I'd like to ad that I currently have a FREE website with you guys, and have purchased a domain name elsewhere but cannot seem to combine the two.
I did this once before for another business but cannot remember how i did it for the life of me... I did not have to pay any extra fees or anything.
What on earth must I do so that when I type my website (domain) in a browser, my site appears???

Hello Marcela,

We have relatively recently made publishing an external domain available to Yola Silver account holders only. You do this by creating A records (address record) to point to this IP address: "184.72.229.176". You will need to do this configuration yourself and the method for doing so varies from registrar to registrar. You will need to log in to your account with your domain registrar and create 2 A Records (Address Record) to point to this IP address: 184.72.229.176.  One A Record for WWW and another one for @.

We have a tutorial outlining the steps to configuring your domain: Publish to a domain you already own. You can also transfer your domain to Yola so that your domain is managed through us: Tutorial: Transferring your domain to Yola.

For detailed instructions for a few specific domain registrars please click on this link: Domain Configuration with GoDaddy, Register.com & other domain registrars.

If you need any assistance with this, please let us know.

SO hang on, what you're saying is that I now have to pay an ongoing fee to have my website and my domain together with Yola??

Is that right??

Is there another way where I am not charged?
Surely there is a way - my site is still published with you for free, only difference now is that I have a domain and need to set that up..?

If this is the case, I am very disappointed with this recent changes and after having been a loyal Yola fan and recommending you to all my friends, I will be looking elsewhere for options.

I look forward to your reply.

Many thanks
Marcela

Hello Marcela,

Thank you for your feedback regarding the change to pointing a domain to Yola from another registrar.

We would just like to re-emphasize the following:

1. Any domain that is currently pointed to our servers can remain pointed for free indefinitely.
2. Anyone who upgrades to Yola Silver can point as many domains to us as they wish.

This is something we have to do in order to remain a viable business due to greatly increased costs to us to provide the level of security and stability necessary for a service of our size.

Free pointing was fine up to a point, but as we have grown in popularity, we have to deal with both the increased load, and the fact that we have become more of a target for hackers. While we continue to provide our hosting for free for all customers, the fairest way we could offset these costs was to include the option to point in the Yola Silver package, or offer customers the option to purchase their domain from us or transfer it. Since we are not removing any currently pointed domains we hope that the impact on our existing customers will be limited.

If you have been a customer for a long time and had a lot of value from our service, we sincerely hope that you will consider upgrading your account to take full advantage of everything Yola has to offer for your site and your business.

For more information on the various options available to you please see these resources:

Thank you for your prompt reply.

I guess my only option (so that I don’t pay anymore) is to wait 60 days and then transfer my domain – I believe this is free?

Otherwise, I have to pay $100 a year and to be honest... I’m not even sure i’d be making that kind of money with my hobby!

So although I appreciate what you’re saying, and do understand, it no longer suits me.

I thank you for your time.

Kind regards,
Marcela

Ok I just got a reply from the company I purchased my domain with....
Can someone answer this for me please (there may be hope yet)...

Hello Marcela,

Thank you for your email.

You need to provide us the name servers from your web hosting provider.
Once we get that, we can change the name servers for you.

If you have any further queries, please feel free to let us know.

Thank you,
Aaron

Hi Marcela

Thank you for sharing your domain here. I see that you have just recently purchased your domain. You will need to wait 60 days before you will be able to transfer your domain to Yola.

Please note that the transfer can take up to 12 days to complete once it is initiated. This means it can be a few days or maybe weeks before you will be able to use your domain to publish your site.

Hi Marcela,

Yes, you will have to wait the 60 days until you can transfer your domain.
In the meantime you can point your domain to Yola with A records.

We have a tutorial on it here: http://www.yola.com/tutorials/article...

Misleading reply yet AGAIN...
I am a FREE Yola customer, I don't have Silver - so I cannot point my domain with A records.

I have contacted your customer support directly in hope I can deal with one person directly instead of going around in cirlces.

Thank you for your time.

Hi Marcela

We definitely don't want to send you around in circles so I would like to respond as clearly as I can. I have read through this thread and I don't think the replies are misleading, certainly not deliberately so. Our reps have explained that in order to point a domain to Yola you need to upgrade your account to Yola Silver. It is in this context that Jeremy told you how you could point your domain to Yola.

The reason for this policy is that while we allow people to host sites for free on subdomains, we cannot have a viable business if we allow people to buy their domains elsewhere and point them to us while taking advantage of our free hosting, sitebuilding and support. The purpose of the free version is to allow users to experience what we have to offer so that they can upgrade their accounts when they are ready, not to use our free hosting indefinitely with domains purchased from another provider.

We believe that we offer the best value in the industry for a total website building solution. By all means, use the free version to try us out for as long as you like, but if you want to use a professional domain you will need to either purchase the domain from us, transfer it to us or upgrade your account. The free version is for trial purposes and therefore limited, and there is a cost associated with our premium features. One of the most important premium features is the ability to publish to a custom domain.

Our target customers are people looking to build business websites. We try to make it easy and keep our prices competitive but our assumption is that the type of customers we want to attract will be prepared to invest some money in creating a professional site once they have developed to that level. We certainly understand your freedom of choice in this regard, and if you have a hobby site that you do not want to pay for then using a free yolasite subdomain or moving to a different service may be the best solution for you.
