Updating pages of your site!?

Does EVERY page have to be updated on a regular basis for that page to remain in good standings with google?

I've often been told that pages / sites have to be updated on a regular basis for better rankings in google, but I have many pages (too many to regularly update each one)!

I'm trying to figure out why my site is un-indexing from google. About a month ago I had over 240 pages indexed and since then my site is slowly coming out of google's index. I now have 133 pages indexed - which isn't much! :(

If it helps any, I can indicate that my main site hasn't been modified as much as it probably should be because I am working on my subdomain. Should I be sure to update my main site on a regular basis even if it's just a small amount?

NOTE: I did look at webmasters 3 days ago and it indicated no problems. I'm about to look at it again!

ok, just checked again and on January 6, 2010 errors were detected...

"We encountered an error while trying to access your Sitemap. Please ensure your Sitemap follows our guidelines and can be accessed at the location you provided and then resubmit."

although this could be the problem now, it wasn't the problem on January 5 when I checked webmasters.

Maybe someone can tell me why I'm getting this error message and maybe someone can tell me why my site was coming out of google's index prior to this problem!

When it comes to anything that computers has to say about you web site (threw ranking or indexing) like google, yahoo, msn or the like of them I try not to get over concern when it comes to my sites.

Heres an example

http://www.a-and-l-merchants.com/ googles page rank 3/10 alexa ranking of 1,120,078
http://www.aandlmerchants.com/ googles page rank 2/10 alexa ranking of 964,471

the a-and-l- site and aandl site are the same except for one small trademark placement.

The a-and-l site has only one page with link to aandl for all other pages.

I check google analysis and Webmaster tools and laugh because it's only a measure of computer programing and not of human. I try to do my best to give the humans the best and most comfortable feeling while at the site. The computer has never bought anything or said "nice site".

Don't get to upset at a computer good grade today and not so great the next. You got a good site that I like lookig at from time to time and I grade it HIGH. Keep up the good work.

Hi Donald,

I have gone from 450 pages to 200 - ive dropped 250 pages in 2 months.

From what i i understand, if google believe the content is old news and the page is not 'hit' they will drop it.

Also FYI, every time you update all the pages are re published.

I would concentrate on getting links to every page you want linked and getting people hitting them. - if you don't already use twitter i would highly recommend it - every link to a page on twitter is a valid back link (unlike facebook).

Hope this helps mate - Lee.

about the FYI... this is debatable... YES pages are re-published everytime the site is updated HOWEVER, if you view your sitemap, the last modification <!-- <lastmod> --> date is based on last time THAT page was modified/updated. When google considers if a page has new/fresh content... I believe it would use this date to consider if something is old. I have pages on my site with a last modification of like July 2009 (which is kinda old news in googlebots opinion).

ok... so basically, the more "traffic" a "page" gets the better odds of good indexing?

Right now I'm lucky to get 10 visitors a day because I'm not actively promoting the site, I'm working on something and about February or so I intend on getting more traffic, I have a $25 AdWords credit which will get me started plus I'll be contacting A LOT of sites to request link exchanges. So I do intend on traffic increasing in the near future.
