When did hosting external domains cease to be free?

When did Yola change the free hosting for external domains to be available only to silver members? A friend started building a site on my recommendation back in December, and when he tried to publish, the rules had changed. It seems that already existing members were grandfathered in, but he was not. Doesn't seem fair...

Hi karensavage,

Thanks for your email. You are welcome to read more about this change on our blog here: http://www.yola.com/blog/changes-to-free-domain-pointing-feature/.

People who already had their sites published to external domains were able to keep their sites published to those externally purchased domains for free provided they do not unpublish their sites.

Any new externally purchased domains can be transferred to Yola for domain management or pointed to Yola for with a Silver upgrade which includes unlimited domain pointing along with many other fantastic features.

Your friend is welcome to email us at support@yola.com to discuss this further if desired.

This is lame. The whole reason I chose Yola in the first place is that it was cheaper than the rest. As a small business, I need to keep my costs as low as possible in order to grow.

The extra money is not worth it. I do not need all the extra features that Silver offers. All I want is an easy to create website, plus my own domain name. Since Yola doesn't offer domain names for South Africa (ironic, since Yola was created by a South African) - I have to buy elsewhere.

I will be leaving Yola as soon as I have found an alternative. A shame, really. More money-chasing.

Hello lynnebarry,
You raise a very valid point in terms of us not being able to offer certain domain names, such as .co.za, so pointing is necessary. However, it is also important to note that in general we as a company need to make decisions that will help us grow and support the business and in turn our customers. If you would like to email me at support@yola.com I would like to try to come up with some sort of a solution with you.

Kind Regards,
