Hi Shifty,
Had a quick look at your site and alot of good ideas there. Here are my opinions if your interested?

1. You have a blue banner across the top of your site (homepage) which doesnt make any sense, but if you delete that along with the wording (S.C.M.C) at the top of the page and move your own banner up (with the 2 minis and the wording in between) as the header it will look alot better if you get me with your cars as links to your other pages but trying to get them to underline or change colour when clicked on!!

2. The writing in the boxes is a bit hard to read due to the picture background! If you could change that and make the writing shout out to people it would also help.

3. You have a badge as your cursor but it doesnt let visitors know when they are on a link in order for them to follow that link as it doesnt change when hovering over an article or picture, I would recommend changing that or for the cursor to change when hovering over links.

4. You have a few picture spread around but no explanation as to what or who the people or pictures relate to and a short description may help!

Hope i helped you out a bit, and a good start to your website some good ideas!!

Cheers

Craig

Ditto to Craig's comments. The middle portion of the home page looks really good and then it sort of wanders away at the bottom. You also have an image in the very tippy top right corner that is not showing due to not having "resources" in the link. Lots of really good content and I like the little cars for the menu on other pages. Keep up the good work!

Shifty, hello there, just come online. Hey your website is good and lots and lots of ideas and information for people on it, which is what they wish for in a club, this looks like it will be keeping you busy with updating etc. So you are doing well. May I also add a little ....I hope you don't mind, but you have done well, have made a few comments, so hopefully constructive little bits for you which may be of use to you .....

Agree with Craig's comments above, and also the cursor, but also in a way, I do like the cursor as think most people will know they can just click and see if a link, but agree perhaps it could change or something happen so people know if the item brings up something else. ... however, as it is not on the other pages, does not flow through the site.

Definitely do delete the top blue line and on other pages also. You have a nice banner for your name with the minis and by moving it up can delete the abbreviated letters in top left plus blue line.

Feel the front page really does not relate to the other pages (or I should say other pages relate to index page?), ie different look/layout etc, lots of bright pictures/links info, etc, however other pages a little plain when you go to them, is it poss for you to sort of carry some design across so that pages flow a little onto one another?

Diane said about content on home page, and where it sort of wanders off at bottom was something I also noticed. This may be me, but do not like the 'upcoming events' scrolling across bottom of page.

Also when selecting links on other pages I automatically went to the wording under the row of minis, and then found had to select a car to proceed. Felt not quite right.

Oh,when I clicked on the download button on download page to see what would happen, it came back with: "Firefox prevented this site (www.south-mini club.com) from asking you to install software on your computer" - but you may know of this already?

Lastly, as pictures on front page and links page etc are smaller and you click on them to enlarge, felt the photos of members cars were quite large and would be nice to see them smaller as per other links, and then have them expand. (again, may be only me feeling).

For a first-timer you are doing so well and congratulate you, especially as you have asked for some constructive comments. Hope have not said too much, but these may be helpful as realise you said still have lots to do and were wanting some comments. therefore hope of use. All the best with the rest of it, love to see when completed further as used to like the minis (still do, but like my comfort a little better!).

Hi Shifty,

There's a reason why websites look the way they usually do and that's because they're easier for people to find their way around and easier for the search engines to "read" and list and index. The more the search engines like you, the better you will rank in their listings, and the more people will find you and visit your site and buy whatever it is you're trying to sell them (even if it's free information).

This may not matter to you with a project such as this one, whose purpose seems to be more to have fun than to make money, but you might want to keep that in mind in the future.

Good luck!

Thankyou all for your comments and suggestions, I appreciate it.

1st off @ Craig - There is nothing I can do about the blue banner at the top of my homepage as it belongs to a Yola free style and as I am not signed to Yola pro at the moment I cant add CSS.
I have got rid of the cursor now so that it shows its a link when hovered over.
The text has been changed to Vagabond font as this is the font we use on our club banner so that keeps it all in tune so to speak.
All the miss-placed images are now linked to their own pages which will be worked on in due course.

@ Diane - The corner ribbon is now gone (probably not showing up in some browsers,

@ JenC - I agree, the theme of the site does leave a lot to be desired so I plan to carry the theme accross over to the other pages.
Upcoming events has now been removed from the homepage and now has a page of its own, I plan to change the way it looks but as I said in reply to Craigs post I cannot yet implement CSS.
The images expanding into bigger picture is a concern of mine as well, ive yet to find a resource that will alow me to upload all pictures from a certain event and display them as thumbnails yoet when clicked they will expand.

Once again thanks to everyone for their support and comments, if anyone has any eye-catching gallery viewers, then the HTML code would be welcomed.

Shifty, hello there. just something re pictures enlarging. You can leave them large, then pull over the image widget, and then 'pull down to the size you wish' on the widget. It actually shrinks the photo onthe page. then when you link it and click on it, will bring up large image on a new page.
Would agree to Craig re moving across to one of the styles which you can change the banner, and is plain to use, they will suit your website. I have done so and none of the 'true' original site remains, totally looks like my own designed site. Good luck with this. let us know when updated.

Hi Shifty,

Would you not be better shifting to a new web template then in order to get rid of the blue banner and make your other one the main banner so to speak, as your site would look alot better!!

Also you can use Flikr Lightbox for your pictures as thumbnails and get them to enlarge when pressed on, this is located on the menu's to the right under Photo Galleries and Videos!!

You can get rid of the blue banner with this code: <!-- <style type="text/css">
#menu{
display:none
}</style> --> Just add it to an html widget at the top of your page. Do this on a Test Page first!!!!
However, there is a reflection that you will not be able to get rid of because it's in the page. But if you move your other banner up by using negative numbers in the margins on the Properties tab, the reflection may not be too noticeable.

Thanks for you replies guys,

Craig - unfortunately Flickr only allows you to upload 100mb per month and as we are a fairly new club we have,nt the funds to upgrade to a pro account so was hoping to find some sort of html code that would allow me to up photos in albums and they enlarge when clicked on similar to lightbox.

Diane - I used the code you suggested and that worked great, I actually quite like the reflection it leaves at the top of the page.
