Hmmm.. interesting question Peter.

For myself, I could go either way. I know for someone like my mom, she would probably prefer if she could stay in the same window or site as she would be wary of clicking the open window off by accident or something like that.

Thanks littleus. It's an untouched aspect isn't it? The conservative fearful attitude of a group of users. It's real and I don't think I have ever seen it addressed. I must look at this. Very interesting.

when it comes to an external link it would be best if the customers don't leave your site therefore needing a new window to open. For an internal link, same window is fine... but this clicks a question... can we decide whether or not a link opens a new window? bc for my external links I would prefer this option so customers don't get redirected AWAY from my site.

Hi Donald. Thanks for your feelings on this. It's quite easy to code for a new page to open.

This is a big deal and one of the few areas that really needs to be addressed....Regardless of how we feel link building is part of the process for us.Link options are available every place I post my site other than my site builder on my own site...I am not unsure at all

I find this article helpful: http://www.sitepoint.com/article/bewa...

However, we can certainly talk to our developers about adding more options to the link editor, as options are always a good thing.

@John,

Most reviews I've read don't agree either but I have no idea of knowing what the bias is.

This is giving me an idea of the opinions of this group of builders

@Peter....I do think that the time the article was written needs to be considered.Tabbed browsing sort of changed this.I recall when I would have pages all over the place and hated it....And Dude ! Do you ever sleep ?

For anyone who is interested in web usability, Jacob Nielsen is one of the people you should be aware of: http://www.useit.com/ You don't have to agree with him but his arguments are worth considering. Another author worth looking at is Steven Krug: http://www.sensible.com/

Links are the least of my worries I don't have a site at the moment...Register.com is dead in the water along with anyone registered with them.

the problem with target=_blank is that stupid IE opens it in a new window, a new tab is fine - I use the blank option for all my links which are off my site because 9 times out of 10 un-experienced users don't know how to get back to your site.

I have already requested more advanced link options, lets hope they listen.

I think in these situations you have to listen to your heart, whatever you think is right is right, no ones right no ones wrong.

Lee.

I thought they went to tabbed also....I only use IE long enough to make sure my site looks OK on it.

Interesting Lee,

Monique has just given us some great references. I've only spent a couple of minutes on one of them and have read some stuff by Nielsen.
His analysis is that there is a right a way and that's the way the customer thinks and is probably unrelated to what the designer thinks. Most users don't browse. very few start at the home page and most get in and get out without being distracted by ads or gizmos.

I'm devastated :(
