Does the index page have to be refered to as "index" for a link to it to work, or can we rename it?

Yes, it has to be called "index" or the browser will not be able to open your site. You will get a 404 error. This is why Yola does not permit you to rename your index page. However, you can edit the menu text and call it whatever you like, using the "Edit Menu" function. It does not matter what the link text is for your page, as long as the file name of the page is "index."
