Splash pages: What do you think of them?

There is a debate as to whether having a splash page is a good idea or if leading directly into the site is a more sound design method.

First of all - what is a splash page? A splash page is typically an introductory page your visitors see before actually entering your site.

Some potential benefits for a splash page are:
1. Gives your visitors language options before entering your site.
3. Adds a visual element to catch your visitor's attention.
4. Reading or selecting the site requirements needed to peruse the site.
5. Showing off your best work like a portfolio.

Some potential drawbacks for a splash page are:

1. Splash pages can take a long time to load due to the flash animation
2. For returning visitors, it can be annoying to repeatedly have to sit through the flash animation each time.
3. Splash pages that only contain flash animation can actually hurt your SEO ranking as flash cannot be read by search engines
4. If your visitors do not have the necessary program to run the splash page, the first impression your visitor gets is that your site is not accessible.
5. Website users like to get to the point fast. Studies show that about 1/4 of visitors will leave a website if they see a splash page, before ever getting to the real website.

What are your thoughts?

In my opinion it is better not to have a splash page but what would be best is to give the site owner the option to choose if he will add a splash page to his/her web site.Keep up the great work.

Hello Sanja,

Firstly thanks for the education. I was unaware of the definition of splash page containing a Flash component.

Another aspect of an intro page is that it may be short circuited. If people come to your site by search engine they are likely to touchdown at the specific reference which is likely not to be your intro page. For my site it's less than 1 in 20 and most of these only went to the intro page subsequent to landing.

As for Flash intros I agree with the cons. This is re-enforced by sites that have a switch off button... Makes me ask the question if it's escapable what's the point?

The cons are interesting. The list you mention seems to suggest a irrevocable choice option. In other words you have to make your choices then and suggests that you can't do it subsequently. I know that you don't mean that but once again if this is flexible what's the point of the splash page?

Portfolio showcasing is valid if they come in through the Splash page but now the question arises: How do you get all entrants in through the Splash page and should you force this? The answer is pretty well written that to force anything on viewers is a folly. They have choice and the choice they will make is "I'm outta here!"

I am against a splash page. If I visit other sites which have them, I leave immediately. It would be okay if we were given the choice to have one or not.

I guess it could be an option, but my personal reaction to splash pages is to skip through them, and if I can't, go somewhere else. Native support for Flash within pages would be great though.

I think Yola is fantastic, even as one who can build from scratch with code.

But I believe Yola needs to put some legacy issues to bed before trying to add too much. By this I mean:
1. Deprecated code - much of the underlying code would get a student a fail.
2. Redundant code - make direct changes, then look at the code. It has not deleted, just doubled even tripled the code.
3. CSS can have variable results, particularly if some changes have been made on the interface. Many times I've requested a font family, for instance, and it has worked, only to find it overridden by Yola HTML code.

The work you people is doing is brilliant, and please keep it up. To be able to build and publish completely for free or paid if so desired is wonderful, and I know you have your work cut out. I just feel a few problems need addressing before Yola moves on to other things.

I think it would depend on what your websites purpose is/what it is about. I don't think it would be any good for mine as I made it purely for me and my partner but thought others might find it useful too www.freefallforever.co.uk
If I put a splash page on mine I think people would find it annoying on such a small website

I'm another one who skips splash pages. I hate them. If I want to visit someone's web site, I want to visit someone's web site, not a splash page! I think language options and any other important stuff can be on the home page. If someone wants to show their best stuff, like a portfolio, have a clear link on the home page.

I think a splash page is a very bad idea for shopping, service industry or information sites. For game sites or anything entertainment where you might expect a grand entrance I think you are fine with a splash page.....The big factor to me if you have a splash page is that the page has to load and not hang up.....I have moved on many times from sites with a splash page for that reason.

I have a splash page on my YOLA site. This is bad news for YOLA because I have imbedded a Competitors page to do this. I would definitely change this to a YOLA splash page please give us the choice.

I am getting about 1600 page hits a month most of which will see a WIX advertised page before they enter my YOLA site.

You can see it here.

Not really a splash page...I do like your site though....Here is an example of a splash page that is dead on correct on how to use one...... http://www.twilightthemovie.com/#/Splash

My son's g/f is 19 and had this for her home page and so did most of her friends....Chances are a few million young women did the same

Hello Guys and Gals

I love hearing the various viewpoints regarding Splash Pages.

Feedback like this is always valuable to our Product Development team but please do not take this to mean that we will be considering adding splash pages as a feature release.

For those who really do wish to explore this avenue, you can always create your own splash page by having your index page as the splash page and adding a code to remove the menu just for the first page. If you'd like more information about this, please feel free to email me at support@yola.com.

The above site is a good example of why I would skip a site with a flash page. I got fed up of waiting for it to load. Whatever happens when a viewer is on dial up? Maybe they go shopping and come back again afterwards?
Seriously - I see no harm in them, but I think folks should have the opportunity to decide when setting up their site.

I think they look nice (for people with flash). But, they do create problems too. If you do make a splash page, you should add a "Skip" link. And, you should add something that will appear if they have no flash so they can still get to your site with a regular link.

Splash page can be fun if you have a kid's site. But anything that takes away your time, like too long to load, too long flash intro etc. is not worth the time. Time and simplicity is what people are looking for. That's the only patience they have in today's instant society. It must be quick, simple and appealing.

What you could do is use cookies. A first time user views it, but when they come back to it again, it's no longer going to show because they've already viewed it, or, you could put a don't show me this again checkbox on it.

You can also put a link: Skip this page ยป on the splash page saying to skip it. You can make a flash splash page right on Yola, you will just have to created the flash object your self and then upload it to Yola and then put it in the splash page... but you'll need a Flash program to create flash. Like this: http://adobe.com/flash

Sincerely,
Nathan

Can I just ask. Is this the type of things that pages suitable for mature adults have e.g. Please click the enter site button as this content is inappropriate e.t.c????

That is certainly one use case, but hosting adult content on a Yola site violates our terms of service regardless of if you have a splash page implemented on your website or not.

Hello,
Yes, you can absolutely create a splash page, however, if you are creating an adult site, it will be shut down for violating our terms of services.

You will most likely want to make a clickable banner that says enter. I would suggest visiting bannerfans to do this. Because we do not encourage Splash pages, we cannot take you step by step through the process, it will be more of a work in progress on your end until you reach something you are satisfied with.

I guess you as Yola Employee's can't help me with this but hopefully someone can. Would I make a spalsh page that re-directs to my site that isn't vieable in the site bar at the top?
