Hi Marian

I am very sorry that you are having this issue!

We have received reports that the Chinese government has blocked all our hosted sites. The error you will see is a "network timeout" or a Google error message when you try to access your site. We are not sure why our sites have been blocked, but we know that other similar services, that allow for user generated content, have been blocked or filtered in the same way in the past.

You will be able to access the site builder and preview your site. The preview is an exact replica of what your published site will look like. Unfortunately you or anyone else in China will not be able to see your published site, however.

After making inquiries we are told that we might never get an explanation or a solution. Unfortunately this is all we can tell you, I'm sorry I can't be of more help in this regard.

maybe if he gave out the url you get when you preview the page - that might work? or is that a stupid idea? - maybe only the synthasite domain is blocked.

Hey Marian - try this see what happens
do both these links work for you.
http://hexham.info
http://hexhaminfo.synthasite.com

If the first works but not the second you could fix your problem by getting your own domain through synthasite, its very inexpensive.

Let me know what happens

Nice suggestions Lee - thanks for trying to think of solutions. Here is what we know:

1) The site builder and previews are not blocked.
2) Any site hosted on our servers, be they a subdomain or a custom domain are blocked.

From this we assume that our hosted sites are blocked on IP address (not domain names) because the site builder and our hosted sites use different IP addresses.

If preview URL's are distributed, these could also end up getting blocked.

ok i see, i knew there would be a reason for not giving out preview url's, that would mean you could'nt even preview it if blocked? The chinese goverment need to chill out, did'nt they censor google a couple of years back?

yes they did. Google had to comply with a license with the PRC for their operations there now. In effect there's a Google china now. It's quite an experience to use Google in China.

Many popular sites are not available in China .

I can get around the Great Firewall but since we want the website to be easily viewable to other people here in China we're going to have to find some other host.

Thanks.

Synthasite gives the option to download your code as a zip file. I've done this. Now I just to need to find a host and upload the code there.
