The page isn't redirecting properly

Hi, my site sometimes loads, but over the past 2 months, many times I receive this instead:

The page isn't redirecting properly
Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.

This happens when using my domain name or using the yolasite.com name, too; I have cleared cookies and recent history but it keeps happening... everything was fine for almost 2 years - thank you!

Hi Taffy the Great!,

Are you referring to http://www.taffythegreat.yolasite.com/? If so, I do not see a custom domain associated with your account, so can you tell me what domain you are referring to and how you are connecting it to your website?

hi Laura, my domain name is below, and is hosted through Go Daddy, who forwards it to the yolasite you posted, and it has worked perfectly for almost two years until recently

taffythegreat.com

thank you for your help!

Hi Olivia

The domain taffythegreat.com is not pointing to Yola. When I look up the domain settings, the A records are different from Yola's. Is it possible that your domain expired with GoDaddy? As it is not managed by us, you will need to contact their Support, or edit the domain settings in your GoDaddy account to point to our IP address. Here is the tutorial: Publish to a domain you already own.

Thanks for your reply Stefan, but my domain name is pointed at Yola and I just clicked on it and it took my to my Yola site, as it has for almost 2 years, however it has been having problems lately. The domain name taffythegreat.com is being forwarded to taffythegreat.yolasite.com and I don't know if you can access that info without logging into my account at Go Daddy, but that's where I set it up long ago.

Please keep in mind that this doesn't just happen when I click on my custom domain name, it also happens when I click on http://www.taffythegreat.yolasite.com/, which I just did, and I received the message that I posted above about not redirecting properly, which is how I know the problem is not with Go Daddy.

It doesn't happen every time, but it is now happening often.

Thanks

Hello Olivia

I'm not sure why your domain taffythegreat.com would partly show and partly not show your Yola website, but the most important thing is that is pointing to the IP address 50.63.202.31 right now. This is not our correct current IP address. In order to point your domain to Yola correctly, you will need to edit the IP addresses in your GoDaddy domain account. Please change the two A records to our IP address 184.72.229.176. For detailed steps please see our tutorial Configuring your GoDaddy domain.

I changed the IP address, I'm not sure why it was wrong, I never entered one, Go Daddy set it automatically when I set the domain name to forward to my direct Yola link, and for almost 2 years it has was fine. The biggest question though is why the Yola link, http://www.taffythegreat.yolasite.com/, is also saying it can't redirect, because that is obviously not a Go Daddy issue.

It happens just as often with my direct Yola link as with the custom domain name; not always, but often, whereas for the past 2 years, it was fine.

Hello Taffy,

What had been setup on your GoDaddy domain is a process called Domain Masking. This is very different to Domain Pointing which points an externally registered domain to Yola's servers. Domain Masking is a Forwarding process which automatically directs your domain name's visitors to a different website (in your case that would be taffythegreat.yolasite.com). Masking also prevents visitors from seeing your domain name forwarding by keeping your GoDaddy domain name in the Web browser's address bar.

With Masking you do not need a paid Yola subscription you can use a Yola free subscription. The process that is currently being suggested is Domain Pointing which does need a Bronze, Silver or Gold subscription. The original IP address is the GoDaddy Masking IP address, the suggested IP address is the address of Yola's servers.

There are now 2 things being confused here. Pointing and Masking.

Thank you Gop, I understand and I changed the IP address back to what it was... yes, I am forwarding with masking.

I thought I'd try the suggestion just to see if it helped, obviously it made things worse so I put it back.

It is not a Go Daddy issue, because even the direct Yola link (taffythegreat.yolasite.com) is having the same issue. I wish someone would respond to that.

Thanks again.

I'm really glad that you set the Masking back because I think that the whole issue would become confused.

May I ask if you have added anything to your site content recently. I read the error message follow up as I see the same error when I try to look at your site but the solutions offered don't really hold up. There's obviously another reason.

I hear what you are saying about it not being related to GD's setup and wondering if you have tried contacting GD support to see if they have any experience with similar issues in their Knowledge Base? Masking is a really unfamiliar process with Yola built sites. I think I have seen one or possibly two references before from users and I honestly don't remember the issues related to these. I'm wondering if they (GoDaddy) can trace these reported re-directions to see where it all happens?

I hope this is solved quickly for you and your business and I'm sorry I can't offer anything to help.

It has probably been a year or more since I added anything to my site, or even logged in... I haven't contacted Go Daddy for a few reasons, most importantly that the exact same issue happens when I click on taffythegreat.YOLASITE.com, and that obviously is not related to Go Daddy. Not 100% of the time, but many times, just as the domain name is doing, which means the domain name has nothing to do with it. For some reason, even though I've been talking about this since I started this thread, no one has acknowledged it, they keep talking about Go Daddy.

Everything was fine for 2 years until now, therefore how I set things up doesn't seem to be the issue.

I really do hear what you are saying.

What I'm suggesting is that GD are far more experienced and much more enabled in Domain management than Yola. They have a much broader base with a lot more experience. So wondering if their knowledge will offer anything to the situation?

I have done some searching around and the only thing I can see on this issue is on a site http://wiki.gandi.net/ where they say related to this specific issue where the other stuff doesn't fit:
The most frequent causes of this situation are described below.
A web forwarding entry that redirects an address to itself

Verify the domain's web forwarding entries to make sure none of them would result in a loop.

For example, let's say you add a web forwarding entry on the domain example.com.

If you enter www for the subdomain and www.example.com for the forwarding address, the result will be that www.example.com redirects to www.example.com, creating a redirect loop.

How to fix it

Delete the web forwarding entry causing the loop, and see www if you're having trouble getting your domain to work with (or without) www.

There may also be a delay in response (24 to 48 hours) to a change that you make to the DNS management facility if you enable or disable something there and it's worthwhile keeping this in mind.

Thank you, I will contact GD and see if they have any ideas.
