I chose Gill Sans as the font for my text. When I chose a different font, there is a red "x" displayed beside it. What does this mean ?

An "x" in a red box that precedes an item (like a font style) in the text widget drop down menus represents the current formatting settings that you've set for your text.

Text that uses the default settings or that have been cleared by the "Remove Formatting" generally will not display these which is why you may not have noticed them before.
