webmaster tools says I have no links

I've had a website since November with a links page. I've linked quite a few sites using link exchange websites to myself. I've opened several network sites (facebook, MSM etc) with links to my site, free indexing sites too. So I have maybe 20 seperate websites out there with links to www.a-class-driving.synthasite.com. And on my links page I have those links listed. However, when I look on google webmaster tools at how many links are pointing to me, it says none. How come? Am I misunderstanding what this tool is for? Or do I have a problem?

Hello,
I did a bit of searching around and it seems that others have had this type of problem as well. I found a thread in Google Webmaster help where someone else had this problem and some others gave some information. Google Webmaster Help.

You can also use Yahoo Site Explorer to get an idea of the links back to your site. To do this go to Yahoo and in the searchbox put this command

linkdomain:a-class-driving.synthasite.com

This will show you the links back to your site.

Hope this helps,
Emmy

Thanks Emmy. Yahoo says I have 34, which sounds about right. How come google says I have none? Are they just not important enough to register under google? What is the point in having a links tool if it doesnt register any of them? Grrr. Might the problem be that I have a webcrawl error 404 not found?

I've been trying to build my links up to improve my ranking and seems as though Im going nowhere.

Looking even closer Im told I have no links of any kind, internal, external and sitelinks. I can understand google saying that the external links arent important as far as they are concerned, but internal links ... pointing at my own pages, surely this isnt up to them to decide if its important, it's a matter of fact. No?

Hello Will,
Well, it seems you are not alone! I have done some more searching on this topic and find that this has happened to others as well possibly for reasons such as the size of a site, it's age or other reasons... but as I don't work for Google or have insider information I cannot be sure.

What I can tell you is to do a search in Google for a phrase such as "why don't backlinks show up in Google Webmaster" or "why don't internal links show up in Google Webmaster" and you will find others who have experienced the same thing. You may want to add to some of these dialogues and possibly pose this question to Google as well.

I hope this helps a bit.

I have read here and there that Google chooses to not show all links for a given site although they still see them and count them. For my site Google shows 191 inbound links to my site and Yahoo shows over 800.I think since Yahoo can see them I assume that Google can also.

Hey Will,

I think the reason why u didnt get any report link on your webmaster tools its because you are using "www.a-class-driving.synthasite.com", try to adjust it to "a-class-driving.synthasite.com"

Webmaster Tools show different report on the site within www and without www.

Let me know if works,

Hope it helps,
Thanks,

So strange that if it can see them, it doesnt list them. Does that strike anyone else as odd?

Hi Will,

I see that your pages are held as Supplemental by Google. Google pretty well locks you site down wrt their indexing etc until those pages come out of supplemental..

I don't pretend to know much about Google SEO but know that Supplemental classification is the first thing you have to clear before you can really analyse anything else.

The web site was indexed by Google long ago, but it has classified your pages as supplemental. Incorrect links don't force your pages into supplemental, but supplemental shuts down the whole process and it wouldn't even begin to check links until clear.

Thanks Peter. Ive had a URL error in webmaster tools for a while now, I was told by a lot of people to ignore it and it doesnt matter. Im now guessing that it is that error that has pushed me into suplemental.

I've read that google will still crawl your site in supplemental, however, knowing what is wrong and how to get out is the problem. Copied content, repeated content, link issues, strange image text ... many things.

Here is a picture of my webmaster tools, as you can see, no links! Which is incorrect as I have many.

I can see what you're saying. You have the links yahoo sees them. Google is ignoring them because of the supplemental thing so it's not even trying to rank your site. Therefore external links are simply ignored. The real issue is getting your site out of supplemental so it can again acknowledge your links and run the page ranking.

Exactly! What I need (I think) is to find a way to hunt down this rouge bad link/URL not found issue that is in my webmaster tools. Have asked for help here before, no one knew what it was, or where it went. In the end I was told to ignore it, it wouldnt make a difference. I suspect it's the issue. Have put in a question in the google webmaster forum. Fingers crossed someone can

Hi Will - I don't see any links in your site or on your sitemap resembling the one Google's showing an error for. It's possible there was just a hiccup in Google's system - my suggestion would be to wait until your site is crawled again and see if the error goes away. Google's Webmaster Tools site is a good resource, but does have issues from time to time. This is especially true for smaller sites WMT is not updated as frequently for them.

The good news is that I do see your site in Google's index - if you do a search for "a-class-driving.synthasite.com" it shows up. It's going to take a combination of time and links from relevant websites to show up for other terms.

Best of luck - hang in there!

What do you think to this solution. Paying for www.a-class-driving.com domain from synthasite and having the old website URL re-direct to the new one. Then the old webcrawl error wouldnt be directed to my new site and I would get back in the google index. Does that make sense? And would it work?

I've been told by someone on the google forum that supplemental indexing does not exist! Well, there you go.

Have been put on to a nice tool
Xenu Link Sleuthe

Free to download, crawls your site and tells you about broken links. Oddly I have none, even though google webmaster tools says I have one ... So google can see problems that arent there and doesnt display links that are there ... beginning to dislike google quite a bit.

Google has recrawled my site several times since finding the error, Im still in supplemental index (don't care what others say, there is one and I'm in it!).

Finding the whole thing exceptially annoying and damaging to my business. It's a new business and the internet is my main way people are going to find me, but stuck in the supplemental, not much chance of that.

Rather than going away, another one has appeared. Once again with the random % signs in amungst the URL. Have no idea what this is. Supposedly on my main page too, which has no links of any kind. Have check my site with Xanu and it tells me my links and site are clean.

Will just have to suck it up.

Hi Will,

I hope this gets sorted out quickly for you. Very frustrating.

You say that you have no links on your home page. I think there's one behind or embedded in your banner which directs to your home page again and this seems to be on each page. I'm intrigued. How did you get code into your banner and I wonder if this has anything to do with your problem?

Good luck Will.

Nope, no links. I see what you mean about my banner, have no idea why that happens. The design of this site shouldnt have any banner options. I have another site where I can play with the banner and put stuff in, chage the picture etc, but on this one there shouldn't be. On the main page I've looked around and can't see any way to change or alter the banner.

I've been constanly checking my webmaster tools, and today another error has popped up with very similar looking details

http://a-class-driving.synthasite.com...

Google however says it detected it on the 28th of Feb, but only appeared there today in my errors list... I really don't know what to do.

Peter, how can I go about finding more about your idea with the banner?

Hello,
The links that appear in the image above, when you click on them it takes you to an error 404 page. I would like to see the full path of the url. Can you click on one of the links and then copy and paste the url from the browser window in here so I can check it out.

Will,
I found the style that you are using and created a page myself. I got the same effect of a link in the banner area.

I then went and checked one of my sites which aren't the same style and I got the same thing. So it's a red herring. Sorry to get your hopes up.
