The Honey Bear had a shave and a hair cut...

This is not so much a question but more of a work in progress and preview of H.B.P. A shave and haircut on the brown bear if you will...

So, I got a wild hair this morning and decided I was going to tweak the look of the old bear and do some things that I had been putting off for too long. Half a day later and boy am I spent...

I really enjoyed the look, feel and width of the Tastelessly style but the extra white on the sides and the off gray trim was not what I wanted in the end.

I chose to upgrade to Burlap. An equally wide style with a little shorter banner and the ability to show off more of my Honey background which I quite like. I feel in the end I will be very pleased with the results. I am already and I am not nearly done.

I have made an near identical index page and you can compare the two.

Hmmm, how did those links get on the bear's mouth and the bee on the banner? Perplexing isn't it? ;) Speaking of which, how did the slogan get up there and linked for that matter?

brownie

After the shave and haircut

Before...

Anyway, after a 12 hour binge of coding, coding and yes more coding I am beat...

The things I did here are sad to say not as easy as it looks and can if not done right be very damaging to your site. With that said if you feel the need to take a look see at my Source that is completely up to you. Remember always use a test page ;)

I have not moved it over yet to my main site. I will do that when I get at least 12 hours of straight sleep...

Ed was here...

OK well some of you did not get the before hair cut and after thing so here is the new look URL without the "After the shave and haircut" text

Hey Ed

The new-do is looking great! I know you put in a lot of work and I think it really paid off. Well-done!

How did you do your background and keep the middle part white? I did the same on one of my sites, but I'm always looking for an easier way to do it.

Never mind... I just realized that it's the template that allows that white column to remain static! Duh... I feel so silly now! LOL.

Tomato- tomatah!

Yes.. can definitely see your banner part.

But I have to confess my ignorance - what are hot spots? All I keep think is "hot flash" and that some how the bee going through some menopausal phase - not a pretty sight to behold I don't think. LOL. =)

the hot spots I am referring to LittleYou are transparent images over the mouth of the bear and the bee which have links to my main site.

If you right click and then click the "Select all" you can see them.

Hi Ed

Before and after shots are always fun! I can imagine how much work went into that make-over.

I love both the Burlap and Tastelessly styles. However, Burlap is very clean and crisp and works really well with the level of customization you have put into your site. Basically, the default style gets out of the way and allows your creativity to totally dominate to the point that the original style is no longer evident. Which is really what we aim for with the flexible style collection (more to come soon)

Anyway, in my opinion, The Bear is looking smart and well groomed and cleans up very nice indeed!

Your banner image is not displaying on the new site for me. Let us know if that is a glitch on your end, or something we need to help with.

Thanks for warning people about the complexity of the code and the potential problems that can occur.

Watch out for those coding binges - can be harmful to the health!

Hmmm Tre Bizarre Monique... Tre Bizarre indeed

I have looked at my new page in FF, Opera and IE and I see my new banner perfectly. I wonder why you do not and wonder if everyone else can see it too???

Here is a screen shot.

Hmmm hey Monique you may want to try one or all of these OK:

1) Clear your history
2) Try in another browser
3) Try on another computer
4) Maybe try on another network

If all those fail then I guess I am out of luck then and will just crawl into my cave... ;)

Hardy har har...

Seriously, I knew the girls would have some good input. Thanks a bunch

You know I think this what it feels like to be addicted to plastic surgery,,, Well for websites that is ;)

LOL - did all the above, actually :) Anyway - banner is displaying for me now. I have relocated from the office back home and the internet is faster here today for some reason, so I am putting this one down to a dodgy connection. Sorry to stress you out. I am seeing your site in it's full glory now!

Nice screenshot Littleus.

I also looked at those two first. The bee has a link.
I saw after that Ed is talking about the banner.

So....to change my last answer. I get no links in the banner, Ed.
I don't get the playhouse in the center either - may be my connection!

Looks like those are migratory with the screen settings of the user.

Hmmm I will have to work on finding a snippet to lock those in or simply not use them. I am up for the challenge but tomorrow. ;)

Thanks you all and yes a resounding YES that is one great screen shot my dear...

Nope, but I'll try again later when I get home (faster connection)

I figured out where the transparent gif's are now. On my screen (1280 x 1024px)
they are both in the honeycombs on either side.

How did you get the blue filter effect BTW.

silly lovely girl... The bear on the bottom had no link. It was the one up on the top eating honey on the banner.. Just because he is sitting in the white space don't count him out. He is in th e banner image.

Your screen capture abilities are going to be legendary now after this my dear...

How really freeking odd that the share this button wont work... OHHHH maybe it is because it is on a site it is not intended to be on... No worries on that one as the main H.B.P site works quite well.

Hey Alex yes I have heard that many people would like that as well. ;)

I spent months working on a way to do it and I stumbled upon it while working with the ribbon generator and hmmm what do you know it was easier than writing the code myself and very stable. I will as time goes on write a tutorial but that may take some time.

I really must sleep now... Zzzzzzz

Stage 2 done

So after another 12+ hour session the bear has switched to the new look on all his pages.

I don't care to see another two column widget for a while (LOL) and the fastest way to add the new three images at the bottom on all my pages was to of course use 4 two column widgets per page and three times for each page upload the same three images over and over again. I saved at the least 20 minutes per page by not waiting to load the file manager. Hey it works and I am OK with that... ;) Branding stinks sometimes doesn't it??? (LOL)

I deleted a few hundred meg of old files which sadly did not speed it up all that much but I will live...

I would quite enjoy it if the programmers and those in charge could at some time in the future consider a right click feature on any Two column widget and copy the code for everything contained within at one time and combined. With such a right click and go feature we would be able to easily copy large quantities of content from page to page and site to site. Not that I need it now but such a thing would have been wonderful.

I had so many scripts to add to every page that a few pages in began to double them up in one HTML widget to save time and in fact it sped up page load as well so again I am OK with that... Boy I would love that site wide code feature to make it as easy as add code to a box in the side bar and have the option of which pages to add it to. Dreaming of sugar plumbs again ;)

Now to take a siesta and then later this week work on some editing of content.

All in all I quite like the look of the old bear now and think that it turned out really great...

Gonna sleep now. Hope everybody is having fun.

Ed

Hey Ed - toiling away to achieve perfection eh?!

Just reading your comments above - in regards to copying - you could have done the "save page as" as this would have copied everything and just deleted the stuff you didn't need. =)

I love the winking bear - he's quite the charmer!

I take it you did not create those hot flashes.. ahem.. I mean hot spots like before?

The only thing that would make it perfection - is if you could center your "please donate to these worthy charities..." - it seems a little off alignment unless that is what you intended.

Perfection is never reached my friend... ;)

The copy page would not have worked because I was not creating pages I was editing all my original pages to include the new branding look and if I was starting a new site then yes it would have been easy as pie.

That is why I think the right click and copy the widgets feature would be perfect for just such an occasion.

No hot spots yet ;)

I have to get my head around this codes inability to stay put. It is migratory (moves around) depending on the one looking at the page. Your resolution is not the average and thus is why it will never look perfect.

Thanks I thought the winking bear suited H.B.P well and will I hope be memorable to all who look at the site. I just hope that I am pulling off the somewhat professional look... (LOL) In a field where other companies spend tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars to build and maintain their sites I have my work cut out for me. I have 95% of them beat in the searches but if nobody can afford to buy they don't search you know. Arggg luxury items...

Oh and the bear on the red shield in my banner is going to be my main shirt, hat and auto signage branding. I can't wait to see what that looks like on the chest and the sleeves of jackets and shirts.

Ahhh.. the lightbulb comes on in this gal's head! Thanks for explaining more clearly Ed regarding the copy function. I do agree this would make life a lot easier!

Hmmm.. I did some quick look-around to see if there was some script that allowed for definite centering - but to no avail. My suggestion is this then, I would make put that into a floating box, rather than one floating line. This way it looks purposefully made to float on the side rather than looking like it's supposed to be in the center but it's not. Do you know what I mean? I have a great little floating script that you may be able to use. Let me know if you're interested.

Great branding idea! Very well suited to your business!

Stage 2 1/2 New banner

Hey LittleYou

Check out my updated banner and tell me the feminine opinion... That right side of my brain has been a little over stimulated lately

Oh am P.S. hit the "Ctrl" key and then the "+" key twice... That should make your screen be what the rest of the world sees... ;)

Everybody else feel free to let me know if you like the new banner also

Hey Ed

I've been flipping back and forth between the new and old pages trying to decide which one I like. I like both for different reasons.

The new one - I absolutely love the graphic on the right with the little children on the flowers and the house. I think that totally speaks to your product of building playhouses. As much as I like the bear, I actually think I prefer the old bear as it helps to ground the banner and give it a more professional look. This new bear has a slightly goofy look which to me expresses that there's nothing really important or serious to warrant going down your site (speaking from my alter-ego adult version of me).

The old banner I love because it really pops out and grabs you with its bold red color. It helps to separate the banner from the rest of your page. It's not as "cute" as your new banner though. It does look professional though.

Sorry Ed.. I probably didn't help matters at all.

I would try blending the two! Red background, your new graphic on the right with the flowers and children, the old bear on the left?

So I changed the banner one last time and WOW am I 100% pleased with how it finally turned out...

I think that I am a little morbid in the fact that I placed the children as the flowers and the bees are everywhere...

Well I quite like them all and as my site grew it changed. I made use of the ruby red mouse over buttons and then had to fit in the banner to match the buttons. After I removed the buttons I told myself that one day I would change up the banner also. That turned into 6 months and figured now was the time. The kids, the sun, clouds, rainbow and grass all came fro the vector clip art site I passed along a while back. I had to combine everything into s visually appealing jumble of images. Glad its done LOL

You know I fought long and hard on the red shield and bear thing and thought that the future was more important to my company than my likes of the bear and shield. You see, I decided on the as you put it goofy bear because it will be in the future more compatible with my long term goals, advertising needs and desire to target the younger audience on the street, at events and online. Yes it was a hard decision as I have made good use of the old bear for quite a while now and think it time to prepare for the months to come.

Plus, Goofy Brownie (his name) is growing on me and to tell you the truth I cannot wait to get that banner on the side of a truck one of these days...

The new one is cutesy and fun and exactly what I was going for.

I do so greatly appreciate your input and opinion... Thanks much ;)

Oh and I did try to blend them both like you said but in the end the new on won out over them all. The reasons that I did not choose the combined ones was that the red became detracting and out of place when it was anything but full page width.

It's always good to see things evolve and grow. It can become too stagnant if one keeps with the same thing over and over. I'm sure that Goofy Brownie will definitely reach out to many people!

By the way... how did you use a vector clipart? I didn't think Yola could use .eps? I've seen so many vector graphics that I would love to use but didn't think I could.

These ones I used are from this post I made some time ago.

http://getsatisfaction.com/yola/topic...

You have many options with this site and one of them is the ability to download the image you want as a HI resolution PNG with the transparent background. Then I used my Microsoft Publisher to make the banners with countless layered objects without the need to photo shop them all.and then saved the finished banner as a PNG file.

I gotta shut my eyes now... Thanks again

To quote Shakespeare "To BEE or not to BEE that is the question"

What do you think? I find it amusing that it does the backside flight of the transparent PNGs and text with the opaque background 3/4 down the page. Additionally, it either fights or dances with the menu bees. It is growing on me more and more.

I am in the process of making the menu buttons all as the pop-up bear face. (all but the last of course)

Check out the flying bee here.

Lambofgod thanks much I am simply having too much fun as you can tell...

I changed it up a bit and think the bears do the menu more justice than the bee mouse overs and now the cursor bee can say hello to Mr. Honeypot mouse over...

Check out the flair I put on the "Build a free website" button. Hold the bee (cursor) over the button a few seconds. Pretty cool I think ;)
