion (doesn't seem like it has been updated for a while and the HTML of the login pages is from like 2001 lol) now that I know PHP and MySQL databases and I am considering creating some type of login system for Yola sites that would work similar to AuthPro but it will be fully customizable and there will be a nice web interface to manage your login system.

There could possibly even be user profiles and even "add friend" and messaging features if I can manage to get that to work with some type of JavaScript parameter in the URL :)

This would work great until Yola adds its own user management system.

This would only work via JavaScript files, however, just like AuthPro works but I will find out a better way to make it than AuthPro has been made.

Hi Nathan, Shawn and Gop,

I just wanted to hop in here and clarify the "not planned" status that was assigned here. I believe what Stefan meant by "not planned" is the method that Nathan described. As you are all well aware, this has been one of our most popular feature requests for quite some time, although consumer surveys we conducted did put it behind numerous other features that we prioritized including CSS editing, an Online Store, Facebook and Mobile publishing, etc.

That said, our engineers have spent time scoping this feature request in order to advise our Product team on the amount of time and resources it would take to develop a membership feature. This is a crucial aspect of how we plan features for the Sitebuilder.

We are not at liberty to discuss the status of this feature request at this time, but I did want to assure you that it is not being ignored or brushed aside.

Our engineers do monitor this forum, but I will personally insure that your implementation idea is reviewed both by our engineering and product teams Nathan.
