Why is my background image taking so long to load?

Take a look at this - The background image - when not cached locally - takes a long time to load for the first time you view it. No matter what image I try, it still takes a long time to load properly. Personally, I am using Chrome Beta 11.0 however I have tested my website on multiple browsers on multiple laptops. My internet connection isn't to blame either.

Please note that I have tried 'web optimization' using Adobe CS5, which is displayed at the home page of my website. The original image with out web optimization can be found on any other page.

Web optimized background image size: 393 KB.

Can someone tell me what is going on or what I can do to improve this?

Hello Michael,

393KB is still a pretty hefty image size. It is best to keep your image file size to 100KB. Please try compressing your image further and this should improve your loading time. You may want to check out this tutorial: Optimizing the pictures you add to your site.

I hope you find the information helpful!
