The Competition

I'm a little confused when it comes to page rank/listing, what ever you want to call it. I've been working on my site for a long time now, get around 700 unique users a month, doing well for myself, have recently seen that I have a Website Grade of 81% which made me feel pretty happy.

I then looked at the competition to see what their sites looked like, what they offered and what their website grade was to see if I could do better. I'm a little sad to see that even though they scored lower than me, they were higher up in Google.

Using a website grader some only score 40% , they have missing and broken links, too long/too short descriptions, spelling mistakes and ImPropeR Use of LaRGe and SmaLL LetteRs, no where near as many cached pages, no blog, no RSS feed etc etc etc.... Can someone shine a light on why such sites would feature higher than mine? www.a-class-driving.com

Hi Will,

How are you?

Backlinks my friend - thats whats needed, and back links from high ranked sites.

I really good easy one is twitter -- everytime you share a page on twitter its a back link to your site. You could look around for other similar services.

I use share links on all my pages - share it a few times on twitter and google picks it up as a being worhty content.

If you decide to take this route and join twitter i can give you the code for the share links, see here for example (bottom of the page) http://hexham.info/joan-thirlaway

I use Website Grader also and it really is just a tool to help keep you on the right track.....Have you listed your site with Google and Bing local business listings? They are both free and when anyone in your area does a search for driving schools you will come up....Age of a site is taken into consideration as is if your site is registered for more than one year....Have you submitted your sitemap xml to Google,Bing and Yahoo?

Is there any type of code you have added that only exists on your blog page? Maybe some little snippet of something is blocking them from crawling your blog page.

Did you see my post a few months back about submitting a separate sitemap.xml for your blog on your Google Webmaster Account? I get some good back links from being on blogged.com and http://www.blogcatalog.com/ They will want you to add their link to your blog page but I think it is worth it for the back links directly to your blog....My blog page ranks highest on my site and has about 250 back links pointed to it.

You just go to your Webmaster Account...Then to...your site on the web...subscriber stats....click submit feed as a sitemap...I used my blog rss URL and it seems to work fine.

Hi John, hey Duke. Thanks for the input. I've looked at the competition and they don't have any twitter posts. I've 3 blogs on my site that I try and update on a regular basis, do these no longer hold any sway in the eyes of google?

Im both in Bing and yahoo. have been trying to get in DMOZ for about a year now and still no joy.

Might jump on the twitter boat, see how it goes as far as google is concerned.

Blogs are great even if you just use them for company updates or when you run a special....You have the blogs on your www.a-class-driving.com site? Twitter is great also....Bing and soon Google will post tweets in a special search.....I include a few keywords and my URL.There is a nice firefox add on for tweets....https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire... you might like it....I use it a lot.....Here is what I am talking about for Twitter/Bing http://www.bing.com/Twitter

Hey Duke

I've joined the twitter gang and have had a look at the share idea you posted with the hexham site. I really like it and wondered if it were possible to nab the code of you???

Good news Will,

Remember to join Yola and me :)
http://twitter.com/yola
http://twitter.com/hexham_info

<!--
The code for the twitter share links is

<script type="text/javascript">
tweetmeme_source = 'hexham_info';
</script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://tweetmeme.com/i/scripts/button...>

-->

Be sure to change where it says hexham_info to the username you use for twitter.

Enjoy

Lee.
