Thinking about buying domain name from Yola. If I need to sometime in the future, how do I transfer my domain name (purchased from and hosted by Yola) to another provider? How long does the process take?

Hi there Pjunderscore

There are two options when you want to move your domain away from Yola:

Option 1: You can edit your DNS settings so that your domain points to your new provider. Depending on the host you're moving to, it would either be editing nameservers or creating an A Record. This means that you will still get a renewal reminder from us 11 months after purchase. If you choose this option, please view this tutorial: DNS for your domain purchased from Yola .

Option 2: We can release your domain so that it is transferred to another domain registrar completely. You will receive a code from us that you can give to your new domain registrar. To unlock and transfer your domain, you can then follow these steps:

1. Login to your Yola account and make sure you are on the "My Sites" page
2. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and tick the box next to "Enable advanced domain settings"
3. You will be scrolled back up to the top, click on "Advanced domain settings".
4. If you would like to transfer your domain to another domain registrar, untick the button next to "Lock this domain name". An email will be sent to you and it will contain the transfer code you will need to give to your new domain registrar in order to complete the transfer.

I hope this helps.

Can we do this with a free site that we made here?

Like say, if there is another site that will offer hosting a domain name for $9.99/yr.?

Hello Mike

If you're asking if you can purchase a domain name elsewhere but point it at Yola so that you can still use your free account to build your website, then, yes, you can!

We have a tutorial outlining the steps to configuring your domain, giving two popular domain name registrars as examples: Using a Domain Name not purchased through Yola.

There are also instructions on how to use ZoneEdit if your domain name registrar does not provide you with domain name management. However, most domain name registrars can assist you with an A record, in which case you would not need to use a third party service like ZoneEdit.

These are general instructions on how to configure your domain to point to Yola. ***If you require specific help with the interface of your domain name registrar, please contact them for support.***

How to configure a domain name you already own:

1. Log in to your chosen domain registrar (eg.,
2. Go to the DNS Management page.
3. Set up an A Record.
4. The IP address of your record must point to: ""

If you would like your domain to work correctly with the "www" prefix you need to make sure that your DNS settings are configured correctly to support the "www" prefix. For this you need to set up two A-records:

* Some domain registrars require one A Record with the hostname "@" and one with the hostname "www".
* Other domain registrars allow you to create one hostname called "" and another "www" (replace "domain" with your own address).
* Both should point to our IP address:

Please note that it can take up to 48 hours (although usually less) for these changes to take effect and you need to contact your domain registrar if you need help in that regard. Feel free to forward any instructions you receive from them to us so that we can advise you further.

Once you have configured your DNS settings, follow these steps:

1. Click the yellow "Publish My Site" button in Yola.
2. Click on "Use my Domain" at the bottom of the screen.
3. Click on "I have done this" and fill in your domain name.
4. Follow the prompts to publish your site.

If your site is already published, click the drop down arrow next to the "Update my Site" button, and then select "Publishing Settings" and you will see an option to add a domain you already own.

Once your site is published to your domain the hard part is over and you will be able to edit your site and then update it with a single click.

For a step by step video on how to publish your site using a domain you already own, please see: Publish to an external domain. For a step by step video on how to publish your site to a professional and standard domain, please see: Publishing to professional and standard domain.

Hi, Brad,

If it is within one month of expiration, we can recover it for you and then you can transfer it after 60 days elsewhere. You can point it to your new site elsewhere while you wait for the 60 days. Otherwise, if it is more than a month, it will go through a process where no one can purchase it. This can take a few weeks to a few months. It will then become available for purchase again. Please send an email to with the domain name and we can take a look at it.
