Synthasite is currently misbehaving. Been using it all day so far. No problems. But now the sitebuilder won't allow me to delete any of the widgets. eg I want to remove some graphic widgets and replace with text ones.

I think I've worked out why this is happening.

Somehow today in the process of inserting anchors on one of my pages, the bottom banner has become included. If I try to delete the html master anchor widget (near the top of the page) that now contains the bottom banner within its group, most of the page disappears. This is because the html anchor widget was not isolated from the other widgets; it contained them (almost the entire page) within its layer.

Help?

Or the whole page will have to be redone.

Hi Paul

Sorry to hear you are having this problem... You can imagine that with my site I have experienced mostly all of them. ;)

What I have found to work when this happens is to click on the HTML or Widget and when the popup appears and the code is shown

1) Highlight and cut the code (a blank box should be shown)
2) Type a few letters (Nothing special just fill the box with a few letters or numbers)
3) Click "OK"
4) Do this one at a time for the troublesome HTML or codes until you find the one that is causing the problem

I have had code interact with other code I have placed on my pages and been worried that my page would have to be redone but after a few times of redoing pages I have been very careful to test my newly added code found from the web on a test page first.

If you remove the code which is causing the content and banner to disappear you should have your page back in full.

If that doesn't work let me know and I can try to pull another out of the hat for you...

Did you read my extra bit? ie my own reply.

I think it's the master anchor layer that's done it. It's got just about the whole page - incl the bottom banner - grouped within it.

I think if the page code can be changed so that the bottom banner is 'released' it will take care of itself. Does the master anchor html layer need to include all other relevant layers within it? Or should it be isolated from them? If the latter is correct, that is the problem with my page.

Cheers

That's just it... If you do not remove the code then you cannot edit or use that page. If you are experiencing this problem then this tells me that you need to have a different anchor code.

I have used several and yes the same thing that is happening to you now has happened to me. (Exactly the same)

I had to do the process I described above to free up the page and make it so that I did not have to delete the page and start over.

Basically what you do by opening the widget and cutting and replacing the code with a few letters is to unlock the control that widget has over the page. Once the code is deleted from within the widget it should stop the fault.

I will locate the code that I know works with the system. It may take me a little while so be patient ;)))

Well I've discovered one thing.

If I delete the widget that is the master anchor, it solves part of the problem. ie something actually gets deleted. Bad news is it's almost the entire page that goes, because the rest of the page is contained within the field of that widget.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you but I don't see how removing that widget will help me.

It's almost like I need to access the entire page's html; then I might stand a chance.

:)

Paul I don't want you to delete the widget until its free from the code. Try this...

1) Click on the widget and replace the code with a few letters then click OK to make the widget inactive. (only the letters should appear on the screen)
2) Then click "Preview"
3) Then in the toolbar click "REFRESH"
4) Then delete the widget and
5) Then in the toolbar click "REFRESH" again

Then you can use this anchor code here.

http://tipsandtricks.synthasite.com/A...

And if that does not work then you may have to delete the page and start over but as I know from experience that is quite bothersome and I am trying to walk you through a back door I found around it. I have used this many times and many different situations

Um Ed

I found one of the html widgets that would open.

Cut the code, replaced with some gibberish. Hit OK and preview.

The site will now not open at all.

It sounds like a bug caused from your code...

Could you share with me the place that you found the code so that I might try to recreate it before I go to sleep...

By deleting the widget like you had done before it may have done something to the others and caused a really bad bug for you.

What is your page URL so that I might save your content for you and give you an opportunity to speed up a page rebuild if you need to delete your page

You know Paul I see from your previous posts that you are using the code that Marije gave you (The same one I gave just now) and as I know that the code works I believe that it may be the code interacting with a widget already on your site. Have you included any features to that page and if so which ones.

I have as well had this kind of thing happen with interaction between features in a widgetbox widget and a anchor code in an HTML

Just a thought that if this is the case then you may wish to omit that widget from your recreated page...

well you are probably eating and it is beyond my bedtime.

To save yourself some time in recreating your page over you can

1) Open a new website
2) Open the page you are about to delete in your Browser
3) Highlight on all the text
4) Right click then click "Copy"
5) In your site builder and with the new website open drag a text widget onto the page
6) Paste the copied text from your original site into the text widget.

Do this with all your text and then update your site and view in your browser

7) Close out of the new site
8) Open your original site in your editor
9) Delete your troublesome page (if this is your index then a new one will be created in its place and be assured that your remaining pages will remain intact)

Reverse the process to place your saved text to your new page in your original site.

I have rebuilt pages in mere minutes this way.

Good night and good luck. I wish my eyes could keep open until you get this one worked out.

And I do believe that it is not the anchor code alone which is causing the problems for you. It may simply be a perfect storm so to speak. Try to include all the text, images and then the the anchor code before any other widgets to your page. add a widget one at a time and if this happens again then you know which widgets to omit the next time.

I think get satisfaction is experiencing a bug as well because I just saw your last and my last replies disappear from the thread by refreshing the page.

Paul have you cleared your cache and temporary files as this sometimes frees up the site builder being stuck.

Marije

What I would give for some kind of feature which allow reps to access the users computer to troubleshoot and see what the user is seeing at the time that they are experiencing the glitch.

If I was in the city Paul is in I would be there in a heartbeat. This sounds like a tricky one that makes it worse in that we cannot see his screen and his problem.

I am wondering if by his deletion of the anchor without freeing it up caused some of the Synthasite code for the banner to delete as well. Thereby causing a larger problem to occur.

just another thought or question for you paul...

Did you by chance have two editors open at the same time and then update one while the other was open in another editor with your other site? The way I described above was to open your old page in your web browser and your new site in your site editor.

Ed,

You have it a bit wrong re the bottom banner.

It got itself into the html master anchor layer - I don't know how, but it may have been because I somehow positioned one of the relevant anchor layers incorrectly. So it was there at the bottom, just not exactly where it should have been. Looked kinda funny, as the font size increased, due to the formatting of what was above it and still active, and instead of full black filling the bottom of the screen, the black ended at the 900 pixel window!

Anyway, if it behaves itself and lets me do that page sgain, I'll be verrrrrrry careful when it comes to putting those anchors in again.

Cheers

IMPORTANT QUESTION:

Is it safe to construct the page, THEN insert the anchors?

Or should every single thing be done in the exact correct descending order?

Good man... You are one smart cookie to never have two site builders open at the same time.

One thing to add though about copying text out of Word... It causes text errors in IE and Opera sometimes. The text will look fine in Firefox when viewed in your browser but in IE and Opera the text is filled with added code which shouldn't be there.

Wordpad and Notepad are the error free text editors for use with your site. If you have text in Word then it's best to paste into Wordpad or Notepad then copy and then paste in your text widget. Weird but it happens. I had pages of the stuff and had to delete all the added code that appeared.

As to the order of adding the anchors. You can build your page with your text and images then include the anchors. I would save including any widgets until after you know that your page works flawlessly as the problem you are experiencing is more than likely related to a reaction between the anchor code and a widget.

You never did say if you even had any widgets on that page???

I am going to try something to see if I can recreate the bug on my end right now...

Yes, I've discovered the text issue with Word.

Marvellous. :)

Oh, my page is full of widgets. Text widgets, image widgets, nothing but widgets. Widgets everywhere.

okay let me rephrase the question... ;)))

Widgets like widgetbox widgets or flickr widgets or widgets you found online somewhere?

Can you remember the ones you had because I cannot recreate it on my end. I delete, I change the anchor code, I add stuff to the code and yet I can still delete them without a hitch.

It was over 2 1/2 months ago since this happened to me and I do not recall which widget it was that caused my meltdown.

I cannot see your source code as you did not share the URL of the troubled page...

Oh, sorry.

Just the sitebuilder widgets. Nothing from outside.

I've deleted the troubled page. I can give you the url of the one I'm slowly rebuilding?

Originally the anchor contents went immediately below the grey heading; they'll go there again when I get to that bit.

How did you manage to free it up?

Yes I'm still building the site. Not published yet, have own domain though when the thing is finished.

I managed to free it up by deleting the master anchor layer - unfortunately that zapped everything contained with it for the ride.

Are you unable to actually view my site as I build it? That's a pity if that's the case, as it would make things easier and it looks rather nice.

:)

Cheers
