Tried removing index page based on online instructions...Frozen!

I published my site tonight and realized that the index page is my home page. I tried removing the index page, which needs to be replaced by my blog page. I followed the online instructions which were:

- Go to Sitebuilder and rename the page that you want to have as your index page "index".
- When asked if you want to overwrite the existing page titled "index" chose yes.

I did this and got a Fatal Error Message which popped up and dissapeared real fast. Then on the page that I was trying to get rid of, a message popped up saying "Unfortunately there is a problem opening your page. We apologize for the inconvenience. If this problem persists contact customer support". At the bottom it gives me the option to logout or contact support. I can't click either of these because the page is greyed out. When I check the dropdown menu that lists the pages, my blog page is still called blog. I am afraid to republish now...God knows what will happen but the index page has to go away. Right now my readers are seeing a random page that I never even added anything to! Please help.

Ok, so when I click on 'preview' on the index page (the page I was trying to get rid of) I see the Fatal Error Message. The page is still frozen. I've tried logging out and back in, nothing. I am on a timeline and tonight is the only longer stretch of time I have left to get the site perfected before the launch. There are pages that are still completely empty but I'm afraid to do my edits, add content and hit 'publish' because of this problem. Can I hit publish without everything going crazy? Here's the message:

Hi,

I have no idea what's causing this specifically. I think it's dead in the water. When nasty things happen to your index page it most often is irrecoverable and your only option can be to rebuild from scratch. You can wait for Yola support to inspect your site, they have back-door entry and may be able to help but I'm certainly not saying they will be able to help.

I wouldn't place a blog as my index page simply because you can never change it to a non blog home page. You can place it on another page and with the use of a specific widget, display it on your home page. This is a much safer way to go.

I really wish I could have helped you here and now with this one.

Gop, thanks you for the response. I really hope that I don't have to start over again. Maybe you can help me on this one...How do you get a Yola person to respond? I purchased the Silver package because among other things it promised 24/7 customer support but there's nothing 24/7 about it :(

Hi stretchthaties,

You can make contact with Yola here on this Forum, by sending an email to support@yola.com or by calling them. Your Silver subscription enables you to use any or all these methods.

Their objective is to respond to emails and forum posts within 24 hours for Silver if they possibly can. At the moment they are falling well short of this objective and from what has been mentioned they have had a large increase in support requests since returning from the Christmas new year vacation.

Their planning presumably didn't have any scalability to cope with the load increase and it has now been a month and it seems to be getting slower and slower. I hope they can pull this up by the boot-strings and get back on track for their customers sake and for their credibility sake. Prior to this new-year they met their objectives with excellence so I would think that they would wish to get back on top of this. Unfortunately they are showing signs of distress with their ability to manage their growth and there are cracks in the seams. I do really hope that the organisation doesn't implode.

The 24/7 means they offer access all day but as you can see not 24/7 response. It's a common call as you would know.

You can make a call to their support service and they will call back if you leave a message and they are out of office. This support is free for Silver Subscribers but the call cost may not be, depends on your location. Call-backs are free.

Their in-office hours are published somewhere I can't find them. Sorry. You would probably have a list of these with your membership advice?

Thanks again Gop.

Well, it's been 14 hours since I sent a message to support, tried calling and posted here 13 hours ago. Judging by the fact that the other issue I had (which has resolved itself) that I posted about 20 hours ago still hasn't even been acknowledged by anyone at Yola, I am not too hopeful that I will get a response on this, much more pressing problem any time soon :(

Please, someone at Yola, just take a moment to respond. This is not a question about how to make my site prettier or add a widget, I just want my site to function. I have a website that I launched that makes absolutely no sense to anyone looking at it and I can't edit it at all. Even more frustrating. I just noticed that someone posted here about coming back to Yola and within 1 hour received a response from a Yola Employee, yet here I am with an issue and no one at Yola replies?!

Hi stretchthaties,

I am sorry to hear about the issue you're having with your index page. I searched our database and see that Diane got back to you via your original email inquiry at 8:30 this morning. In her response, she provided steps to recover your index page. Have you been able to give them a try yet?

But i don't know how to create my blog without index page.

why don't you lets us add blog tools in default index page. coz at the moment we can see blog tools only after adding a new blog page in addition to default index page.

Hi Sandeep,

You are most definitely best not to add a blog to your index page. The problem is that Blog pages have a limited functionality compared to ordinary pages and you can't switch a blog page to a non-blog page as your index page. if you wish to display your blog on your index page then you are better to bring it in a third party widget onto your page and it's up to you whether or not you include the original blog page in your menu.

You mention that you deleted your index page. Was this after you created a new index page or before? I presume a default index is simply a blank page

If you no longer have an index page in your sitebuilder then I think you have crashed your site., Particularly that you are also receiving a notice like you mention. You will probably have to rebuild from scratch. I hope there is another explanation for this as it's disheartening to lose a site which many of us have survived but remember the despair acutely.

Your older version maybe still published so please don't publish again because if it does publish you will lose the resource of your old site to copy from. I can help you with a reconstruction if your old site is still online if you wish.
