Sophia - You can publish your site free as a .yolasite.com subdomain, the reason you cannot get a free www.example.com domain is because it costs to host it. That is THE only bit of the web that is not free and EVERYONE has to pay it. Even Bill Gates!

Hope this helps!

Here is the break down on how it works ;)

Customer-->Site Host(and domain registrar or both)-->Corporate Pay-->Maintenance, Bandwidth, Servers-->Employee Pay-->Anything else is profit

So... if we owned our own host... would we be able to get a free domain? I'm still confused! Why do we have to pay if the domain registrar doesn't?

Hi Sophia,
You can definitely build and launch a website with Yola for free. There are a large number of free styles to choose from and you can also publish to a free subdomain if you would like. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Mui ,
Yeah, why they can't offer them for free ?
ICANN (int. Corp. For assigned names and numbers-icann.org) is the central for .com,net,org,info and biz domains. Godaddy is an ICANN accredited registrar.(can you become a registrar ? Yeah , if you can pay $2500/yr and wire your servers to WWW)

when you buy any domain , said above,registrar looks ICANN Registry and place your site at 'em.
Then , they host your domain at their servers and let you change Nameservers , or add custom Zones.

Every country has a ccTLD Domain (suffix -like .us , .tk , .Lk) which controlled under NIC.
NIC has rights to let users to take their domain either at a price , or not.

NIC for .tk has been owned by a Netherland Company and they lets users to get .tk domains for FREE.!
Co.uk is a ccTLD too.
